  • In this paper, we study the estimation of angle, range and polarization parameters of a bistatic polarization sensitive frequency diverse array multiple-input multiple-output (PSFDA-MIMO) radar system. The application of polarization sensitive array in receiver is explored. A signal model of bistatic PSFDA-MIMO radar system is established. In order to utilize the multi-dimensional structure of array signals, the matched filtering radar data can be represented by a third-order tensor model. A joint estimation of the direction-of-departure (DOD), direction-of-arrival (DOA), range and polarization parameters based on parallel factor (PARAFAC) algorithm is proposed. The proposed algorithm does not need to search spectral peaks and singular value decomposition, and can obtain automatic pairing estimation. The method was compared with the existing methods, and the results show that the performance of the method is better. Therefore, the accuracy of the parameter estimation is further improved.

  • Alert-confirm detection is a highly efficient method to improve phased array radar search performance. It comprises sequential detection in two steps: alert detection, in which a target is detected at a low detection threshold, and confirm detection, which is triggered by alert detection with a longer dwell time to minimize false alarms. This paper provides a design method for applying the alert-confirm detection to multifunctional radars. We find optimum dwell times and false alarm probabilities for each alert detection and confirm detection under the dual constraints of total false alarm probability and maximum allowable dwell time per position. These optimum values are expressed as a function of the mean new target appearance rate. The proposed alert-confirm detection increases the maximum detection range even with a shorter frame time than that of uniform scanning.

  • This paper describes two kinds of personal hand-held electronic devices to enhance marine leisure safety. The one is Radar response-type safety device triggering by the pulse signal from a commercial 9GHz-band Radar to provide quick search and rescue with combined civilian-government-military fleets. The other one is M-RFID (Marine Radio Frequency IDentification) based safety electronic device using 900MHz Tx/Rx with spread spectrum frequency hopping and GPS. Through the field tests at sea using Korea Coast Guard's warship the operating performances are verified. Further plan for practical use of each device was also discussed.

  • This paper deals with a beam scheduling method in fighter interleaving mode. Not only the priority of tasks but also operational requirements that air-to-ground and air-to-air search tasks should be executed alternatively are established to maximize high-quality of situational awareness. We propose a real-time heuristic beam scheduling method that is advanced from WMDD to satisfies the requirements. The proposed scheduling method is implemented in a simulation environment resembling the task processing mechanism and measurement model of a radar. Performance improvement in terms of task delay time is observed.

  • Fresh water discharge from the sea floor strongly affects a coastal ecology and the diffusion of contaminants. Much fresh water discharge has been found in the edge of Kurobe alluvial fan, in which annual rainfall is over 4000mm and there is abundant groundwater. However, it is difficult to find the groundwater discharge, thus the search of possible areas with some remote sensing tools is required. Because the temperature of the discharge point is relatively low compared with the surrounding sea water surfaces, there is a possibility to detect the area as an irregular zone of thermal infrared images. Two anomalous temperature zones, which have no surface streams from rivers, are detected by ASTER thermal-infrared images. One of them was verified as the groundwater discharge point by dives. In addition, the distribution of water table under the land side of the two areas is also detected as irregular zones by a ground-penetrating radar

  • In this paper, a speed-up technique for the non-local means (NLM) image denoising method based on local binary descriptor (LBD) is proposed. In the NLM, most of the computation time is spent on searching for non-local similar patches in the search window. The local binary descriptor which represents the structure of patch as binary strings is employed to speed up the search process in the NLM. The descriptor allows for a fast and accurate preselection of non-local similar patches by bitwise operations. Using this approach, a tradeoff between time-saving and noise removal can be obtained. Simulations exhibit that despite being principally constructed for speed, the proposed algorithm outperforms in terms of denoising quality as well. Furthermore, a parallel implementation on GPU brings NLM-LBD to real-time image denoising.

  • Compared with the TWS(Track While Scan) tracking that uses scan-to-scan correlation at search illuminations for targets track, a phased array radar can use adaptive tracking which assigns additional track illuminations and the track formation range can be improved as a result. In this paper, an adaptive tracking, the search and track illuminations of a target are synchronized such that the extra illuminations are evenly distributed between the search illuminations, is proposed. Markov chain and track formation range for the proposed adaptive tracking are shown with them for the conventional TWS. The simulation result shows that the proposed adaptive tracking has improved track formation range by 27.6 % compared with the conventional TWS tracking under same track confirmation criterion.

  • In this paper, we have identified the system instability factors in a bistatic radar system using pulse chasing and considered their effects on the bistatic receiver's MTI(Moving Target Indication) improvement performance. The pulse chasing is a method to efficiently scan a restricted search area within the limited transmitter power and time in a bistatic radar and to track a series of transmitted pulses using the receiver beam which has ideally matched to the pulse propagation rate. In this paper, we have discussed the interrelationship between the pulse chasing and time and frequency/phase synchronization and described the effects of the identified system instability factors on two kinds of MTI filter configuration, single delay-line and double delay-line, in the bistatic radar. And also, we have confirmed that the overall system improvement is restricted by a lower improvement factor among identified them, and discussed the allowable tolerance of the time and frequency/phase synchronization in the bistatic system.

  • Radar task scheduling deals with the assignment of task to efficiently enhance the radar performance on the limited resource environment. In this paper, total weighted tardiness is adopted as the objective function of task scheduling in operation of multiple multi-function radars. To take into account real-time implementability, heuristic index-based methods are presented and investigated. Numerical simulations for generic search and track scenarios are performed to evaluate the proposed methods, in particular investigating the effectiveness of multi-radar operation concepts.

  • Active phased array antenna structure is used for modern multi-function radars. To search targets in high clutter environment, the radar receiver needs high dynamic range performance. Though active phased array antenna structure lead to increase of SNR, the SFDR is not increased. In this paper, high SFDR receiver of X-band active phased array radar was designed and manufactured. One channel digital receiver is connected to 32 T/R modules and one PCB assembly is composed to 2 channel digital receivers with RF part, ADC part, LO distribution part and digital down conversion part. A commercial FIFO board was used for digital receiver measurement about major performance in digital output signal condition. The measured digital receiver gain and SFDR is 33 dB and more than 81 dBc each.
