This study examined the ef ects of freshwater discharge by artificial dikes from the Kanwol and Bunam lakes on the dynamics in the Chunsu Bay, Yellow Sea, Korea, during the summer season based on three-dimensional numerical modeling experiments. Model performances were evaluated in terms of skill scores for tidal elevation, velocity, temperature, and salinity and these scores mostly exceeded 90 %. The variability in residual currents before and after the freshwater discharge was examined. The large amount of lake water discharge through artificial dikes may result in a dramatically changed density field in the Chunsu Bay, leading to an estuarine circulation system. The density-driven current formed as a result of the freshwater inflow through the artificial dikes (Kanwol/Bunam) caused a partial change in the tidal circulation and a change in the scale and location of paired residual eddies. The stratification formed by strengthened static stability following the freshwater discharge led to a dramatic increase in the Richardson number and lasted for a few weeks. The strong stratification suppressed the vertical flux and inhibited surface aerated water mixing with bottom water. This phenomenon would have direct and indirect impacts on the marine environment such as hypoxia/anoxia formation at the bottom.

To know characteristics of water quality in coastal sea around the Keum river estuary in summer, we studied the water quality of surface, middle and bottom level during Jun e~september, 1998. The mean concentrations of COD, DIN, DIP & chlorophyll-a were 1.36mg/L, 28.60㎍-at/L, 0.48㎍-at/L and 4.14㎍/L, respectively, which were over eutrophication criteria in sea water. After the Keum river dyke was constructed, seasonal freshwater discharge was largely changed. About 80% of total annual freshwater discharge was concentrated in summer as rainy season from July to September. The correlation coefficient of DIN versus salinity was shown to be high, and thus the concentration of DIN was closely related to freshwater discharge. Maximum Chlorophyll-a concentration was occurred in September, due to increased DIP concentration, high water temperature and low salinity after heavy rainfall in August. The results of Principal Component Analysis showed that the first factor represented a series of eutrophication factors, the second factor w3s a valiance of seasonal fluctuation, and the third was a variance of progress of mass change.

Masan Bay is a typical enclosed coastal sea and receving body of discharges from Masan city and Changwon city. A POTW(Publicly Owned Treatment Works) started operation from November 1993 when the population of drainage area increased abcent 1.0 million and the effluent from this Plant has being discharged to the enclosed sea where is located at 15km distance from inner Masan Bay. Thus the inflow pattern to Masan Bay has been changed. The main objective of this research is to evaluate the relationship between urban wastewater discharge and water qualify change in a typical coastal zone. It is necessary a) to evaluate the change of input loadings, b) to determine the effect on water quality changes, and c) to find the respective importance of improvement options that must be controlled in the wastewater treatment plant. It was concluded that the sea water quality has being adversely affected by the discharge of insufficiently treated urban wastewater and the nutrient removal in wastewater treatment was very important and urgent.
Assuming that summer surface waters in the South Sea (northern East China Sea) are formed mostly by a mixing of three source water (Changjiang Discharge Water; Kuroshio Water and Yellow Sea Surface Water) we apply optimum multiparameter (OMP) analysis to calculate the mixing ratio of each source water to a given surface water. Since OMP requires more parameters than the number of water types (three in this study), we utilize two radium isotopes of dissolved $^{226}Ra\;and\;^{228}Ra$ along with temperature and salinity. Parameter values of each source water are deduced from in situ and historical data. Results with three source of waters on the surface waters are quite promising with less than $1\%$ of unanswered portions. Results not only reproduce the measured temperature and salinity faithfully but also discern the water masses of similar T and S according to their source water mixing. Extending OMP analysis to a whole water column obviously requires more parameters because more source waters are involved in the water mass formation. Original OMP routine utilized dissolved oxygen and nutrients. However, they seem to be perturbed too much by biological activities in the case of shallow waters. We discussed the use of other potential parameters. Also the benefit of parameter substitution is briefly introduced for the future OMP application on shallow waters.
In order to evaluate and predict the environmental impact of the low-trophic-level ecosystem to environmental changes in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea, an ecological modelling study was undertaken. Simulation results of average distribution patterns and concentrations of water quality factors during the summer by the model were acceptable. Phytoplankton and remineralization rate of organic matter were very important parameters by a sensitivity analysis. Water quality factors showed high values in the estuary of the Yangtze River and in the West and South Sea of Korea and low values in the central area of the Yellow Sea. There is a plume of high values, especially nutrients, off the mouth of the Yangtze that expands or contracts with changes in the discharge strength. Characteristics of responses of water quality factors vary for different scenarios of environmental change, such as land-based pollution sources and atmospheric forcing. It is suggested that changes of light intensity, discharges of input sources, and wind play an important role in the marine ecosystem.
Seawater with salinity of 32.5 psu or less is observed in the southern Japan/East Sea (JES) every autumn. It is confined to a surface layer 30-45 m in depth that expands to cover the entire JES in October. Two sources of "autumn low-salinity water" have been identified from historical hydrographic data in the western JES: East China Sea (ECS) water mixed with fresh water discharge from the Yangtze River (Changjiang) and seawater diluted with melted sea ice in the northern JES. Low-salinity water inflow from the ECS begins in June and reaches its peak in September. Low-salinity water from the northern JES expands southward along the coast, and its horizontal distribution varies among years. A rare observational study of the entire JES in October 1969 indicated that water with salinity less than 33.0 psu covered the southwestern JES; the lowest salinity water was found near the Ulleung Basin. In October 1995, the vertical distribution of salinity observed in a meridional section revealed that water with salinity of 33.6 psu or less was present in the area north of the subpolar front.
As a basic study for developing a forecasting/estimating system that predicts water quality changes when Deep Sea Water (DSW) drains to the ocean after using it, this study was carried out as follows: 1) numerical simulation of the present state at DSW developing region in the East sea using SWEM, 2) numerical prediction of water quality changes by effluent DSW, 3) analysis of influence degree 'With defined DEI (DSW effect index) at F station. On the whole, when DSW drained to the ocean, Chl-a, COD and water-temperature were decreased and DIN, DIP and DO were increased by effluent DSW, and Salinity was steady. According to analysis of influence degree, the influence degree of DIN was the highest and it was high in order of Chl-a, COD, Water-temperature, DO, DIP and Salinity. The influence degree classified by DSW effluent position was predicted that suiface outflow was lower than bottom outflow. Ad When DSW discharge increased 10 times, the influence degree increased about $5{\sim}14$ times.
Surface particulate organic carbon (POC) concentration estimated from Maximum Normalized Difference Carbon Index (MNDCI) algorithm using SeaWiFS data is used to determine spatial and temporal variations of the Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW) in the East China Sea. 10-year monthly POC concentrations (1997-2007) show clearly seasonal variations. Inter-annual variation of POC in whole and three different areas separated by standard deviation is not linearly correlated with the Changjiang River discharge that has decreased after 1998. To determine more detailed spatial and temporal POC variations, we used empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis in summer (Jun.-Sep.) from 2000 to 2007. First mode is spatially and temporally correlated with the area influenced by the Changjiang River discharge. Second mode is temporally less sensitive with the Changjiang River discharge but spatially correlated with north-south patterns. Relatively higher POC variations during 2000 and 2003 were shown in the southern East China Sea. These patterns during 2004 and 2007 moved to the northern East China Sea. This phenomenon is better related to spatial variations of wind-direction than the amount of Changjiang River discharge, which is verified from in-situ measurement.

Due to the development of Yongsan river estuary weir and Yongam-Kumho sea dike, Mokop coastal area is changed. Especially, Discharged water through Yongsan river estuary weir and Yongam-Kumho sea dike, may muse the environmental influences such as the changes of currents pattern and sedimentation in the vicinity of semi-closed Mokpo harbor. This study deals with the collection and analysis of discharge through estuary weir and sea dike, based on that, we analyzed a characteristics of a sea area from simulation. As the results of this study, it was known that discharge mused the changes of a tidal currents pattern and calculated depth variations showed close relation with tidal circulation.
In tidal rivers, the river level, discharge and tide are interrelated. Therefore, the stage-discharge relation that takes no account of tidal effects is inaccurate. For the calculation of river discharge in low water level, this paper attempts to formulate a multiple regression equation of stage-discharge curve to calculate the river discharge in low water level with variables as river level and differences between sea level and river level. Numerical application were perfonned on Ulsan gaging station in Taehwa river, and the comparison with existing rating curve equation showed good applicability of this multiple regression equation.uation.
