  • In summer season of 1998, a huge flood occurred around the Yangtze River in the eastern China. The low salinity water less than 28 psu from the river was detected around the southeastern part of the Jeju Island which is located in the southern part of the Korean peninsula. We studied how to detect low salinity water from the Yangtze River, which gives terrible damages to the Korean fisheries. We got the relationships between low surface salinity, turbid water from the Yangtze River and digital ocean color using remote sensing of SeaWiFS satellite in the northern East China Sea in summer seanson of 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001. The charts of salinity in the northern East China Sea were made by the regenerating of the satellite ocean color data with the formula from the relationships between low salinity, in situ turbid water (transparency) and satellite ocean color.

  • Internal wave with a soliton-like, large amplitudes within several kilometers, is frequently observed in the sea surface caused by tidal rectification due to sill or rough topographic changes. Internal waves can perturb current and density field, initiate bottom sediment re -suspension and mix nutrients to photic zone. Previous studies indicate that the appearance of internal wave in the Lombok Strait have been detected in SAR image data. This paper studies effect of internal wave in the Lombok Strait to chlorophyll distribution in the surrounded areas using SeaWiFS and ERS SAR images data during 1996-2001 periods. The preliminary result concludes that the internal waves presumably affect phytoplankton distribution spreading southeastward in the coast off Bali Island. The distribution of phytoplankton at southern coastline off Bali Island when internal wave occurred is elongated and distributed further to westward (from 8.8$^{\circ}$ to 10.7$^{\circ}$LS) than the area when internal wave did not occur on August 2000 (from 9.25$^{\circ}$ to 10.25$^{\circ}$LS) as shown in figure 3. It shown that the surface phytoplankton concentration near coastal area, i.e. from 8.8$^{\circ}$ to 9.25$^{\circ}$ LS, increased when internal wave is occurred.

  • Ocean color properties can be quantified by the relationship between the band ratios of the sensor on the ocean color satellites and the measured field ocean color parameters, A tool to determine the abundance of primary organism using the observed ocean color properties from satellite is presented. Coincident to ocean color satellite passes over the Korean waters, the research vessels were deployed to survey the East Sea, the South Sea and the West Sea around the Korean waters, We have been able to have more than 101) data sets containing coincident in situ chlorophyll a and the estimated chlorophyll a derived from SeaWiFS (Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor) from february, 1999 to October, 2001. We were able to develop three proper regional algorithms for the East Sea, the South Sea and the West Sea of the Korean peninsula to estimate chlorophyll a, and set up regional algorithms to quantify the suspended solid in the southern sea of the Korean peninsula, Futhermore we were successful in finding out a simple way of estimating chlorophyll a in the turbid water (Case 2 water) using the relationship between in situ chlorophyll a and the estimated chlorophyll a from the processed level 2 data, using the NASA's global algorithm.

  • Sea ices at the Tatarskiy Straitin the East/Japan Sea appear from November to April. Cold and fresh water, melted from the sea ices, may contain nutrients which are indispensable to spring bloom of phytoplankton and may provide a preferable condition to the spring bloom through changes in vertical structure of water column and stratification. Relation between the spring bloom along the Primorye coast and sea ices in the Tatarskiy Strait were investigated using multi-satellite multi-sensor data; ten-year SeaWiFS chlorophyll-a concentration data and PAR data, sea surface temperatures from NOAA/AVHRR, sea ice concentration and near-surface wind speed data from DMSP/SSMI, near-surface wind vectors from QuikSCAT, and others. We provided evidences of southwestward flowing cold water masses from sea ice and its relation of chlorophyll-a concentration. This study showed that year-to-year variations of chlorophyll-a concentration in spring were positively correlated with those of sea ice concentrations at the Tatarskiy Strait.

  • Atmospheric correction of Landsat Visible and Near Infrared imagery (VIS/NIR) over aquatic environment is more demanding than over land because the signal from the water column is small and it carries immense information about biogeochemical variables in the ocean. This paper introduces two methods, a modified dark-pixel substraction technique (path--extraction) and our spectral shape matching method (SSMM), for the correction of the atmospheric effects in the Landsat VIS/NIR imagery in relation to the retrieval of meaningful information about the ocean color, especially from Case-2 waters (Morel and Prieur, 1977) around Korean peninsula. The results of these methods are compared with the classical atmospheric correction approaches based on the 6S radiative transfer model and standard SeaWiFS atmospheric algorithm. The atmospheric correction scheme using 6S radiative transfer code assumes a standard atmosphere with constant aerosol loading and a uniform, Lambertian surface, while the path-extraction assumes that the total radiance (L/sub TOA/) of a pixel of the black ocean (referred by Antoine and Morel, 1999) in a given image is considered as the path signal, which remains constant over, at least, the sub scene of Landsat VIS/NIR imagery. The assumption of SSMM is nearly similar, but it extracts the path signal from the L/sub TOA/ by matching-up the in-situ data of water-leaving radiance, for typical clear and turbid waters, and extrapolate it to be the spatially homogeneous contribution of the scattered signal after complex interaction of light with atmospheric aerosols and Raleigh particles, and direct reflection of light on the sea surface. The overall shape and magnitude of radiance or reflectance spectra of the atmospherically corrected Landsat VIS/NIR imagery by SSMM appears to have good agreement with the in-situ spectra collected for clear and turbid waters, while path-extraction over turbid waters though often reproduces in-situ spectra, but yields significant errors for clear waters due to the invalid assumption of zero water-leaving radiance for the black ocean pixels. Because of the standard atmosphere with constant aerosols and models adopted in 6S radiative transfer code, a large error is possible between the retrieved and in-situ spectra. The efficiency of spectral shape matching has also been explored, using SeaWiFS imagery for turbid waters and compared with that of the standard SeaWiFS atmospheric correction algorithm, which falls in highly turbid waters, due to the assumption that values of water-leaving radiance in the two NIR bands are negligible to enable retrieval of aerosol reflectance in the correction of ocean color imagery. Validation suggests that accurate the retrieval of water-leaving radiance is not feasible with the invalid assumption of the classical algorithms, but is feasible with SSMM.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate climatological variations from the temporal and spatial surface particulate organic carbon (POC) estimates based on SeaWiFS spectral radiance, and to determine the physical mechanisms that affect the distribution of pac in the Gulf of Mexico. 7-year monthly mean values of surface pac concentration (Sept. 1997 - Dec. 2004) were estimated from Maximum Normalized Difference Carbon Index (MNDCI) algorithm using SeaWiFS data. Synchronous 7-year monthly mean values of remote sensing data (sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface wind (SSW), sea surface height anomaly (SSHA), precipitation rate (PR)) and recorded river discharge data were used to determine physical forcing factors. The spatial pattern of POC was related to one or more factors such as river runoff, wind-derived current, and stratification of the water column, the energetic Loop Current/Eddies, and buoyancy forcing. The observed seasonal change in the POC plume's response to wind speed in the western delta region resulted from seasonal changes in the upper ocean stratification. During late spring and summer, the low-density river water is heated rapidly at the surface by incoming solar radiation. This lowers the density of the fresh-water plume and increases the near-surface stratification of the water column. In the absence of significant wind forcing, the plume undergoes buoyant spreading and the sediment is maintained at the surface by the shallow pycnocline. However, when the wind speed increases substantially, wind-wave action increases vertical motion, reducing stratification, and the sediment were mixed downward rather than spreading laterally. Maximum particle concentrations over the outer shelf and the upper slope during lower runoff seasons were related to the Loop Current/eddies and buoyancy forcing. Inter-annual differences of POC concentration were related to ENSO cycles. During the El Nino events (1997-1998 and 2002-2004), the higher pac concentrations existed and were related to high runoffs in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, but the opposite conditions in the western Gulf of Mexico. During La Nina conditions (1999-2001), low Poe concentration was related to normal or low river discharge, and low PM/nutrient waters in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, but the opposite conditions in the western Gulf of Mexico.

  • Satellite remote sensing technology for ocean observation has evolved considerably in these last twenty years. Ocean color is one of the most important parameters of ocean satellite measurements. This paper describes a remote sensing of ocean color data project - Asian I-Lac Project; it also introduces several case studies using satellite images in the Asian waters. The Asian waters are related to about 30 Asian countries, representing about 60% of the world population. The project aims at generating long-term time series images (planned for 10 years from 1996 to 2006) by combining several ocean color satellite data, i.e., ADEOS-I OCTS and SeaWiFS, and some other sensors. Some typical parameters that could be measured include Chlorophyll- a (Chl-a), Colored Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM), and Suspended Material (SSM). Reprocessed OCTS images display spatial variation of Chl-a, CDOM, and SSM in the Asian waters; a short term variability of phytoplankton blooms was observed in the Gulf of Oman in November 1996 by analyzing OCTS and NOAA sea surface temperature (SST); Chl-a concentrations derived from OCTS and SeaWiFS have also been evaluated in coastal areas of the Taiwan Strait, the Gulf of Thailand, the northeast Arabian Sea, and the Japan Sea. The data system provides scientists with capability of testing or developing ocean color algorithms, and transferring images for their research. We have also analyzed availability of OCTS images. The results demonstrate the potential of long-term time series of satellite ocean color data for research in marine biology, and ocean studies. The case studies show multiple applications of satellite images on monitoring of coastal environments in the Asian Waters.

  • The evolution of intricate and striking patterns of suspended sediments (SS), which are created by certain physical dynamics in the East China and Yellow Seas, has been investigated using satellite ocean color imageries and vertical profiles of particle attenuation and backscattering coefficients. The structure of these patterns can reveal a great deal about the process underlying their formation. Sea surface temperature (SST) analyzed from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) thermal infrared data were used to elucidate the physical factors responsible for the evolution of suspended sediment patterns in the East China Sea. The concomitant patterns of suspended sediments were tracked from the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) ocean color data. The detailed examination about these patterns gave birth to the definition of the evolution of suspended sediments (SS) into four stages: (1) Youth or Infant stage, (2) Younger stage, (3) Mature stage, and (4) Old stage. We describe about the three directional forces of the tidal currents, ocean warm currents and estuarine circulations that lead to occurrence of various stages of the evolution of suspended sediments that increase turbidity at high levels through out the water column of the inner and outer shelf areas during September to April. The occurrence of these four stages could be repeatedly observed. In contrast, vertical profiles of the particle attenuation ($c_{p}$) and backscattering ($b_{bp}$) coefficients displayed obvious patterns of the propagation of suspended sediment plume from the southwestern coastal sea that leads to eventual collision with the massive sediment plume originating from the Yangtze banks of the East China Sea.
