The operation of tidal power facility may induce severe changes of water quality in Shihwa Lake. Current water quality data are quite important to water quality management policy of Shihwa Lake. Thus, the water quality data of Shihwa Lake and its adjacent sea in 2010 were presented to characterize the temporal and spatial changes of water parameters such as pH, SS, DO, COD, dissolved nutrients, chlorophyll-a, TN and TP. Highest levels of water quality parameters were observed near the Shihwa and Banweol industrial complexes and the levels of water quality parameters were on a decreasing trend to those near the water gate. It suggests that the horizontal distributions of water quality levels are mainly controlled by the supply of fresh water from streams and the inflow of outer seawater by operation of water gate. Although the higher concentrations of TN and TP were observed in the location being affected by Sorae port, the levels of water quality parameters in outer sea of Shihwa Lake were lower than those in Lake. In summer season, hypoxic condition was well developed in bottom water by strong stratification and active decomposition of organic matter. Thus, the vertical distributions of dissolved nutrient, TN and TP concentrations showed the concentrations to be higher in bottom seawater than those in surface seawater whereas the vertical distributions of chlorophyll-a, COD and POC concentrations showed the concentrations to be higher in surface seawater than those in bottom water. Results of Pearson's correlation matrix for surface seawater demonstrated that salinity showed negatively good correlation with not only dissolved nutrients except for ammonium but chlorophyll-a, COD and POC This result indicates that the supply of dissolved nutrients through several streams might significantly affect phytoplankton bloom and increase of COD concentration in surface seawater.
Calcareous soil is originated from marine biogenic sediments and weathering of carbonate rocks. The formation history for calcareous sediment includes complex physical, biological and chemical processes. It is preferably selected as the major fill materials for hydraulic reclamation and artificial island construction. Calcareous sands possess inter pores and complex shape are liable to be damaged at normal working stress level due to its fragile nature. Thus, the engineering properties of calcareous soil are greatly affected by its high compressibility and crushability. A series of triaxial shear tests were performed on calcareous sands derived from South China Sea under different test conditions. The effects of confining pressure, particle size, grading, compactness, drainage condition, and water content on the total amount of particle breakage for calcareous soil were symmetrically investigated. The test results showed that the crushing extent of calcareous sand with full gradation was smaller than that a single particle group under the same test condition. Large grains are cushioned by surrounding small particles and such micro-structure reduces the probability of breakage for well-graded sands. The increasing tendency of particle crushing for calcareous sand with a rise in confining pressure and compactness is confirmed. It is also evident that a rise in water content enhances the amount of particle breakage for calcareous sand. However, varying tendency of particle breakage with grain size is still controversial and requires further examination.
Most of saline water inousions have been diagnosed by geophysical or geochemical approach independently. The objective of this study is to provide the effective method to detect the saline water intrusion on the ground water in the vicinity of seashore using these two methods. Schulumberger sounding, frequency domain electromagnetic sounding and geochemical analysis of ground water were carried out to explore saline water intrusion. Schulumberger sounding was implemented in dry surface condition before irrigation water was introduced into the field, while electromagnetic sounding was carried out in wet ground condition after the irrigation. The purpose of duplicated measurements on the equivalent spot at different times was to investigate the variation of anomaly zone depending on the amount of ground water. It was possible to discriminate the anomalous zone due to high water saturation from the low electric resistivity zone by high salt concentrations through this way. For the verification of the geophysical result, the ground water samples in the study area were collected and analysed at the 23 points near the measuring spots. The groundwater at the spot nearest to the sea water intrusion identified by geophysical method indicates higher salinity than the standard limit concentration for agricultural irrigation water (250 mg/1). Isotope analysis of $D({^2}H)$ vs. is ${^18}O$ and PCA analysis were used to discriminate the anthropogenic pollution from those of high salinity from sea water intrusion.

Biomass distribution of zooplankton showed its lowest level in June in the Cheju Strait, and the highest one was noticed in November when the secondary productivity is considered high. The highest biomass of zooplankton appeared in the sea areas of Sta. 14 and 11 respectively with relation to oceanographic conditions and wet weight of biomass. The positions were the center part of the Cheju Strait, while the sea area of the South Sea of Korea and the northern coast of Cheju Island showed relatively low biomass distribution. The characteristic of the sea area where biomass was densely distributed was it was in patch shape. Meanwhile, biomass distribution was higher in the northern sea area of Cheju Island than In the coastal sea of the South Sea of Korea. It shows formation of hairtail fishing grounds is closely related to biomass distribution in the Cheju Strait. In addition, high biomass is displayed in the center part of the saddle shaped ocean, a boundary of the heterogeneous water mass as a feature of fall oceanographic condition. Good fishing grounds of a hairtail In the Cheju Strait were formed outside of the sea area that showed patch-shaped high biomass distribution.

The main purpose of ice model basin is to assess and evaluate the performance of the Arctic ships and offshore structures because the full-scale tests in ice covered sea are usually very expensive and difficult. There are various ice conditions, such as level ice, brash ice, pack ice and ice ridge, in the real sea. To estimate their capacities in ice tank accurately, an appropriate model ice sheet and prepared ice conditions copied from actual sea ice conditions are needed. Pack ice is a floating ice that has been driven together into a single mass and a mixture of ice fragments of varying size and age that are squeezed together and cover the sea surface with little or no open water. So Ice-class vessels and Icebreaker are usually operated in pack ice conditions for the long time of her voyage. The most ice model tests include the pack ice test with the change of pack ice concentration. In this paper, the effect of pack ice size and channel breadth in pack ice model test is conducted and analyzed. Also we presented some techniques for the calculation of pack ice concentration in the model test. Finally, we developed a new model test methodology of pack ice condition in square type ice tank.
Multi water-loop system is the efficient customer centered facilities of water supply by utilizing the multi water resources. Multi water-loop system is divided into various types. The system is classified potable and non-potable type. Mostly, the potable type utilizes surface water and ground water. However, the non-potable type utilize the multi water resources, such as rain water, sea water, reclaimed water, etc. Selective intake is possible when characteristics of region, physiographic condition and purpose of use are considered. For instance, downtown type, new-city type, agriculture type, island type are available. For development and application of these multi water-loop system, standardization is needed. For standardization, several methods are given; design principles, selection and composition method of multi water-loop system structure, BIM/GIS application method, safety inspection method. Consequently, a road map of design standardization method can be established. In this road map, there are three parts for the standardization of multi water-loop system. Three parts are the considerations, base material and ways of standardization. Design standardization become close when this road map followed by someone who plan the multi water-loop system. In this way, loop system's development is more efficient and economic. In hereafter research, each type's characteristic will be analysed and standardization methods can be established.

Squid jigging fishery is very important in that there are about 1,000 jigging vessels more than 10 tonnage and about 5,000 ones less than 10 tonnage in Korea. But the cost of oil which is used to light fishing lamps, goes significantly up to almost one hundred million won for 50 tonnage vessels and forty million won in case of vessels less than 10 tonnage. This cost has almost taken 40% of total fishing costs. That is, the fishing business condition of squid jigging fishery is recently in the very difficult situation. As oil price increases, the business condition of the fishery gets worse and worse. Therefore it is very urgent to develop an economical fishing lamp, to solve this problem of fishery's business difficulty. This research aims at developing a fishing lamp for squid jigging fishery using the light emitting diode which has very excellent efficiency and durability. We made a water tank with 20 meters width which is a shape of raceway to research behavioral characteristics of Japanese flying squid to LED light, and made an experiment to investigate optimum wave of LED light to lure squid. The method is to establish LED lamps on both ends of water tank and to observe squid's behavior. Colors and wave lengths of LED lamps, used in experiment, are red(634nm), yellow(596nm), green(523nm), blue(454nm) and white(454nm+560nm). In experiment for attractive capability of LED lamp to squids, Japanese flying squid are highly attracted to blue lamp and white lamp. However, they are dispersed to red and yellow lamps. In addition, Japanese flying squid have moved and stayed in both dark ends of water tank. When compared intermittent lamp with continuous lamp, Japanese flying squid are highly attracted to intermittent lamp when intermittent interval is 0.25 second.
A bentonite mixing with local soil widely used as liner layer for landfill should have low permeability less than $1{\times}10^{-7}cm/s$. But there are several limitations of bentonite used as liner layer, such as drying shrinkage cracking, ineffective waterproof ability under salt water condition like flocculation under sea water. The purpose of this research is the development of a salt resistance bentonite by mixing sepiolite and guar gum to overcome the weak points of bentonite to get high water resistance capacity and permeability coefficient below $1{\times}10^{-7}cm/s$ under salt water condition. After having performed drying shrinkage cracking test, swelling index test, compaction test, and hydraulic conductivity test we confirmed the optimal mixing ratio of materials and evaluated the performance of materials.
This paper attempts to examine the characteristics of underwater acoustic signals distorted in shallow water environments. Time signals are simulated using an acoustic model that employs the Fourier synthesis scheme. An acoustic experiment was conducted in the shallow sea near Pohang, Korea, where water depth is about 60m. The environment in the simulation is set up so that it approximates the experimental condition, which can be regarded as range-independent. The signal is LFM(linar frequency modulated) type centered on one of the four frequencies 200, 400, 600 and 800Hz, each being swept up or down with the bandwidth of 100Hz. To analyze the signal characteristics, the study introduces a spectrum estimation scheme, pseudo Wigner-Ville distribution (PWVD). The simulated and measured signals suffer great interference by the interaction of neighboring rays. Although there are constructive or destructive interference, the signals keep LFM characteristics well. This is thought that only a few dominant rays of small loss contribute to the receive signals in a shallow water environment.
This study is aimed to construct a marine small hydro power plant using discharge water of fish farm in Jeju Haengwon-ri. The difference of design methods between marine small hydro power plant and land small hydro power plant is to consider the tides. Moreover, ground condition should be examined because gushout sea water comes out from the ground at high tide in Jeju as the ground of Jeju beach consists of basalt stone. From the field test of the turbine generator after construction of the power plant, output power and efficiency of the turbine generator shows good conformance to the required conditions.
