The two-dimensional bin packing problem(2D-BPP) has been known to be NP-hard, and it is difficult to solve the problem exactly. Many approximation methods, such as genetic algorithm, simulated annealing and tabu search etc, have been also proposed to gain better solutions. However, the existing approximation algorithms, such as branch-and-bound and tabu search, have shown the low efficiency and the long execution time due to a large of iterations. To solve these problems, we first define the fitness function to simplify and increase the utility of algorithm. The function decides whether an item is packed into a given area, and as an important information for a packing strategy, the number of subarea that can accommodate a given item is obtained from the variant of the fitness function. Then we present a heuristic algorithm BF for 2D bin packing, constructed by the fitness function and subarea. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm will be expressed by the comparison experiments with the heuristic and the metaheuristic of the literatures. As comparing with existing heuristic algorithms and metaheuristic algorithms, it has been found that the packing rate of algorithm BP is the same as 97% as existing heuristic algorithms, FFF and FBS, or better than them. Also, it has been shown the same as 86% as tabu search algorithm or better.
This study reviewed the influence of consumer innovativeness and consumer knowledge on external information search behavior for the purchase of high-tech products. The strategies for offering information effectively for high-tech products may be proposed as follows based on the results of this study. First, the advertisements of high-tech products which are generally encountered need to offer sufficient information about the products in addition to fulfilling the function of persuading consumers. Second, it is necessary to implement an information network so that neutral offerings of information about high-tech products may be made promptly by reliable institutions. Third, information about high-tech products should be offered with easier explanations so that there should be no information-underprivileged class in utilizing the function of high-tech products.

The major drawback in the Code Excited Linear Prediction type vocoders is their large computational requirements. In this paper, a simple method is proposed to reduce the pitch searching time in the pitch filter almost without degradation of quality. On the basis of the observational regularity of the correlation function of speech, only the limited numbers of pitch lags are considered to be an optimum pitch. This is done by skipping the negative envelope side of the correlation function and limiting the maximum number of lags to be considered preliminarily. By doing so, we can reduce the computational time of pitch searching more than 51% with negligible quality degradation. In addition to that, by combining that method with the conventional delta search technique, we can reduce the computational time requirements more than 60% without serious lowering the speech quality in segmental SNR measure compared to the conventional full search method.

The 2 DBPP(Two-Dimensional Bin Packing Problem) is a problem of packing each item into a bin so that no two items overlap and the number of required bins is minimized under the set of rectangular items which may not be rotated and an unlimited number of identical rectangular bins. The 2 DBPP is strongly NP-hard and finds many practical applications in industry. In this paper we discuss a tabu search approach which includes tabu list, intensifying and diversification strategies. The HNFDH(Hybrid Next Fit Decreasing Height) algorithm is used as an internal algorithm. We find that use of the proper parameter and function such as maximum number of tabu list and space utilization function yields a good solution in a reduced time. We present a tabu search algorithm and its performance through extensive computational experiments.
In this paper, a new approach is proposed to select the optimal sitting and sizing of distributed solar photovoltaic generation (SPVG) in a radial electrical distribution systems (EDS) considering load/generation uncertainties. Here, distributed generations (DGs) allocation problem is modeled as optimization problem with network loss based objective function under various equality and inequality constrains in an uncertain environment. A boundary power flow is utilized to address the uncertainties in load/generation forecasts. This approach facilitates the consideration of random uncertainties in forecast having no statistical history. Uncertain solar irradiance is modeled by beta distribution function (BDF). The resulted optimization problem is solved by a new Dynamic Harmony Search Algorithm (DHSA). Dynamic band width (DBW) based DHSA is proposed to enhance the search space and dynamically adjust the exploitation near the optimal solution. Proposed approach is demonstrated for two standard IEEE radial distribution systems under different scenarios.

In this study, we have tested the feasibility of the convex non-linear objective model and the line search optimization method for the fluence map optimization (FMO). We've created the convex nonlinear objective function with simple bound constraints and attained the optimal solution using well-known gradient algorithms with an Armijo line search that requires sufficient objective function decrease. The algorithms were applied to 10 head-and-neck cases. The numbers of beamlets were between 900 and 2,100 with a 3 mm isotropic dose grid. Nonlinear optimization methods could efficiently solve the IMRT FMO problem in well under a minute with high quality for clinical cases.

Bankruptcy prediction has drawn a lot of research interests in previous literature, and recent studies have shown that machine learning techniques achieved better performance than traditional statistical ones. This paper employs a relatively new machine learning technique, support vector machines (SVMs). to bankruptcy prediction problem in an attempt to suggest a new model with better explanatory power and stability. To serve this purpose, we use grid search technique using 5-fold cross-validation to find out the optimal values of the parameters of kernel function of SVM. In addition, to evaluate the prediction accuracy of SVM. we compare its performance with multiple discriminant analysis (MDA), logistic regression analysis (Logit), and three-layer fully connected back-propagation neural networks (BPNs). The experiment results show that SVM outperforms the other methods.

This paper presents a design procedure of engine power system for vehicle. The implementation and operation environment of engine plant is somewhat diversed through the various kind of vehicles. Regarding this point, we adopt a multi-purposed design objective function which can be easily modified to reflect diverse mount design rules which have been recommended and used generally by relating fields. To search the mount parameters which provide the optimal performance, a direct search method based on an orthogonal array is developed and applied. Through several simulated results, the effectiveness of the developed disign tool is investigated and discussed.

People have tendency of forgetting music title, though they easily remember particular part of music. If a music search system can find the title through a part of melody, this will provide very convenient interface to users. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that enables this type of search using feature transformation function. The original music is transformed to new feature information with sequential melodies. When a melody that is a part of search music is given to the system, the music retrieval system searches the music similar to the feature information of the melody. Moreover, this transformation function can be easily extended to various music recognition systems.
This study presents a hunting search based optimum design algorithm for engineering optimization problems. Hunting search algorithm is an optimum design method inspired by group hunting of animals such as wolves, lions, and dolphins. Each of these hunters employs hunting in a different way. However, they are common in that all of them search for a prey in a group. Hunters encircle the prey and the ring of siege is tightened gradually until it is caught. Hunting search algorithm is employed for the automation of optimum design process, during which the design variables are selected for the minimum objective function value controlled by the design restrictions. Three different examples, namely welded beam, cellular beam and moment resisting steel frame are selected as numerical design problems and solved for the optimum solution. Each example differs in the following ways: Unlike welded beam design problem having continuous design variables, steel frame and cellular beam design problems include discrete design variables. Moreover, while the cellular beam is designed under the provisions of BS 5960, LRFD-AISC (Load and Resistant Factor Design-American Institute of Steel Construction) is considered for the formulation of moment resisting steel frame. Levy Flights is adapted to the simple hunting search algorithm for better search. For comparison, same design examples are also solved by using some other well-known search methods in the literature. Results reveal that hunting search shows good performance in finding optimum solutions for each design problem.
