The ECOM3D is used to study the circulation characteristics and density current from the Sumjin River runoff in the Kwangyang Estuarine System, South Sea, Korea. Annual mean value of $120m^3/s$ was imposed from the Sumjin River. The numerical model results in terms of tidal height, current and salinity field show satisfactory with skill scores over 90%. The current velocity showed the range of 1~2.5 m/s during flood and ebb phases. In particular, very strong flow occur in the narrow Channels of Noryang, Daebang and Changson exceeding over 2.0 m/s. The tidal residual currents in the various locations in the Kwangyang Estuary showed the range of 1~21 cm/s, The density-driven current through the Yeosu and Noryang Channels are about 12 cm/s and 4 cm/s, respectively. The current path through the Yeosu Channel is deflected toward west Bank. Based on budget analysis of the volume flux, the volume flux through the Yeosu Channel and the Noryang Channel were estimated to be 97.4 and $22.1m^3/s$ accounting for the 81.5% and 18.5% of total flux, respectively.
It is believed that geological survey, drilling and geophysical survey which was carried out on Tertiary deposits in Pohang is a valuable but through the studying of many Tertiary sediments in Japan discovered many questions on analysis of final report prepared by National geological survey. The main reason is: 1. The seismic sound velocity which have regulated in the final report prepared by geological survey for Tertiary deposits in Pohang was 1,500-2,000m/sec in spite of oil bearing sediments of same age in Japan are 2,000-3,800m/sec. These may means the requirement of reconsideration of seismic velocity for Tertiary deposits in Pohang and required to have a dipper drilling. 2. Stratigraphically, geophysically, and paleontologically, the Tertiary deposits in Pahang land area is similar with that of Nishiyama-Hunakawa formations of Akita oil field in Japan. Nishiyama-Hunakawa formation is the main oil bearing formation in Japan. 3. Those valcanic rock including andestitic rock and liparitic rock which have extensively distributed over either at land area or at sea bottom, assumed by geological survey as the base of Tertiary sediments. But in case of Japan many oil bearing deposits are in over laid by these kind of volcanic rock. Therefore a possible of same condition with Japan is presumable on Tertiary sediments in Pohang. 4. It is believed that the Tertiary sediments of land area in Pohang is the extension of offshore basin but is wandering that the final report submitted by geologic survey have not remain any word on report of ECAFE discribed so much problematics as followed: A. Although it was assumed that no great thickness exceeding 1,000 meters, or major structures would be encountered in the Tertiary offshore sequence, it was hoped that shallow hydrocarbon deposits might be found, because these sediment are lithologically similar to those of the same age in the producing area of the northwest Honshu region of Japan where hydrocarbon are extracted from depths of only 500 to 600 meters. B. Four possible hydrocarbon trap conditions are represented in the survey area: anticlinal folds, faults, pinch outs, along the igneous basement and lateral facies changes. C. Most of the prime possible reservoir area are beyond the 50 meter water depth mark, except for the structures in Yonil Bay. D. Despite the shallowness of the offshore basin, sufficient trap condition exist in the area to warrant further exploration for hydrocarbon. 5. All of the problems mentioned above have gave us a strong reasons to have us hesitating to make a final conclusion on Tertiary problems in Pohang, before to have a drill to a depth to 3,000 meters or more whatever it is the Tertiary or a Mesozoics below 1,000 meters.

This study was conducted to investigate the benthic condition around Busan Port by analysing spatio-temporal distribution pattern of polychaete community and some benthic environmental factors. Field survey was seasonally carried out at 15 stations covering in and outside of Busan Port from February to December, 2007. Water temperature, salinity and the type of surface sediment showed little changes among the stations, but factors related to organic enrichment such as TOC, AVS, coprostanol showed an obvious contrast, especially between in and outside of Busan Port. A total of96 species occurred and mean density was 1,814 ind./$m^2$. Species richness was higher at outer port than inner port, but density was higher at inner port. Dominant species were Aphelochaeta monilaris, Magelona japonica, Pseudopolydora paucibranchiata, etc. and many of them were typical species of organically enriched area. From the multivariate analyses, the whole study area was composed of two distinct polychaete communities located at the inside and outside of the port, and seasonal changes didn't have any influential effects on the structure. Coprostanol and AVS, indicators of organically enriched condition, well explained the community structures of polychaete worms in the vicinity of Busan Port. In this context, the innermost area of North Harbor was in a highly enriched state.

The hydro-acoustic technology has been widely used in not only South Korea but also many foreign countries for various scientific purposes. Unfortunately acoustic data especially collected from field surveys may contain noises caused by a variety of sources. Therefore, it is exceedingly important to eliminate noises when acoustic data are analyzed to derive quantitative results. This study introduced two methods for eliminating noises easily and effectively using post-processing software. Used acoustic data were collected on the Jinhae bay and Tongyeong coast of the South Sea in April 2015. The first method, that is the Wang's method, placed emphasis on 'erosion filter' to eliminate only data samples contaminated by noises. The second method (Yamandu's method) focused on the 'resample by number of pings' to remove pings contained noises. To substantiate the effectiveness of two methods, the mean Sv (Volume backscattering strength), mean height and depth of the fish schools detected were compared between before and after using the noise elimination methods. In the Wang's method the mean Sv was decreased from -52.4 dB to -52.9 dB, and in the Yamandu's method from -52.6 dB to -53.3 dB, indicating that noises were successfully eliminated. The mean height (1.5 m) and depth (19.0 m) were same between before and after using two methods showing that the shapes of fish schools were not changed.
In this study, we classify the 1000 hPa geopotential height fields around the Korean peninsula through the Kmeans cluster analysis and investigate the occurrence characteristics of each cluster pattern. The 11 clusters are identified as the typical pressure patterns, applying the pattern correlation as a similarity among clusters and the criterion of cluster similarity 0.8, of which three pressure patterns are associated with the extension of Siberia air mass, other three with the latitudes of the longest symmetry axis of North Pacific highs, two with the trough largely under the air mass of Siberia or North Pacific, and the remaining three, the migratory high patterns generally occurring in spring and autumn, are disjointed according to the direction of the longest symmetry axis of highs. The occurrence rate of air masses affecting the Korean peninsula, estimated from the number of occurrence days of 11 pressure patterns, is 55.4% Siberian, 29.3% North Pacific, 12.8% Yangtze-River, 2.5% Okhotsk sea and 68.2% of all these is the continental air masses. The wintertime pressure patterns around the Korean peninsula are nearly contrary to those in summertime, each dominated by the highs extended from the stationary air masses over the Central Siberia and the North Pacific ocean. The migratory highs occur largely in spring and autumn while transferring from the wintertime patterns to summertime patterns, or vice versa. Recently, the occurrence frequency of the highs extended from the North Pacific is on the decrease and while the wintertime pressure patterns occur frequently in spring and autumn, the occurrence frequency of the pressure patterns with trough is on the increase and the migratory highs occur in nearly all seasons.

Since the estuary is a very complex place in which the sea water and the fresh water meet, it is very difficult to make a general analytical description of salinity distribution in the estuary. As an attempt to investigate the characteristics of salinity variation in the estuary of the Geum River, the field observations were continuously carried out at three points near the Gunsan New Harbor at the time intervals 1 to 1.5 hours during one tidal cycle and the data were analysed. The following results were obtained; 1. It was reconfirmed that most of the ratios of the salinity to the conductivity were widely distributed between the range of 0.5 to 1.0. 2. The salinity showed the peak at the high water, and then it began to decrease gradually and had the lowest value 0 to 2 hours after the low water. 3. The density current was generally the intense mixing type and when the river discharge was very large it was of the moderate type. 4. The vertical salinity distribution was not significantly affected by the wave height. 5. The maximum vertical salinity differences were generally less than 10 g/l and the time of the occurrence of the minimum value was 0 to 3 hours after the low water when in the spring tide and in the neap tide it occurred 2 to 3 hours after the high water.
Mass mortality of Halocynthia roretzi has been occurred in culturing grounds of southern coast of Korea during the long period of summer drought and the unusal high water temperature in 1988. Especially Halocynthia roretzi was damaged severely in 2 years group. Therefore we verified these phenomena by observing the environmental factors of culturing grounds and by evaluating oxygen consumption rate in indoor experiment. In culturing grounds, the mortality rate was high in Namhae Mizo area where water temperature was the highest and the lowest in dissolved oxygen concentration as low as 3.76m/l in field observation. In indoor experiment, the higher the water temperature, the more mortality was occurred and the salinity above 30 had no effect on its mortality. In oxygen consumption rate experiment, the smaller needs more oxygen than larger one, i. e., oxygen demand per unit weight was higher in 2 years group than that of 3 years. The theoretical and the actual minimum oxygen demands(MOB) for preventing asphixation was 3.7ml/kg/h at $20^{\circ}C$ and 6.3ml/kg/h gat $25^{\circ}C$, But actual MOD was 4.3ml/kg/h at $25^{\circ}C$ in indoor experiment. It seemed that mass mortality of Halocynthia roretzi in summer was caused by metabolism disorder due to insufficient oxygen level influenced by the high water temperature and the high density of Halocynthia roretzi, which results in the paucity of oxygen especially in 2 years groups.

Due to the growth of population and industrial development at the coastal cities, there has been much increase in necessity to effective control of the wastes into the coastal water and river. The amount of disposal at those waters has been increased rapidly and it is necessary for us to track of it in order to keep the water clean. The investigation and research related to the water quality in this region have been conducted continuously but the systematic survey of the disposed wastes at the bottom was neglected and/or minor. In this study we surveyed the status of disposed waste distribution at the bottom coastal water and river from the scanned images. The intensity of sound received by the side scan sonar tow vehicle from the sea floor provides information as to the general distribution and characteristics of the superficial wastes. The port and starboard side scanned images produced from a transducer borne on a tow fish connected by tow cable to a tug boat have the area with width of 22m∼112m, and band of 44m∼224m. All data are displayed in real-time on a high-resolution color display (1280 ${\times}$ 1024 pixels) together with position information by DGPS. From the field measurement and analysis of the recorded images, we could draw the location and distribution of bottom disposals. Furthermore, we made a database system which might be fundamental for planning the waste reception and process control system.
