A new method called SRICOS is proposed to predict the scour depth z versus time t around a cylindrical bridge pier of diameter D founded in clay. The steps involved are ; 1. taking samples at the bridge pier site, 2. testing them in an Erosion Function Apparatus called the EFA to obtain the scour rate z versus the hydraulic shear stress applied $\tau$, 3. predicting the maximum shear stress r max which will be induced around the pier by the water flowing at ν Ο before the scour hole starts to develop, 4. using the measured z versus r curve to obtain the initial scour rate zi corresponding to r max , 5. predicting the maximum depth of scour zmax for the pier, 6. using zi and zmarx to develop the hyperbolic function describing the scour depth z versus time t curve, and 7. reading the z vs. t curve at a time corresponding to the duration of the flood to find the scour depth which will develop around the pier. A new apparatus is developed to measure the z vs t curve of step 2, a series of advanced numerical simulations are performed to develop an equation for the $\tau$ max value of step 3, and a series of flume tests are performed to develop an equation for the zmax value of step 5. The method is evaluated by comparing predictions and measurements in 42 flume experiments.

Since the 1960s, traffic infrastructure, such as bridges, has increased rapidly in Korea as urbanization and industrialization progressed due to economic growth. As the scale of the bridge becomes larger, stability analysis of the superstructure of the bridge is being conducted actively, but scour stability analysis for the substructure of the bridge has not been conducted sufficiently. This study is a basic investigation to prevent large-scale disasters caused by scouring in bridge piers. A simple linear regression model was used to analyze the scour depth calculated through seventeen scour depth calculation formulae, and the scour depth measured through hydraulic model experiments. As a result, the Coleman (1971) formula was the best method among the scour depth calculation formulae, and the Froehlich (1987) formula was the most effective method for calculating the scour depth. In addition, a review using a simple regression model confirmed that the scour depth calculation formulae of CSU (1993), Coleman (1971), and Froehlich (1987) can predict a similar scour depth by reflecting domestic stream characteristics. This study can calculate the scour depth reflecting the environmental conditions of Korea in future stream design.

In this research, the reasonable local scour estimates considered conditions of the bed material and the flow was accomplished on two piers P14 and P17 of Il-san bridge. Especially, the Il-san bridge was located on the lower Han-river where is influenced by the tides of In-chon, and it has hydraulic condition that can cause the bridge piers local scour because of tides at ordinary times, as well as a flood. Therefore, the local scour depth has been presented influenced by the maximum velocity of the flow when a flood after construction and the tides on construction on the basis of the standards of river design and road design, furthermore, the results was made a comparative analysis. According to the results, the local scour depth on the basis of the standards of river design was higher than it on the basis of the standards of road design(SRICOS), and the local scour depth influenced by the maximum velocity of the flow when a flood after construction was determined the final local scour depth of P14 and P17 at the Il-san bridge. It was ascertained that the local scour depth did not exceed the inserted depth of bridge foundation.
Recent internal and external bridge failures due to pier and abutment scour have emphasized the need for better methods of scour depth estimation. This paper compares the hydraulic analysis of the Namhan River Bridge over the Namhan River using one-dimensional models. WSPRO & HEC-2, and the two-dimensional model. TABS-MD based on the procedures presented in HEC-18 published by the U.S. FEdral Highway Administration. A comparison of estimated scour depth for this research based on the results from both one-dimensional and two-dimensional model is presented. At the same time, field measurement has been performed before and after flood using sounding instrument. Fathometer (DE-719C). A comparison between estimated and measured scour depth at bridge is also presented. Result shows that there is all the difference between estimated and measured scour depth due to dissimilarity between laboratory and field conditions. Also, it is difficult to measure the maximum scour depth accurately due to refilling. Therefore development of scour measuring equipment which can be used during peak flood, and derivation of empirical model appropriate for internal river system seems urgent.
Laboratory flume experiments to investigate the characteristics of the flows and local scour around circular bridge pier in a curved channel are performed. In this study, the effect of a circular collar device for controlling the depth of scour is examined. The scour depth with a collar is about 40% of the scour depth without collar in the straight course of the flume while it is about 44% of the scour depth without collar at the location of 150' in the curved channel. As the results of experiments using the collar of which diameter is twice of pier, the reduction of scour depth is the most effective in a straight channel when the location of collar is 0.2h( h:depth) below the channel bottom. And, the reduction of scour depth is the most effective in a curved channel when the location of collar is 0.1h below the channel bottom.
Currently, we only estimate the average flood water level by the cross-sections of the river using one-dimensional numerical analysis when establishing the basic plans. However, the reliability decreases when it comes to the river bend. In river bend, the difference of water-level between the inside and the outside of the river arises by centrifugal force. And it is estimated less than what it could be estimated when establishing the plan with average estimate of flood level. It is apprehended that the exterior of the river will be under-constructed when establishing the scour depth only with the mean depth. In the case of local scour of the abutment, it is difficult to estimate its depth precisely, and it tends to be over-estimated in the case of the empirical formulas. Therefore, the modification considering the deviation of the water depth of the exterior of the river bend is needed. In observing the deviation of each formula in river bend, it is found: Andru's formula for 58%, followed by the Laursen's for 26%, and the C.S.U's for 17% in pier, while it is 44% for Froehlich's formula in abutment. Under the 500CMS of the flood discharge, the deviation of the scour depth between pier and abutment was about 10 %. However, in further flood discharge, it shows 24~58% the biggest in deviation of piers. It is concluded that the scour depth estimate should be done with 2-dimensional numerical analysis.

Bridge piers are sometimes damaged by local scour. Although the problem of local scour around pier has been studied extensively, it has been difficult to estimate local scour deth quantitatively. This study is concerned with local scour around semicylindrical piers arranged in various types under the condition of clear water scour. Through dimensional analysis, it was found that scour depths were relative to Re, Fr, and Ns. In the case of semicylindrical piers, the variation of dimensionless scour depth with dimensionless time (effect of Ns, pier diameter and length, incidence angle) and the variation of scour depth with vortex intensity and resistance are investigated experimentally to obtain a formula. And forula for estimating the maximum depth of scour is obtained.
This study presents scour processes and its characteristics around the pile groups using the large eddy simulation (LES) coupled with sediment transport and morphodynamic models. The scour and deposition around pile groups were significantly influenced by the pile interval. In case the non-dimensional pile interval was less than 3.75, the local scours as well as the contraction scour were observed around the pile group. On the other hand, in case the non-dimensional pile interval was more than 3.75, the contraction scour disappeared and only local scours were developed at individual piles. Change in the scour depth at piles located in the upstream was similar with the case of single pile, but the scour depth around piles located in the downstream was lower and showed a significantly different tendency due to the presence of piles in the upstream. The non-dimensional maximum scour depth around the pile group decreased as the pile interval increased.
The laboratory datas are for local scour depth measurement at vertical-wall abutment. These include the data to demonstrate the effects of local scour depth of abutment nose shape, alignment angle, flow depth and flume slope. The pattern of local scour were measured and analyzed the abutments which are rectangular, sharp, chamfered rectangular and ablong nose shapes. The experiments were carried out with varing the flume slope and alignment algle increasing flow depth every step in 1cm for four abutment types on the live-bed scour conditions. The flume slope and alignment angle were varied in five cases : for latter 30 $^{\circ}$, 60 $^{\circ}$, 90 $^{\circ}$, 120 $^{\circ}$ and 150 $^{\circ}$, for former 0.01%, 0.03%, 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.2%. The maximum scour depths were analyzed for the shaped of abutment nose with rectangular, ablong, chamfered rectangular and sharp in order. The results of the experiments show that the scour depth varies not only with abutment nose shapes and alignment angle but also with the flow depth and flume slope.

Scour is one of the leading causes of overwater bridge failures worldwide. While monitoring systems have already been implemented or are still being developed, they suffer from limitations such as high costs, inaccuracies, and low reliability, among others. Also, most sensors only measure scour depth at one location and near the pier. Thus, the objective is to design a simple, low cost, scour hole topography monitoring system that could better characterize the entire depth, shape, and size of bridge scour holes. The design is based on burying a robust, waterproofed, piezoelectric sensor strip in the streambed. When scour erodes sediments to expose the sensor, flowing water excites it to cause the generation of time-varying voltage signals. An algorithm then takes the time-domain data and maps it to the frequency-domain for identifying the sensor's resonant frequency, which is used for calculating the exposed sensor length or scour depth. Here, three different sets of tests were conducted to validate this new technique. First, a single sensor was tested in ambient air, and its exposed length was varied. Upon verifying the sensing concept, a waterproofed prototype was buried in soil and tested in a tank filled with water. Sensor performance was characterized as soil was manually eroded away, which simulated various scour depths. The results confirmed that sensor resonant frequencies decreased with increasing scour depths. Finally, a network of 11 sensors was configured to form a distributed monitoring system in the lab. Their exposed lengths were adjusted to simulate scour hole formation and evolution. Results showed promise that the proposed sensing system could be scaled up and used for bridge scour topography monitoring.
