A Study on Risk Analysis of Marine Accident for Sea Trial Ships (우리나라 시운전 선박의 해양사고 위험성 조사 분석 연구)

  • Approximately 4,000 vessels including sea trial ships per day are passing, entering or departing from Korea coastal waterway. Sea trial ships have erratic navigating patterns such as quick turning, crash stop and do not communicate with other vessels in appropriate time, so sea trial ships are often to expose dangerous situation such as collision in heavy traffic area. To identify the sea trial vessel's risk factors, this paper surveyed marine traffic volumes for 7 days in Korea harbour & coastal waterway, and it analyzed marine accident rate and intended to identify the risk degree of passing vessels. After that, this researched how many sea trial ship's traffic and what is the sea trial risk among sea trial items. We also conducted survey questionnaire and identified risk factors of sea trial ship. So this paper aimed to enhance the safety of korea coastal waterway to prevent sea trial ship's marine accident.

  • The domestic law establishes a sea trial prohibited area and stipulates that a sea trial is prohibited in this area. However, depending on the user, the term is used interchangeably with on-board test after repaired, In particular, ships undergoing test called a sea trial after remodeling and repairing ships at repair shipyards do not comply with these regulations. By this study, we would like to look at the relevant laws and regulations to see if these ships can be interpreted as sea trial, and suggest the necessity of managing repaired test ships with risks comparable to those of sea trial ships.

  • This paper presents the sea-trial results of Crabster CR6000 which is a deep-sea walking robot developed by KRISO in 2016. Crabster CR6000 is designed to inspect deep-sea environment rejecting the disturbance on the silent and calm abyssal area. The sea-trial was conducted at the East Sea and the Philippine Sea on December 2016. The Crabster CR6000 undocked successfully from the Shuttle after touchdown on the sea-bed and walked out on the soft sediment soil of the 4,743m seafloor at the fourth diving in the Philippine Sea. The advanced technologies and capabilities of CR6000 were verified from the operational and functional test conducted in the sea-trial. The experimental data acquired from the sea-trial were summarized and the first experience of the deep-sea walking robot was presented in this paper.

Study on the Difference of the Maneuvering Characteristics of a VLCC in Standstill from those of her in Running

  • The objective of this paper is to make clear the difference of maneuvering characteristics of a VLCC in standstill from those of her in running. The authors made mathematic models to calculate maneuvering motions of a VLCC in standstill using various ahead engine with full rudder angle and calculated their motions in each case and compared the calculated values with those of the same vessel running in sea trial tests. The difference of motions between them is great. For example, a VLCC in standstill can achieve a great alteration of heading over 90 degrees within the distance of 0.2L advance while she advances 3.0L for 90 degrees turning in full running sea trial turning test. Therefore whenever a VLCC in standstill meets a vessel approaching in collision course situation in near distance, it is better and recommendable that she should use her ahead engine with full rudder to avoid collision. So "maneuvering trial tests in standstill conditions" should be added to the content of sea trial tests when a newly built VLCC commence to take sea trials, that has not been included until now.

Study on the Correction Method of Ice Strength and Thickness Applied to the Sea Trial Condition Based on the Ice Model Test Results (빙두께 및 강도 보정기법을 이용한 모형시험결과의 실선시운전 적용연구)

  • This paper deal with the validation of correction method of ice strength and thickness to the sea trial condition based on the ice model test results. It is very difficult to conduct the model test corresponding to the sea trial condition exactly. In addition, the available sea trial data is not sufficient for the validation of correction method. In the present study, the model test results of Terry-Fox ice breker have been used to compare the corrected results of sea trial test by varying its thickness and strength of model ice. The HSVA and ITTC methods have been applied to the present comparisions and the required power has been also validated by using the HSVA method. There are rather good agreement between the sea trial result and model test corrected by the HSVA and ITTC method. The more comparisons are expected to be carried out in near future.

A Basic Study on Establishment of Sea Trial Prohibition Waterway Based on Marine Traffic Survey (해상교통량 조사 기반 시운전금지해역 설정 기초 연구)

  • Korea has very strong shipbuilding industry in the world, so many new ships are constructed in Korean shipyards. These built vessels are carrying out sea trial at sea before delivering to shipowner, and sea trial ships cause navigation risk to other passing vessels to accomplish sea trial tests as quick turning, zigzag maneuvering and crash astern etc. in traffic congestion conditions. It occurred more than 1 collision accident related sea trial for recent 5 years. It has been increased about 30% of risk because of navigation of sea trial vessel by marine traffic flow simulation. This paper analyzed marine traffic density surveyed by AIS data for 7 days, and investigated position of marine accidents for 5 years in Korean coastal waterway, it established the sea trial prohibition areas as 10/100 level of total marine traffic volume, which is considered no danger for ship operator. This analyzed maritime safety law for setting of the prohibition waters to propose the basic legal system. It makes contribution to marine pollution prevention by setting of the sea trial prohibition water to improve the ship's navigation safety.

  • This paper reports the results of a comparative study on rudder performance between the steel rudders that have been used in coastal angling fishing boats in the 20-GT class and the newly developed FRP composite material rudders. In order to compare the rudder performances of these two types, a sea trial test was carried out to investigate the speed performance, fuel consumption, and ship's turning ability. The results showed that the sea trial performance of the FRP composite rudder was better than that of the steel rudder type in terms of the sea speed, fuel consumption rate, and turning ability.

  • To know the speed performance of "ARAON" in Arctic ice field, the measurement of ice properties which is ice thickness & strength, snow depth and free board were performed on July 2010. The measuring method of nautical signals such as heading angle, power of engine, wind & current information etc. was described in this paper. The speed sea trials in ice were performed on the four different positions with different ice properties and engine powers because the uniform level ice is not detected in the Chukchi Sea. The test field was partially constrained ice floe with hummocks and it was superposed with small broken ice pieces each other. All of the measured ice properties were compared and evaluated according to the results of sea trial. The relations between speed, ice thickness, strength and power were summarized. Consequently according to the sea trial results, the speed of ARAON is 2.78knots at the 2.49m ice thickness with 6.55MW engine power.

  • RIB(Rigid Inflatable Boat) is widely used for coastal transportation in the commercial use and for ISR(Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) in the military use. Since RIB is around 10 meters in length and over 30 knots in speed, its motion characteristics in waves is quite different from a large scale ship. When it turns, large roll occurs and heeling direction is opposite to the large ship's case. Currently, many countries are developing USV(Unmanned Surface Vehicle) of which type is RIB. In order to develop high performance autopilot and way point controller, it is very important to identify RIB's motion characteristics. In this paper, sea trial test results of a 7-meter RIB such as speed, turning, zig-zag, and way point control tests were represented and its resistance and propulsion model was identified by using sea trial data and Savitsky's formula. In addition, the state space model which will be used in the identification of the four-degree-of-freedom dynamics in the next step was formulated and the identification procedure was proposed.

Correction Methods and Validation for Environmental Conditions in the Ice Field Trials (빙해역 시운전 해석을 위한 환경조건 보정 방법 및 검증)

  • Vessel's ice speed performances will be verified in ice sea trial but environmental conditions of ice fields are changeable according to the weather condition of ice trial area. Speed performance has to correct in the no wind, wave and current etc. after sea trial. Especially finding ice fields which is exact the same as owner's ice thickness and strength requirements is not easy. Therefore speed correction according to environment condition has to be done after sea trial measurements. Correction methods for ice thickness, ice strength, wave, wind and ship draft, trim, ice drift etc. are checked in ice sea trial based on literature review such as ISO standard, ITTC recommendation, journal papers and proceedings of conferences. Possibility of application for current and ice drift correction in ice field are discussed and measuring schemes and procedures of correction methods are described in this paper. All of correction schemes are calculated for 'Araon' which is ice breaking research vessel with Arctic and Antarctic ice field test results. Analyzed results shows that Araon is satisfied with her official ice speed performance of 3 knots with 10MW power at 1m ice thickness, 570kPa ice flexural strength.
