The diet composition of Takifugu niphobles was studied with 587 specimens collected in the eelgrass bed of Jangpyeong-ri, Tongyeong, Korea, using a seine net, monthly from May 2016 to April 2017. The standard length (SL) of the specimens ranged from 0.7 to 9.0 cm. The stomach contents analysis indicated that T. niphobles consumed mainly amphipods (%IRI: 91.0 %). In addition, T. niphobles fed on small quantities of copepods, polychaetes, insects, bivalves and crabs. T. niphobles consumed mainly amphipods over all size class. Smaller individuals (less than 4 cm SL) fed mainly on amphipods and copepods. The proportion of copepods decreased, as body size increased, whereas the consumption of polychaetes increased gradually. The seasonal variation in the diet composition of T. niphobles was significant. Amphipods were most common prey in all seasons. Copepods decreased from summer to spring gradually whereas the consumption of polychaetes increased in autumn.
Arsenic (As) is a well-known human carcinogen and its dietary exposure has been found to be the major route of entry into general population. This study was performed to assess the body levels of As and their associated factors in Korean adults by analyzing total As in urine. Urine and blood samples were collected from 580 adults aged 20 years and older, who had not been exposed to As occupationally. Demographic information was collected with the help of a standard questionnaire, including age, smoking, alcohol intake, job profiles, and diet consumed in the last 24 hrs of the study. Total As, sum of As(III), As(V), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), in urine was determined using atomic absorption spectrometer involving hydride generation method. The geometric mean concentration of total As in urine was $7.10{\mu}g/L$. Urine As was significantly higher in men ($7.63{\mu}g/L$) than in women ($6.75{\mu}g/L$). Age, smoking, alcohol consumption, and job profiles of study subjects did not significantly affect the concentration of As in urine. No significant relationship was observed between body mass index (BMI), Fe, and total cholesterol in serum and urinary As. Urine As level was positively correlated with seaweeds, fishes & shellfishes, and grain intake. A negative correlation between urinary As level and HDL-cholesterol in serum and meat intake was observed. Overall, these results suggest that urinary As concentration could be affected by seafood consumption. Therefore, people who frequently consume seafood and grain need to be monitored for chronic dietary As exposure.
This study aimed to segment Chinese fisheries consumer market by means of cluster analysis based on Shanghai region consumers. The survey is conducted to 350 shanghai people on March 17-21 in 2014 and investigate demographic characteristics and consumer's behaviors unique to each segmented market by preference, labelling, quality, price, safety. The result of cluster analysis identified four market segments such as Catering type market, Worth pursuing type market, Substance pursuing type market, Trend pursuing type market. Catering type market is a passive fisheries consumption market and is not high attractive for Korea fisheries export market. Value pursuing type market consider importance to labelling, origin, brand and require high-quality and differentiation strategies. This market's main target species are high price fisheries such as tuna, salmon, crocker. Substance pursuing type market consider fisheries's safety and quality and purchases more popular fisheries such as crocker, hairtail, promfret, mackerel, squid. Trend pursuing type market's consumers prefer to purchase brands and trendy seafood rather than taste.
The aims of this study is to analyze the purchasing behavior of customers purchasing seafood using internet shopping mall based on the sales data of Suhyup Shopping Mall in 2016. The research shows three facts. First, 46.1% of those customers marine products in Suhyup Shopping Mall are purchasing less than 2 times a year and 62.7% of them are purchasing less than 5 times a year. Seconds, The amount of purchases of marine products using Suhyup Shopping Mall is very small. The proportion of purchasers with less than ₩100,000 per year is 48.5%, and the proportion of customers with annual purchases of less than ₩300,000 is 68.2%. Last, Relatively strong items were found by region and age. Abortion was a relatively strong item in the 20s, and In the 30s, the aquatic product set was a relatively strong item. In the 60s are seashells / scallops / shellfish and other fish, 70s are dried yellow croaker, abalone, tile fish and other fish. In the 60s and 70s, the other fishes showed strong relative strengths in terms of quantity and amount. But There were no relatively strong items due to regional differences according to the metropolitan area and nonmetropolitan area.
The feeding habits of yellowfin goby (Acanthogobius flavimanus) were studied based on the examination of stomach contents of 171 specimens collected from September 2013 to August 2014 in the tidal flat of Sangnae-ri, Suncheon, Korea. The size of A. flavimanus ranged from 10.6 to 18.3 cm in standard length (SL). A. flavimanus mainly consumed amphipods (especially Corophium sp.). Its diet also included shrimps, crabs, fishes and polychaetes. Ontogenetic changes in diet composition of A. flavimanus were evident. The portion of amphipods and polychaetes was inversely proprotional to the increase in fish size whereas it was directly proportional to the increase in the consumption of shrimps and crabs increased.
The diet composition of Arctoscopus japonicus was studied using 448 specimens collected in the coastal waters of East Sea, Korea. The size of the specimens ranged from 6.2-25.3 cm in total length (TL). A. japonicus were fed mainly on amphipods that constituted 76.1% in IRI. Euphausiids were the second largest prey component. The diets also include small quantities of crabs, copepods, mysids, cephalopods, monogeneans, and fishes. A. japonicus showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Smaller individuals (6-10 cm, TL) fed mainly on amphipods. The proportion of amphipods decreased as body size increased, whereas the consumption of euphausiids gradually increased (10-14 cm, TL). As the body size more increased, the proportion of amphipods increased whereas euphausiids decreased (14-26 cm, TL).
Methods for the development of home meal replacement seafood tailored to consumer needs for the advanced use of Broughton's ribbed ark Scapharca broughtonii (BRA) in Korea are required. In this study, we developed a cheese-topped, semi-dried, and seasoned Broughton's ribbed ark (S-BRA) tailored for the younger generation with an improved texture and fish odor. The optimization of conditions to improve the texture and fish odor was performed using RSM. The design of the model was appropriate because there was no significant difference (P>0.05) between the predicted and actual values of moisture content, hardness, and overall acceptance, and the optimal preparation conditions were a vinegar content of 2.68%, a soaking time of 62 min, a drying temperature of 60℃, and a time of 162 min. The S-BRA manufactured under these optimal conditions exhibited a lower odor intensity compared to the unsoaked and undried control, suggesting that the fish odor of S-BRA has been improved. The moisture content related to the texture of the S-BRA was lower than that of the control, and the hardness was higher. Therefore, the S-BRA developed in this study will appeal to people of all ages, especially the younger generation; their consumption is expected to increase.
Diet composition and trophic level of Trachurus japonicus were studied using 417 specimens collected by trawls, set nets and purse seine fisheries from March 2019 to February 2020 in the South Sea of Korea. The size of T. Japonicus ranged from 7.0 to 49.8 cm in total length. T. japonicus were a carnivore that fed mainly on euphausiids and pisces. In eddition, T. japonicus fed on small quantities of cephalopods, crabs etc. T. japonicus showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. The proportion of euphausiids decreased inversely proportional to body size whereas the consumption of pisces gradually increased. As body size of T. japonicus increased the mean number of prey per stomach and the mean weight of prey per stomach tended to increase, but the mean number of prey per stomach was not significantly different. As a result of the feeding strategy analysis, T. japonicus were specialized feeders with pisces and euphausiids as their dominant prey. The trophic level ranged between 3.57 ± 0.54 and 3.91 ± 0.65, and increased asymptotically with size of specimens. The average trophic level of the T. japonicus was 3.79 ± 0.61.
