항공사 패키지 여행 단체수요의 좌석할당 문제 (A Seat Allocation Problem for Package Tour Groups in Airlines)

  • This study is focused on the problem of seat allocation for group travel demand in airlines. We first explain the characteristic of group demand and its seat allocation process. The group demand in air travel markets can be classified into two types : incentive and package groups. Allocating seats for group demand depends on the types of group demand and the relationship between airlines and travel agents. In this paper we concentrate on the package group demand and develop an optimization model for seat allocation on the demand to maximize the total revenue. With some assumptions on the demand distribution and the linear approximation technique, we develop a mixed IP model for solving our problem optimally. From the computational experiments, we can find our optimization model can be applied well for real-world application.

  • We consider a two-fare, two-period airline seat capacity allocation problem where consumers may choose different options in purchasing an airline ticket. A consumer may decide to wait for reopening of the same fare class ticket which is originally intended to buy, or may buy a different fare class ticket within the same period, if the originally requested fare is unavailable. We investigate the impact of the consumer buying behavior on the optimal solutions and the expected revenue.

  • Over the last three decades, there are many researches focusing on the practice and theory of RM in airlines. Most of them have dealt with a seat assignment problem for maximizing the total revenue. In this study, we focus on a seat assignment problem in airlines. The seat assignment problem can be modeled as a stochastic programming model which is difficulty to solve optimally. However, with some assumptions on the demand distribution functions and a linear approximation technique, we can transform the complex stochastic programming model to a Linear Programming model. Some computational experiments are performed to evaluate out model with randomly generated data. They show that our model has a good performance comparing to existing models, and can be considered as a basis for further studies on improving existing seat assignment models.

  • 최근 수입경영은 항공운송산업뿐만 아니라 이와 유사한 일회성상품(perishable assets)의 성격을 갖는 산업 전 부문에서 널리 활용되고 있다. 본 논문은 항공산업에서 활용되고 있는 정태적 좌석할당모형을 기반으로 시점마다 무작위로 발생하는 고 저가의 항공수요가 각 요금수준별 사전 할당된 좌석의 유무에 상관없이 필요에 따라 상하 이동을 하며 고가수요가 저가의 좌석을 선택할 수도, 저가의 수요가 고가의 좌석을 구입할 수도 있다는 전제로 기존의 한 방향 좌석할당모형과 대별되는 양방향 좌석할당모형을 개발한다. 또한 본 모형을 기반으로 항공사 수입이 기존의 한 방향 수요이동을 고려한 모형과 비교하여 수입을 더욱 극대화 시킬 수 있다는 사실을 실증한다. 실증방법은 C-프로그램을 활용하여, 수요의 가격수준을 국내 K항공사에서 한국지역 판매를 위해 활용되고 있는 4가지 운임으로 구분하고, 수요분포는 최대값과 최소값을 발생확률에 따라 난수를 이용하게 되며, 요금수준은 한국지역의 요금수준분포를 참조하여 고가를 100, 90, 85, 80 수준으로 하여 모의실험을 시행한다. 그 결과 고가의 수요에 지나친 좌석할당을 시행하는 경우를 제외하고는 수요의 양방향을 고려한 항공좌석할당 방법이 높은 수준의 수입을 창출할 수 있다는 결론을 얻게 된다.

  • This paper presents a concept on seat assignment systems. The concept is based on the assumption that customers or passengers prefer to select seats at their own choosing and allowing them to do so would fragment remaining seats. This undesirable condition may make a group of people intending to be seated together unable to find a sufficient number of consecutive seats. The concept proposed is to set aside a number of seats when the map of available seats is shown for customer's selection. A number of functions are created to allot seats to be visible for choosing according to the number and locations of the remaining seats and the number in the group of the passengers. Passengers' preferences such as window or aisle seating, front seating are taken into accounts. A primitive example of seat assignment system of a Boeing 717 aircraft, assuming the number of passengers in a group being 1, 2 or 3, is given based on the concept.

  • 최근 비행기, 기차, 버스를 비롯하여 극장이나 도서관 좌석 등과 같은 자원을 효과적으로 배정하고 관리하는 시스템이 개발되고 있다. 그러나 한정된 좌석 자원을 초과하는 수요가 발생하면 이 자원을 효율적으로 관리하고 이용할 때는 많은 어려움이 발생한다. 기존의 한정 된 좌석 자원의 배정 및 관리 방식은 중앙 시스템에서 집중 관리로 처리되고 있다. 그러나 이러한 방법은 사용자 개개인의 선호도를 고려하지 못 할 뿐만 아니라 각 사용자에게 공평한 기회를 제공하지 못한다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 사용자 관점에서 한정된 도서관 열람실 좌석 자원을 효율적으로 이용하기 위하여 고객이 직접 좌석을 선택하고 좌석에 대한 기회를 균등하게 가질 수 있는 고객 중심의 좌석 할당 시스템을 설계하고 구현한다.

Optimal Booking Limit Decision in the Presence of Strategic Customer Behavior

  • We consider a two-period airline revenue management problem where customers may act strategically. Specifically, we study a two-fare-class airline seat inventory allocation problem which allow for the possibility that a customer may decide to defer to purchase in the hope that a cheaper ticket than those currently on offer (expensive tickets) become available. We also allow for the possibility that some customer will buy a more expensive ticket if the cheaper tickets are not available. We show how to find the optimal booking limits in the presence of such strategic customer behavior and investigate the impact of such strategic customer behavior on the expected revenue. The results are compared with those by the expected marginal seat revenue (EMSR) heuristic approach (Belobaba, 1987, 1989) with strategic customer behavior.

  • The trend toward ubiquitous computing does not represent simply a change in the way people access and use information. In the end it will have a profound effect on the way people work with each other. In this paper, we have defined functionalities of an information system that helps operate a kind of smart office environment, and implemented the system using RFID technology. The system provides three major functions-time and attendance management, personalized message notification, and flexible seat allocation for a smart working center. We have also suggested the key performance indicators and performed a KPI analysis to measure an efficiency of implemented system.

  • The concept of revenue management (RM) has been used widely in the air-transportation industry, and proven as a good system for managing perishable assets. While the airlines are the oldest and most sophisticated users of RM, these practices have been an enormously important innovation in other service industries such as the travel, the railway, the internet and the manufacturing industries. In this paper, reviewing several studies on RM, we introduce the fundamental concepts and the major models of RM covering seat allocation with multiple fare classes and overbooking. Future research directions also are suggested.
