The freeze desalination cycle with seawater heat pump system is simulated and designed for the basic data for the design of freeze desalination system. The basic model of seawater heat pump system is refrigeration cycle and indirect freeze desalination method is used for seawater desalination. The cycle performance of seawater heat pump such as COP, compressor work, condensing capacity was analyzed and the desalination performance such as fresh water productivity and energy per unit fresh water productivity was compared with respect to the seawater temperature of condenser inlet and ice ratio in the evaporator. The compressor work and condensing capacity decreased with respect to the decrease of seawater inlet temperature. The energy per unit fresh water productivity in case of $8^{\circ}C$ seawater inlet temperature showed 28.9% lower than that of $20^{\circ}C$.
The electricity cost of a desalination facility was also predicted and reviewed, which allowed the proposed model to be incorporated into the future design of such facilities. Input data from 2003 to 2014 of the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency (KHOA) were used, and the structure of the model was determined using the trial and error method to analyze as well as hyperparameters such as salinity and seawater temperature. The future seawater quality was estimated by optimizing the prediction model based on machine learning. Results indicated that the seawater temperature would be similar to the existing pattern, and salinity showed a gradual decrease in the maximum value from the past measurement data. Therefore, it was reviewed that the electricity cost for seawater desalination decreased by approximately 0.80% and a process configuration was determined to be necessary. This study aimed at establishing a machine-learning-based prediction model to predict future water quality changes, reviewed the impact on the scale of seawater desalination facilities, and suggested alternatives.
The seawater involving diverse chemical elements was mixed with wasted coals to improve the quality. The thermal and chemical characteristics of these seawater-mixed coals were investigated and compared with those of original coals. The contents of MgO, $Na_2O$, and $K_2O$ were increased by mixing seawater in wasted coals. The content of $Na_2O$ in these coal samples was greatly increased due to the sodium, which was the main component of seawater. Thus, it was expected that fusion temperatures of these coal samples were decreased. Coal samples mixed with seawater showed that the rapid weight loss was started at the lower temperature than those of original coal samples. In these coal samples, the temperatures of maximum heat emission were lowered by average $61^{\circ}C.$. Thus, it is suggested that some chemical constituents of the seawater act an important role on lowering the ignition temperature of wasted coal. By mixing seawater into wasted coals, the calorific values were increased. Especially, calorific values were greatly increased in the coal samples of lower quality as Baksan A and B with the improvement of 15~20%.
Use of heat from seawater could be different from the weather conditions of a coastal city and seawater temperatures near the city. It will be a good option to use surface layer water with Heat Pump system for using seawater cooling/heating in Jeju. The study investigates the proper depth for seawater heat gain of Jeju area in Korea. Sampling points are 0, 10, 20, 30m from the surface of the Sea. Seawater temperature does not change significantly according to the depth in winter, while the temperature is quite different according to the depth in summer. In this study, it is analyzed to compare existing system and seawater heat source system for target buildings on Jeju. And this systems are calculated a initial cost.

Saltwater intrusion effects of coastal aquifers in Korea peninsula were analyzed through trend analysis with groundwater level, seawater level, seawater temperature, and electrical resistivity(EC) data sets. Groundwater level and EC data sets from 27 coastal regions were collected and analyzed. Groundwater level was stable for all the regions however EC data showed stable or changing trends (9 increasing, 10 stable, and 8 decreasing regions). Seawater temperature was collected and analyzed for 14 regions and they are increasing for most regions (12 increasing and 2 stable regions). Seawater level was also collected and analyzed for 24 regions and is rising for most regions (18 rising, 3 stable, and 3 falling regions). Especially, west cost regions have stronger increasing tendencies of seawater level, seawater temperature, and EC than eastern and southern coastal regions. Therefore the saltwater intrusion problem can be serious for west cost regions in Korea peninsula and it is necessary to establish a plan to minimize the damages from saltwater intrusion.
On the basis of factor analysis, stations were grouped according to their similar characteristics of seawater quality. The data for factor analysis were collected from the 15 stations from Dukryang Bay to Ulsan Bay on the southern cost of Korea. The study was based on the data from 1991 to 2000. The 8 water quality items analyzed were temperature, salinity, pH, DO, COD, DIN (dissolved inorganic nitrogen), DIP (dissolved inorganic phosphorus), and SS (suspended solid). Analysis of 6 water quality items including DO with the exception of temperature and salinity showed that 15 stations were grouped into two zones, i.e., the western and the eastern coast, by the axis of Samcheonpo-Jinju Bay-south of Geoje, 3 seawater zones in all. The adjacent stations to the southward or northward but not those to the eastward or westward were classified into the same group. On the analysis of all of the 8 water quality items, the stations of Dukryang Bay and Goheung; and those of Onsan and Ulsan Bay were classified into the same group. Yeosu and Namhae stations were sectioned into 1 group on the all seawater quality items but DIP, Samcheonpo and south of Geoje stations another group on all seawater quality items but water temperature, and Masan and Busan stations in the other group on all seawater quality items but DO. The stations from Dukryang Bay through Goheung to east of Geoje were grouped together on the COD item, and this showed somewhat different tendency in other seawater quality items.
We applied SP monitoring and resistivity surveys using the pole-pole electrode array to seawater leakage problems in the Youngsan estuary dam and the Eoeun embankment to estimate and detect the zone of seawater leakage. The embankment is generally affected by tidal variation and has low resistivity characteristics due to the high saturation of seawater. For this reason, SP monitoring and the pole-pole array resistivity surveys, which are relatively more effective to the conductive media, were carried out to delineate the leakage zones of sea water through the embankment. We checked out electrical conductivity (EC) and temperature variations along the inner part of Youngsan estuary dam to detect the zone of seawater leakage and found that the measured EC value agreed to that of seawater in the leakage zone and the temperature was lower than that of the vicinity of leakage zone. SP monitoring results were coincided with tidal variations at each embankment. At the leakage zones in the Youngsan estuary dam and the Eoeun embankment, SP anomalies are in the range of -60~-85 mV and -20~-50 mV, respectively, and true resistivity values obtained by 2-D inversion are 3~15 ohm-m and below 0.3 ohm-m, respectively. Both SP monitoring and the pole-pole array resistivity method are found to be quite effective for investigation of seawater leakage zones in the embankment.
In this study, in order to utilize the seawater as a heat source at Gangneung city near the East Sea in Korea, an annual heating performance of a screw heat pump was simulated. For a simulation, the maximum heating capacity of heat pump was assumed at 3.5 MW. An ambient temperature at Gangneung city was calculated from the TMY2 weather data, while the seawater temperature was calculated from the regression equation based on the measurement by the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute of Korea. The heating load was assumed linearly dependent on the ambient temperature, while the maximum heating load was assumed to appear when the ambient temperature is below $-2.4^{\circ}C$, which is the temperature of TAC 2.5% for heating at Gangneung city. A heat pump performance at full-load was calculated from the regression equation, which involves refrigerant's evaporating and condensing temperatures, based on a commercial screw compressor performance map. A heating supply temperature which determines refrigerant's condensing temperature was assumed linearly dependent on the heating load. A performance degradation due to the part-load operation of heat pump was also considered. Simulation results show that an annual heating coefficient of performance ($COP_H$) of a seawater-source screw heat pump is approximately 2.8 and that it is necessary to improve part-load performance to increase an annual performance of the heat pump.

Corrosion is of greatest concern for metallic materials exposed to corrosive seawater or aggressive marine atmospheres. Marine structures and components made of metallic materials incur an initial cost and additional large costs for corrosion control and maintenance. There have been worldwide efforts to minimize marine corrosion and extend service life of the materials. It is believed that various factors are associated with corrosion of marine grade metallic materials, particularly the temperature of the solution affecting the corrosion rate by changing dissolved oxygen solubility and concentrations of chloride. In the present study, the electrochemical characteristics of S355ML steel are investigated to identify corrosion acceleration tendencies with changes in solution temperature under marine environments. It was found that increasing seawater temperature, promoted not only activation of chloride ion transfer, but also the formation of porous $Fe(OH)_3$ or $Fe_2O_3$, leading to the acceleration of corrosion.
