A Study on the Scientific Status of MIS (경영정보학의 학문적 위상에 관한 연구)

  • The inability of the management information systems (MIS) field to progress as a scientific discipline has been attributed to the lack of systematic research and a cumulative tradition, an identity crisis, and the poverty of scientism. While research on the status of MIS is very important in order to enhance the field as a scientific discipline, few have investigated this issue. Following Thomas Kuhn's idea of paradigm, this paper studies other fields to investigate when they progressed, when they did not, and why. After research paradigm was broken down into technology-push and demand-pull types, a model on the science life cycle was developed in an effort to explain the path how a science has progressed. A test of this model in the fields of physics and chemistry with an old historial background reveals that the scientific progress in the area of demand-pull is more desirable if this progress turns out to be in the right direction. An application of the model to the MIS field shows that the research paradigm in this field is mainly of technology-push. In order to shift this paradigm toward the demand-pull area, this paper suggests the research on the relationship among MIS subfields and the adoption of appropriate reference disciplines.

Response prediction of laced steel-concrete composite beams using machine learning algorithms

  • This paper demonstrates the potential application of machine learning algorithms for approximate prediction of the load and deflection capacities of the novel type of Laced Steel Concrete-Composite (LSCC) beams proposed by Anandavalli et al. (Engineering Structures 2012). Initially, global and local responses measured on LSCC beam specimen in an experiment are used to validate nonlinear FE model of the LSCC beams. The data for the machine learning algorithms is then generated using validated FE model for a range of values of the identified sensitive parameters. The performance of four well-known machine learning algorithms, viz., Support Vector Regression (SVR), Minimax Probability Machine Regression (MPMR), Relevance Vector Machine (RVM) and Multigene Genetic Programing (MGGP) for the approximate estimation of the load and deflection capacities are compared in terms of well-defined error indices. Through relative comparison of the estimated values, it is demonstrated that the algorithms explored in the present study provide a good alternative to expensive experimental testing and sophisticated numerical simulation of the response of LSCC beams. The load carrying and displacement capacity of the LSCC was predicted well by MGGP and MPMR, respectively.

Facile Electrodeposition Technique for the Fabrication of MoP Cathode for Supercapacitor Application

  • The continued environmental pollution caused by fossil fuel consumption has prompted researchers around the world to develop environmentally friendly energy technologies. Electrochemical energy storage is the significant area of research in this development process, and the research significance of supercapacitors in this field is increasing. Herein, a simple electrodeposition synthetic route was explored to develop the MoP layered cathode material. The layered structure provided a highly ion-accessible surface for smooth and faster ion adsorption/desorption. After Fe was doped into MoP, the morphology of MoP changes and the electrochemical performance was significantly improved. Specific capacitance value of the binder-free FeMoP electrode was found to be 269 F g-1 at 2 A g-1 current density in 6 M aqueous KOH electrolyte. After adding Fe to MoP, an additional redox contribution was observed in the redox conversion from Fe3+ to Fe2+ redox pair, and the charge transfer kinetics of MoP was effectively improved. This research can provide guidance for the development of supercapacitor electrode materials through simple electrodeposition technology.

Development and Application of Tool for Measuring High School Students' Scientific Experience (고등학생의 과학 경험 측정을 위한 도구의 개발 및 적용)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a measurement tool quantifying the degree of high school students' scientific experience. Based on previous studies, we divided the factors that compose school scientific experience into three categories: general activity experience, scientific inquiry experience and laboratory apparatus experience. While, outside of school scientific experience was divided into general activity experience, interesting activity experience and field trip experience. Items consisting each factor were selected from scientific experience measurement tools used in previous researches, most frequent answers showed in open questionnaire about scientific experiences, and exploratory analysis of textbooks. After the measurement tool developed by pilot-questionnaires and previous researches were preliminary tested and then was secondarily tested for a group of 413 high school students. The content validity and construct validity of the measurement tool was evaluated by two school teachers and two experts in science education and by factor analysis, respectively. The reliability of the tool was estimated with Cronbach Alpha. The results of validity and reliability revealed that the tool was appropriate for measuring scientific experience.

  • The purpose of this paper is to establish the category of SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) systems, technologies and application fields, thus to provide the world-wide trend in SAR research and development activities by analysing SAR-related journal papers. This paper presents an analysis result of SAR-related journal papers published from the late 1960s to early 2005. Abstracts and indices of 2665 peer-reviewed, English journal papers published in 243 journals were collected from the Cambridge Scientific Abstracts and classified into the categories according to the system, technique, and application field. Statistics on each category were provided so that one can understand the historical and on-going development in SAR systems, techniques, and a variety of application fields such as land, ocean, cryosphere and atmosphere. This statistical analysis data would be a valuable guideline to establish a future SAR system application and satellite manoeuvering policy in Korea.

  • There is a growing need for ad-hoc analysis of extremely large data sets, especially at e-Commerce companies which depend on recommender application. Nowadays, as the number of e-Commerce web pages grow to a tremendous proportion; vertical recommender services can help customers to find what they need. Recommender application is one of the reasons for e-Commerce success in today's world. Compared with general e-Commerce recommender application, obviously, general e-Commerce recommender application's processing scope is greatly narrowed down. MapReduce is emerging as an important programming model for large-scale data-parallel applications such as web indexing, data mining, and scientific simulation. The objective of this paper is to explore MapReduce framework for the e-Commerce recommender application on major general and dedicated link analysis for e-Commerce recommender application, and thus the responding time has been decreased and the recommender application's accuracy has been improved.

An Analysis of Learning Objectives of Biology Contents in SATIS 14-16 (SATIS 14-16 생물영역 단원의 학습목표 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze learning objectives of biology contents in SATIS 14-16. Modified the 5th NAEP three dimentional science assessment framework was used to analyze learning objectives of SATIS 14-16. This study will be a basic data for the development of STS programs in KOREA. The following results were obtained. 1. In a content dimension, 'structures and functions of organism'(63.9%) was the most frequently found, followed by 'the nature and our Iives'(22.1%), 'a continuity of Iife'(9.4%) and 'our surrounding Iives'(4.7%). 2. In a cognitive dimension, an understanding of scientific knowledge(32.7%) was the most frequently found, followed by an improvement of inquiry ability(25.6%), attitude(24.7%), and scientific knowledge and its application(17.0%). 3. In a context dimension, a personal context(32.8%) was the most frequently found, followed by a social context(27.3%), a scientific context(20.0%) and a technological context(20.0%). 4. There were some differences in behavior when each content was compared. In 'surrounding lives' and 'a continuity of life', an understanding of scientific knowledge was the most frequently found. In 'structures and functions of organism' and 'the nature and our lives', proportions of four behavioral catagories were relatively even. 5. There were some differences in context when each content was compared. In 'surrounding lives', scientific context was the most frequently found, whereas in 'structures and functions of lives', individual context was found the most frequently. In 'a continuity of life', scientific and social context were found more frequently than others. In 'the nature and our lives', social context was the most frequent one.

A 'Mode 3' Science Policy Framework for South Korea - Toward a Responsible Innovation System

  • This article advocates for a Mode 3 science policy. Compared to the university research-based Mode 1 knowledge production system and the knowledge application-centric Mode 2 innovation system, Mode 3 can be defined as a system that integrates both Mode 1 and Mode 2-type knowledge production models. In this article, based on the major characteristics of the Mode 3 scientific knowledge production system, I agree with the advocates of Mode 3 that constructing a knowledge society requires an inclusive form of knowledge production and innovation system through the democratization of knowledge production as well as the promotion of social values. Moreover, the mechanisms for creating accountable innovation in the Mode 3 system should be given more attention from the science research and policy communities to make public policy for scientific and technological innovation more reflective of social changes. Similar to the ways that the Mode 1 and Mode 2 scientific knowledge production approaches have influenced the development of science policy models, the Mode 3 scientific knowledge production approach, or Mode 3 science, also has the potential to shape a new science policy model. I will refer to this as Mode 3 science policy. In an effort to conceptualize the democracy- and society-centric Mode 3 science policy model, I will articulate science policy strategies in four science policy domains in South Korea from the context of the Mode 3 science approach. These include (1) evaluation of publicly-funded research activities, (2) valorization of scientific knowledge (that is, enhancement of the value of scientific knowledge through governmental action), (3) development of a science policy decision-making support system, and (4) anticipatory foresight of science, technology and society. When adopting and implementing a Mode 3 science framework, one progressive change is to increase socially desirable innovation such as responsible innovation.

  • The relevance of the research involves outlining the need for modern professionals to acquire new competencies. In the conditions of rapid civilizational progress, in order to meet the requirements of the labor market in the knowledge society, there is a readiness for continuous training as an indicator of professional success. The purpose of the research is to identify the impact of various forms of application of information technologies for lifelong learning in order to provide the continuous self-development of each person without cultural or age restrictions and on the basis of rapid digital progress. A high level (96%) of need of the adult population in continuing education with the use of digital technologies has been established. The most effective ways to implement the concept of "lifelong learning" have been identified (educational camps, lifelong learning, mass open online courses, Makerspace activities, portfolio use, use of emoji, casual game, scientific research with iVR game, implementation of digital games, work in scientific cafes). 2 basic objectives of continuing professional education for adults have been outlined (continuous improvement of qualifications and obtaining new qualifications). The features of ICT application in adult education have been investigated by using the following methods, namely: flexibility in terms of easy access to ideas, solving various problems, orientation approach, functional learning, group or individual learning, integration of leisure, personal and professional activities, gamification. The advantages of application of information technologies for continuous education (economic, time, and adaptive) have been revealed. The concept of continuous adult learning in the context of digitalization has been concluded. The research provides a description of the structural principles of the concept of additional education; a system of information requests of the applicant, as well as basic technologies for lifelong learning. The research indicates the lack of comprehensive research in the relevant field. The practical significance of the research results lies in the possibility of using the obtained results for a wider acquaintance of the adult population with the importance of the application of lifelong learning for professional activities and the introduction of methods for its implementation in the educational policy of the state.

  • Virtually every state in US has adopted laws and regulations that mandate the generic substitution of brand-named prescription drugs in order to reduce sky-rocketing drug costs. In the late 1970s, many state governments began to recognize the need of generic substitution and requested Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to consult with this issue. FDA did consult which drugs were interchangeable each other based upon the available scientific and experimental evidences given to the agency along with New Drug Application (NDA) and Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA).
