  • The real size submersible fish cage($L{\times}B{\times}D$, $3{\times}3{\times}6$m)system consists of the compressed air equipment was made in order to control efficiently in case of heavy weather or environmental pollution such as red tide, and then carried out experiment on the submersible functions and safety for that cage at Koje inland sea in 14th June, 1995. The authors could confirm that the submersible cage was very stabilized it's submersible functions and safety when the cage was floating and sinking at sea.

  • In the field of research of seakeeping quality, much development has been made incent years using the method of calculation based on the strip theory. It is indispensable to grasp quantitatively the seaworthiness of a ship in order to draw correct design at initial stage and to perform proper operations at sea services. In this paper, the responses of three fishing vessels are calculated using statistical and spectral analyzing method to get the characteristics of the motion response. From the theoretical result we know that the significant values of the pitching and rolling motion can be signiicantly affected by not only the ship's tonnage but also the mean wave period in spite of the similar sea environment. So we can apply these expected results to the safe maneuvering and fishing operations in rough weather conditions by combining environmental circumstance with the stability condition of vessels.

An Assessment of Offshore Wind Energy Resources around Korean Peninsula (한반도해역의 해상 풍력 자원 평가)

  • In order to investigate the offshore wind resources around Korean peninsula, the "QuikSCAT Level 3" data by ADEOS II satellite was analyzed from Jan 1 2000 to Jan 18 2003. The "SeaWinds" on the satellite is a specialize4 device for microwave scatterometery that measures near-surface wind speed and direction under all weather and cloud conditions. Wind speed are extrapolated from 10m to 60m with the exponent of 1/10 in the power law model. It has been found that the High wind energy potentials are prevailing in the South sea and Southeastern end of Korean peninsula.

  • The FRP pole had great advantages over other material poles. Light weight, easy installing and transporting were good characteristics. The material's superior properties represented the good durability for sea weather and air pollution, good insulation for electric, and changeable colors. In those properties, usages were like a area affected by sea, downtown, the area among the mountains and a special area for the outstanding views. It was studied that pole manufacturing method, structure analysis of pole by FEM in this study. Filament winding method was selected for a new pole manufacturing method. It produced the tapered poles and mechanically strong properties.

  • Groundwater has been a very precious resource for human life and economic development in the world. With increasing population and food demand, the groundwater use especially for agriculture is largely elevated worldwide. The very much large groundwater use results in depletion of major aquifers, land subsidences in many large cities, anthropogenic groundwater contamination, seawater intrusion in coastal areas and accompanying severe conflicts for water security. Furthermore, with the advent of changing climate, securing freshwater supply including groundwater becomes a pressing and critical issue for sustainable societal development in every country because prediction of precipitation is more difficult, its uneven distribution is aggravating, weather extremes are more frequent, and rising sea level is also threatening the freshwater resource. Under these difficulties, can groundwater be sustaining its role as essential element for human and society in the near future? We have to focus our efforts and wisdom on answering the question. Korean government should increase its investment in securing groundwater resources for changing climate.

  • Application of digital filter to the wave analysis is studied using the observed data by wave gauge. Sea wave data obtained from wave gauge always include long wave frequency components. In order to estimate the sea wave parameters, we must re-analyzed wave data by using a digital filter and the concept of mean sea level correction method. By the wave by wave analysis and spectral methods, sea wave parameters on the basis of wave data obtained by the conventional method and digital filter are compared. The best-fitted design filter determined by the necessary conditions of frequency responses, can be obtained by calculating various transfer functions. Thus, to get the best the digital filter design, both Butterworth filter and Savitzky-Golay filter of digital filter are used in the frequency and time domain, respectively. Three cases of observation wave data are calculated by applying digital filter. The components of different frequency bands in the surf zone are coexisted in three cases. The wave data for wind wave components is computed using the digital filter the surf zone and off-surf zone, and based on the filtered data, wave parameters are calculated by the spectral analysis and wave by wave analysis methods, respectively. As a results, when sea wave data observed by wave gauge are analyzed, the Savitzky-Golay method is recommended which can well appear cut-off frequency by experimental choosing filter length in the time domain. The better mean sea level correction method is the Butterworth filter in the frequency domain.

  • Marine casualities in the high sea are mainly classified into the breakage of hull and capsize , of which the latter occurs frequently to a small craft and container vessels by extreme rolling. The aim of this study is to develop shiphandling techniques for the prevention of ship's large rolling by way of evaluating dangerous degree of rolling in heavy weather. In this study, rolling motion is analized by using statistical method as follow : (1) 8 sample ships is presented for calculation. (2) Analized sea state are Beaufort scale 7 and 10 (wind velocity 30kts and 50kts respectively) and significant wave height is put as 5.2m and 11.2m. (3) The formula recommended by International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC) is used to calculated the wave spectrum. The results of this study are as follow : The results of this study are as follow : (1) Most of the vessels with beam of 20 meters or less was found to be capized in the waves abeam under the sea condition of Bearfort scale7(30kts). (2) For the vessels range 20m to 30m was found safe under the sea conditions of Bearfort scale 7(30kts) and imminent danger under the sea condition of Beaufort scale 11(50kts). (3) It is proved that any vessel could be capsized by heavy rolling regardless of vessel's size whenever the motion is synchronized with waves abeam. This study concludes that the navigator, especially at night , must anticipate the exact wave direction, referring to the wether report and coastaline, not to lay the vessel in the serial wave abeam.

A case study of gust factor characteristics for typhoon Morakat observed by distributed sites

  • Gust factor is an important parameter for the conversion between peak gust wind and mean wind speed used for the structural design and wind-related hazard mitigation. The gust factor of typhoon wind is observed to show a significant dispersion and some differences with large-scale weather systems, e.g., monsoons and extratropical cyclones. In this study, insitu measurement data captured by 13 meteorological towers during a strong typhoon Morakot are collected to investigate the statistical characteristics, height and wind speed dependency of the gust factor. Onshore off-sea and off-land winds are comparatively studied, respectively to characterize the underlying terrain effects on the gust factor. The theoretical method of peak factor based on Gaussian assumption is then introduced to compare the gust factor profiles observed in this study and given in some building codes and standards. The results show that the probability distributions of gust factor for both off-sea winds and off-land winds can be well described using the generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution model. Compared with the off-land winds, the off-sea gust factors are relatively smaller, and the probability distribution is more leptokurtic with longer tails. With the increase of height, especially for off-sea winds, the probability distributions of gust factor are more peaked and right-tailed. The scatters of gust factor decrease with the mean wind speed and height. AS/NZ's suggestions are nearly parallel with the measured gust factor profiles below 80m, while the fitting curve of off-sea data below 120m is more similar to AIJ, ASCE and EU.

  • - We explored the application of VR technologies to implement VR-Based Navigation Simulator Using VRML. - VR Ship Simulator gave some useful functions such as maneuvering ship with ease of learning the International Conventions to Preventing Collisions at sea. - AtoN Simulator can give attractive and interesting experiences with ease of learning the rules of IALA system and ease of comprehension of Aids to Navigation characteristics in various weather conditions - Results from tests, it became apparent that the developed VR-based Navigation Simulator could be adequate to next generation ship simulator.
