Scour protection methods can be categorized as two types: The first is to reduce the horseshoe and wake vortices which are the main reasons for local scour. Either small cylindrical structures or separated vertical deflectors can be placed in front of the pier or the horizontal deflector (or collar) can be attached to the pier like the spoiler to reduce the dynamics of vortical structures. The second is to employ the protection layer to keep the bed material in place, which is a common method with a merit of immediate effect by using block mat or tetrapod. This study examined the effect of scour reduction using the former method. The relationship between the reflector interval and reduction of scour was not clear. It is assumed that the width of the reflector is somewhat correlated with the reduction of the scour. As the KC numbers increases, the Effect of Scour reduction rate is shown to decrease. Also, Scour reduction rate showed a rapid change at $U_R=25$ or KC = 8.

Where hydraulic structures are to be installed over the entire width of a river or stream, usually a bed protection structure is to be installed. However, a local scour occurs in which the river bed downstream of the river protection system is eroded due to the influence of the upstream flow characteristics. This local scour is dominant in the flow and turbulence characteristics at the boundary of the flow direction and in the material of the bed materials, and may gradually become dangerous over time. Therefore, in this study, we compared the turbulence patterns in the local scour hole at the downstream of the river bed protection with the results of the analysis of the mobile bed experiment, and compared with the application of OpenFoam, a three dimensional numerical analysis model. The distribution of depth-averaged relative turbulence intensities along the flow direction was analyzed. In addition to this result, the stabilization of scour hole was compared with the bed shear stress and Shields parameter, and the results were compared by changing the initial turbulent flow conditions. From the results, it was confirmed that the maximum depth of generation of the three-stage was dominantly developed by the magnitude of depth-averaged relative turbulence intensity rather than the mean flow velocity. This result also suggests that design, construction or gate control are needed to control the depth-averaged relative turbulence intensities in order to reduce or prevent the local scour faults that may occur in the downstream part of the bed protection.
Laboratory flume experiments to investigate the characteristics of the flows and local scour around circular bridge pier in a curved channel are performed. In this study, the effect of a circular collar device for controlling the depth of scour is examined. The scour depth with a collar is about 40% of the scour depth without collar in the straight course of the flume while it is about 44% of the scour depth without collar at the location of 150' in the curved channel. As the results of experiments using the collar of which diameter is twice of pier, the reduction of scour depth is the most effective in a straight channel when the location of collar is 0.2h( h:depth) below the channel bottom. And, the reduction of scour depth is the most effective in a curved channel when the location of collar is 0.1h below the channel bottom.

Drop structures that span the entire width of channels are installed to alleviate channel grades and have been constructed widely in Korean rivers. Aprons are normally installed and integrated with drop structures and bed protections are added on the downstream part of aprons to protect both drop structures and aprons. Scour occurring on aprons is reported to provide various habitats such as ripples and pools in natural rivers. This study focuses on the scour characteristics on an apron integrated with a drop structure and the subsidence of a riprap protection. The scour depth on the downstream part of the drop structure is found to increase with the increase of unit discharge; however, to decrease as the tail water depth gets deeper. Based on the experimental measurements, the subsidence of the riprap scour protection is calculated with respect to the thickness of riprap. Finally, the dimensionless empirical equation to quantify the subsidence of the riprap scour protection without filters at downstream of the vertical drop is suggested.

Scour plays a principal role in maintaining stability and durability of bridges. Especially, in case of severe flood events, flow rate getting increase in a short time, scour can impede the functioning of bridges to the extent that they must be taken out of operation, and even can imperil their stability and structural integrity. In Korea, about 100 bridges were collapsed or damaged every you. Sufficient field investigation, however, was not made and, therefore, no adequate countermeasure for scouring is available. In this study, literature on scour-protection methods are reviewed and data on countermeasures of scouring which were collected through field investigation in central region of Korea are analyzed.

The objectives of this study were to analyzes temporal variation of local scour depth in the downstream of weir with shapes. Prediction of maximum or equilibrium scour depth was the main focus of engineers and researchers in the downstream of weir. However, it is necessary to analyzes temporal variation of local scour depth in the downstream of weir to predict real time scour depth. Experiment were performed with various weir shapes like sharp crest and inclined stepped with time variation and non-dimensional scourhole shapes, scour depths were proposed. A formula for predicting scour depths with temporal variation for weir were proposed through non-linear regression analysis. Temporal variation of scour depths could be estimated with suggested formula and 4 input data (Equilibrium scour depth, weir height, overflow depths, and water depth downstream). Suggested formula could make it possible to design a apron and bed protection economically in the downstream of a weir by considering flood duration time.
Experimental studies were conducted in a clear water condition to investigate the functioning of a sack gabion as a scour countermeasure at bridge piers. For different sizes of fill materials of sack gabions no difference was observed in the initial movement of sack gabions. Significant factors on the dislodging of sack gabions are approaching flow depth and velocity, pier width, and thickness and length of sack gabions. It was observed that the stability of the sack gabions is increased in a collective body of riprap stones than the placement of individual riprap stone. The length of a sack gabion has significant effect on its initial movement and the stability of a sack gabion was found to be increased by lengthening the length of gabions. The experimental results were used to derive formulas sizing gabions for scour protection at bridge piers. piers.
Recently in Korea, a marine ranching project has continued to grow with the increasing needs of sea development. Management techniques, including settlement reduction and scour protection, have been required for constructing and maintaining the artificial reefs of this marine ranching project. The generation of settlement and scour can be influenced by ground characteristics. In this study, various laboratory tests (penetration test, two-dimensional water tank test) were performed to determine the settlement and scour characteristics of artificial reefs under various ground conditions. Three kinds of ground reinforcement were prepared: unreinforced, geogrid, and hybrid bamboo mat. Penetration test results showed that the normalized settlement ratio of ground reinforced with a hybrid bamboo mat was smaller than those of unreinforced ground and geogrid-reinforced ground. Two-dimensional water tank test results showed that the scour characteristics of ground reinforced with a geogrid were more reduced and stable than unreinforced ground. The amount of scour and ground settlement also decreased with increasing reinforced area.
Scour characteristics of noncohesive bed materials at the downstream of free-falling jet were analyzed through hydraulic experiments. It was assumed that the downstream had no special energy dissipators. Flow characteristics of free falling jet from rectangular section were studied, and scour characteristics with and without mounds, which were generated at the downstream of the scour hole, were comparatively analyzed for various bed materials, discharges and tailwater depths. Not only the equilibrium scour depth but also the height of mound could be expressed as a function of densimetric Froude number. Densimetric Froude number had closer relationship with the equilibrium dimensionless scour depth than other dimensionless parameters. It was suggested that the mound effects should be considered at the design stage of bed protection works.
Many countermeasures for local scour at bridge piers constructed on the river and sea have been developed and researched to protect piers against local scour. The most commonly employed method is riprap protection, which is sometimes required the filter installation between riprap and base layers. However, the construction of stone filters are really hard to perform in the field, require the high cost, or sometimes are impossible. The experimental modeling is conducted to analyze the riprap failure modes and the stability of riprap protection without filters based on the different approach velocity and riprap layer thickness conditions. Also, the stability index to evaluate the performance of riprap protection is developed using the experimental results. The cover and thickness of the riprap layer play a very important role in the stability and thicker riprap layers can prevent a total disintegration of the riprap layer effectively, especially due to winnowing failure.
