This study was carried out to determine marine environments and phytoplankton community around Mokpo harbour on March to November during the period of 2004-2009. The remarkable fluctuations of marine environments were shown around Mokpo harbour depending on monthly and yearly. Among seasons, summer was a great that was associated with extremely releasing the freshwater from Youngsan River Weir, contributing to effect the fluctuations of water quality. Nevertheless of monthly and yearly, the molecular ratio of N:P was always shown in above 16 that was mainly attributed to freshwater discharge on March to November. This indicates that phosphorus playes an important role in limiting factor as growth in phytoplankton. During this study, Skeletonema costatum was found to be richer than the other groups of diatoms in terms of abundance and species number. Mokpo harbour, with the presence of a narrow avenue for exchange with offshore waters, has limited growth in phytoplankton, but this species is able to well adapt and fast grow under even high level of suspended solid and low intensity of light compared with other species. The discharge of freshwater is associated with significantly fluctuation of marine environments in this region, but it does not affect the quantitative and qualitative distribution of phytoplankton. It is necessary to persistently monitor based on water quality and phytoplankton community.
To explore submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) into the coastal zone of Jeju Island, the water quality analysis with seasonal remotely sensed data was carried out. If the groundwater is directly discharged into the ocean, the water quality of coastal zone is influenced. Therefore sea surface temperature (SST), the transparency, and Chlorophyll-a's concentration were analyzed for extracting the anomaly zone related with SGD using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data acquired on April, August, and December. Then the spatial characteristics of springs, which located along the coastal area, were analyzed by CIS data integration based on Fuzzy logic. The integration results were compared with the anomaly zone extracted from Landsat TM data, and it is considered that springs has close relationship with SGD.
Saemangeum lake is an artificial lake created by reclamation works and an estuary embankment since 2006. The sea water flows into the lake by the operation of two sluice gates, and the freshwater enters into the lake by the upper streams. For the reflection of hydrology and hydrodynamics effects in Saemangeum area, a hydrodynamics model was developed by connecting Hydrological Simulation Program with Fortran (HSPF) and Environmental Fluid Dynamic Code (EFDC). The HSPF was applied to simulate the freshwater discharge from the upper steam watershed, and the EFDC was performed to compute water flow, water temperature, and salinity based on time series from 2008 to 2009. The calibration and validation are performed to analyze horizontal and vertical gradients. The horizontal trend of model simulation results is reflected in the trend of observed data tolerably. The vertical trend is conducted an analysis of seasonal comparisons because of the limitation of vertically observed data. Water temperature reflects on the seasonal changes. Salinity has an effect on the near river input spots. The impact area of salinity is depending on the sea water distribution by gate operation, mainly.
This study carried out several kinds of investigations such as geology, hydrogeology, groundwater level and quality, surface-water quality, and the quantity and quality of groundwater discharge from the subway to identify the causes of groundwater contamination around the subway tunnel at Suyeong District in Busan City. Geostatistical analyses were also conducted to understand the characteristics of groundwater level and quality distributions. There are Kwanganri Beach and Suyeong River in the study area, which are basically influenced by seawater. The total quantities of groundwater utilization and groundwater discharge from the subway tunnel in Suyeong District are 2,282,000 $m^3$/year, which is 2.4 times larger than the sustainable development yield of groundwater. The lowest groundwater level around the subway tunnel is about 32 m below the mean sea-level. The large drawdown of groundwater led to the inflow of seawater and salinized river water toward the subway tunnel, and therefore the quality of groundwater didn't satisfy the criteria of potable, domestic, agricultural and industrial uses. Distribution maps of groundwater level and qualities produced by kriging were very useful for determining the causes of groundwater contamination in the study area. The distribution maps of electrical conductivity, chloride and sulfate showed the extent of seawater intrusion and the forceful infiltration of the salinized Suyeong River. This study revealed that seawater and salinized river water infiltrated into the inland groundwater and contaminated the groundwater around the subway tunnel, because the groundwater level was seriously drawdowned by groundwater discharge from the subway tunnel. The countermeasure for the minimization of groundwater discharge from the subway tunnel is necessary to prevent the groundwater obstacles such as groundwater depletion, groundwater-quality deterioration, and land subsidence.
In general, long-term changes of ecological factors take a pulse form in which they interact with other factors and go through a repeated increasing and decreasing cycle. The coupling of the two approaches the grid model and the box model in ecological modeling can lead to an in-depth understanding of the environment. The study analyzes temporal variations of major storages with an energy system model that formulizes effectively the relationships among nutrients, phytoplankton, and zooplankton in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. An increase of light intensity and standing stock of nutrient increase the magnitude and frequency of pulsing. Also, an immense reduction of nutrient concentration can cause extinction of the pulsing and bring about a steady state. It is concluded that the nutrient loads in freshwater discharge from the Yangtze affect the cycles of major ecological components as well as water quality variables and play an important role in the marine ecosystem.

As a large scale port development in coastal waters proceeds step by step and populations in the vicinity of port are getting increased, the issue on "how to dispose the treated municipal water and wastewater in harbor" brings peoples′ concern. The submarine outfall system discharges the primary or secondary treated effluent at the coastline or in deep water, or between these two. The effluent, which has a density similar to that of fresh water, rises to the sea surface forming plume or jet, together with entraining the surrounding sea water and becomes very dilute. We intended in this paper to investigate the impact on dilution of effluent and the behavior of flume under the conditions of the seasonal and spatial temperature variations, which have not been noticeable in designing effective marine outfall system. To predict and analyze the behaviour and dilution characteristics of plume not just with the effluent temperature, but also with the seasonal variation of temperature of surround water and tidal changes, CORMIX(Cornell Mixing Zone Expert System)-GI have been applied. The results should be used with caution in evaluation the mixing zone characteristics of discharged water. We hope to help for the effective operation of outfall system, probable outfall design, protection of water quality, and warm water discharges from a power plant, etc.

Surface water temperature of a bay (from the south to the north) increases in spring and summer, but decreases in autumn and winter. Due to shallow water depth, freshwater outflow, and weak current, the water temperature in the central to northern part of the bay is greatly affected by the land coast and air temperature, with large fluctuations. Water temperature variations are large in the north-east coast of the bay, but small in the south-west coast. The difference between water temperature and air temperature is greater in winter and in the south-central part of the bay than that in the north to the eastern coast of the bay where sea dykes are located. As the bay goes from south to north, the range of water temperature fluctuation and the phase show increases. When fresh water is released from the sea dike, the surrounding water temperature decreases and then rises, or rises and then falls. The first mode of empirical orthogonal function (EOF) represents seasonal variation of water temperature. The second mode represents the variability of water temperature gradient in east-west and north-south directions of the bay. In the first mode, the maximum and the minimum are shown in autumn and summer, respectively, consistent with seasonal distribution of surface water temperature variance. In the second mode, phases of the coast of Seosan~Boryeong and the east coast of Anmyeon Island are opposite to each other, bordering the center of the deep bay. Periodic fluctuation of the first mode time coefficient dominates in the one-day and half-day cycle. Its daily fluctuation pattern is similar to air temperature variation. Sea conditions and topographical characteristics excluding air temperature are factors contributing to the variation of the second mode time coefficient.
Distribution patterns of the chemical species, contained or dissolved in the sediments and porewater, were studied from the submarine environments around Deok-Jeok Island, Yellow Sea. The sediments in the study area are predominantly composed of medium to coarse sands, and consequently of very low organic carbon (0.003%) -0.26%o dry weight sediments). As opposed to the strong enrichment of porewater with nutrients and heavy metals in the ordinarily muddy, organic-rich sediillents, the porewater enrichment is not intense in this sandy, organic-poor sediments: porewater phosphate is enriched to the maximum of only seven (average two) times over that in the bottom water. Concentrations of the heavy metals dissolved in porewater show a bit greater enrichment than the nutrient: Zn shows the lowest enrichment (7 times that of the bottom water) and Mn the highest (450 times that of the bottom water). However, these enrichments of the chemical species in porewater are the natural consequences of decomposition of the organic matter in sediments, and still fall short in the magnitude of those in the muddy, organic-rich sediments. Mining of the sands in the study area may pose a threat to the seawater quality as it causes a large scale porewater discharge to the bottom water. The additional supply of the nutrients by this discharge may develop an eutrophic state and, in consequence, an excessive nitrification of the water column. Since the residence times of the nutrients are much longer than those of the heavy metals, a long-term monitoring of the concentration changes in the porewater nutrients is very important to assess the potential deterioration of the seawater associated with the sand mining in the study area.

Low salinity water appears by outflow of fresh water from the Yangtze River in southwestern sea of the Korean peninsula. The water volume discharged form the Yangtze River is not constant with year, according to the time series data recorded in the past, the maximum value of the discharged volume is two times as high asr minimum value. Therefore, the distribution of low salinity water over study area with different discharged fresh water volume is studied using numerical model, Princeton Ocean Model (POM). POM is three dimensional circulation model selecting a $\sigma$coordinate. According to the result of numerical simulation by the Model, current velocity on the continental slope is faster than those in other regions, current which flows toward the central part of the Yellow Sea through western part of Jeju exists, and also, southward flow along the coastal region exists. the greater discharged volume from the Yangrze River is. the lower salinity water appears closer to Jeju.
A numerical model is developed to analyze the incompressible unsteady flow induced by the pump trip-out in the cooling water discharge culvert of thermal power plants. The numerical models has various features to deal concureently with the overall behavior of complicated unsteady flow due to the presence of cooling water internal system, seal well, air chamber, culvert, manholes, open channel and sea water. A leap-frog finite difference scheme is employed to solve governing equations, and the model is tested for a simple case of two tanks connected with a pipe. A fixed free surface boundary condition used earlier at the downstream end of culvert for large water body is investigated.
