  • Since the basement building like the communication hole and etc. is built under the ground where it is pressed by the water, the leakage happens due to the dried-shrinking crack, the sinking crack, the creation of the work-joint of the building and etc. caused by the character of the material and construction way of the reinforced concrete building. Especially, a lot of repair for the leakage cannot help but being taken in temporary way without any noticeable countermeasure. Therefore, this kind of repair is socially criticized many times that this is defective construction even if this costs a lot. The fundamental reason of the above mentioned symptoms can be found in the creation of the work-joint caused by the character of the concrete building, the limitation of the physical performance of the existing water-proof and repair material, the limitation of the construction, the limitation of the physical sustaining performance of the concrete building, the limitation(heat-injury, deterioration) of the constancy of the durability caused by aging and etc. Therefore, in this study, we would like to present the better understanding on the water-proof seal relating to the application at the spot and its test evaluation related data since the necessity of the establishment of the quality control standard and the performance testing way on the relevant water-proof seal is rising a lot to regulate the water-proof technology and the leakage repair technology in accordance with the growth of the demand on the facility.

Material Properties for Reliability Improvement in the FEA Results for Rubber Parts (고무 제품 유한요소해석 결과의 신뢰 향상을 위한 물성치 연구)

  • We studied the material properties for reliability improvement in finite element analysis results for a nitrile butadiene rubber hub-bearing seal and for a carbon-filled rubber mount used in a vehicle. It was difficult to measure the material properties of hundreds of types of rubber for the mount design. Thus, we suggested that the engineering stressstrain relations from pure shear test data could be synthesized by using simple tension data and Poisson's ratio. We defined Poisson's ratio by using a function of principal stretches to synthesize the stress-strain relations for a pure shear test. A transformation of the pure shear data was applied to the experimental values to obtain the predicted results when the strain approaches 100%. In the finite element analysis for the contact force of a hub-bearing seal, the strain results that used the transformation of the pure shear data and simple tension data almost corresponded to the experimental values. The Effect of Yttrium on Corrosion Behavior of NiAl Intermetallic Compound in the Molten Carbonate Salt (용융탄산염내에서의 NiAl합금의 내식성에 미치는 Yttrium의 첨가 영향)

  • Since a wet-seal area of Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell (MCFC) operated at $650^{\circ}C$ is exposed to severe environment, a life-time of MCFC is influenced by the corrosion resistance of separator. In order to improve corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel used as separator material, AI- base alloy such as NiAI has been widely used as coat¬ing material on the wet-seal area. The purpose of this work is to develope a more protective coating material by adding yttrium on NiAI alloy. An immersion test and a polarization test were performed in molten carbonate salt at $650^{\circ}C$ to estimate corrosion resistance of the NiAI alloy and the NiAl/Y alloys with up to L5at% yttrium. NiAl/Y alloys showed better corrosion resistance than NiAI alloy. We found that more than 0.7 at% yttrium was required to improve the corrosion resistance of NiAI alloy in molten carbonate salt at $650^{\circ}C$.

  • The rotary joint connecting the upper and lower structures of construction machinery and special vehicles transmits hydraulic pressure as the shaft and housing rotate, and multiple seals are assembled to prevent oil leakage into the oil flow channel. Because the seal material is rigid and difficult to assemble, we sought a method to assemble it after cutting. The shapes of the cutting surface are L-shaped and / shaped, and the leakage standard when hydraulic pressure is applied is the contact pressure generated on the cutting surface. The structure and material of the seal are composed of a double elastomer, and nonlinear contact structural analysis is performed when only the high-rigidity PE material is cut. Studies have shown that the shorter the cutting length, the better the leakage prevention and the higher the possibility of leakage to the bottom surface where NBR and PE come into contact rather than the top surface where the PE and the housing come into contact.

  • In this study, we report that effects of a filler with a high coefficient of thermal expansion on a sealant for high-temperature ($750{\sim}850^{\circ}C$) SOFC. We designed a $SiO_2-BaO-ZnO-B_2O_3-Al_2O_3$ glass system with a softening temperature higher than $750^{\circ}C$. The properties of the glass system show not only low volumetric shrinking but also low swelling. The glass system did not create a crystal phase during along-term heat treatment. We fabricated a seal gasket with 0, 10, 15, and 20 wt% cristobalite added as filler materials with glass powder. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the seal gasket increased according to cristobalite content. During along-term heat treatment, the leak rate decreased by about 5% after a heat treatment in an oxidizing atmosphere at $750^{\circ}C$ for 2000 h, also decreasing by about 6% after a heat treatment in a reducing atmosphere at $750^{\circ}C$ for 1000 h.

  • This paper is a study on using gas springs for reduced friction in the elevation of the large television stand. Target is applied to the operation of the elevation over 50-inch television that uses a gas spring. Gas seal lip technology is needed for development acting on the piston rod in order to obtain a reduction in friction in elevation operation. In order to acting on the gas seal lip technology, the improved friction force can be obtained through the inner diameter of gas seal lip, the design of cutting angle and the changes of material.

  • Hydraulic reciprocating seal has been widely used to prevent fluid leakage in hydraulic systems. Also, hydraulic reciprocating seal plays a significant role to provide lubricant film at contacting interface to minimize tribological problems due to sliding with counter material. To predict lifetime of hydraulic reciprocating seal, quantitative understanding of wear characteristics with respect to operating conditions such as normal force and sliding speed is needed. In this work, effect of sliding speed on wear of polyurethane (PU) hydraulic reciprocating seal were experimentally investigated using a pin-on-disk tribo-tester. The wear characteristics of PU specimens were quantitatively determined by comparing the confocal microscope data before and after test. It was found that the wear rate of PU specimens decreased from $4.9{\times}10^{-11}mm^3$ to $1.1{\times}10^{-11}mm^3/Nm$ as sliding speed increased from 120 mm/s to 940 mm/s. Also, it was observed that the friction decreased slightly as the sliding speed increased. Improvement of lubrication state with increasing sliding speed was likely to be responsible for this enhanced friction and wear characteristics. This result also suggests that decrease in sliding distance between PU elastomer and counter materials at lower sliding speed is preferred. Furthermore, the quantitative assessment of wear characteristics of PU specimen may be useful in prediction of lifetime of PU hydraulic reciprocating seal if the allowed degree of wear for failure of the seal is provided.

Comparison of Solid Circulation Characteristics with Change of Lower Loop Seal Geometry in a Circulating Fluidized Bed (순환유동층에서 하부 루프실 형태 변화에 따른 고체순환 특성 비교)

  • Circulating fluidized bed system consists of SEWGS reactor - lower loop seal - regeneration reactor - riser - cyclone - upper loop seal has been used for solid circulation between the SEWGS reactor and the regeneration reactor in a SEWGS system for pre-combustion $CO_2$ capture. A vertical type lower loop seal has been used in current system but this lower loop seal requires high gas flow rate through the lower loop seal for fluidization and smooth solid circulation, and consequently, causes slugging behavior sometimes. To overcome these disadvantages, inclined type lower loop seal was proposed by this study. Solid circulation characteristics with change of lower loop seal geometry were measured and compared in a bubbling - bubbling - riser type circulating fluidized bed using $CO_2$ absorbent (P-78) as bed material at ambient temperature and pressure. We could conclude that the inclined lower loop seal is better than the vertical type lower loop seal from the viewpoints of minimum flow rate requirement for stable solid circulation and solid height change during solid circulation.

On the Sealing Force of Perfluoroelastomer O-rings Including Temperature Effects (온도를 고려한 FFKM O-링의 밀봉력에 관한 연구)

  • O-ring seal is widely used for sealing pressure vessels and oil containers in various applications of mechanical equipments. The doughnut shape of the O-ring is very important components in most of the system assembly of mechanical apparatus. This paper presents the sealing force of a pressurized perfluoroelastomer O-ring, which is very important contact seal in sealing the semiconductor equipment. The sealing pressure is measured by experimental method and analyzed numerically by using the non-linear MARC finite element program. The seal tester is made to measure the contact force and displacement of the O-ring with an automatic control system of the working temperature. The results show the reasonable agreements between the computed FEM results and measured ones when the operating temperature is moderate temperature. But the compared values between the computed and tested results show a difference because of the increased temperature, which is related to the non-linear parameter of the O-ring material.

  • The failure modes of pneumatic directional control valves include leakage, wear of the spool seal, and sticking of the spool. Among them, the main failure mode of the valve is leakage. The leakage is caused by the wear of the spool seal. However, due to the characteristics of the seal material, the leakage rate is fluctuated a lot rather than constantly increased over time. If life analysis is performed using the first time data of leakage failure, predicted life cycles can be different from the real life cycles. This paper predicts life cycles of the pilot pneumatic directional control valve based on the three point moving average which considers the average of the fluctuating leakage rate.
