The purposes of this study were to analyze instructional strategies of science teachers, science teachers' orientations toward science teaching by the reason which instructional strategies was used in middle school science classes, and the relations among PCK elements for suggesting a direction of improvement of PKC models. For this purpose, we selected three of middle school teachers as participants who had various teaching experience periods. Semi-structured interviews and classroom observations were gathered for data. From the data collected, we analyzed the type of instructional strategies of science teachers. On the base of these, we identified characteristics of the teachers' orientations toward teaching science. From the reason that instructional strategies was used, we could ascertain that knowledge of science curriculum and knowledge of students' learning which was component of PCK crucially affected instructional strategies of science teachers. Therefore we assured that analysis of practical instructional strategies of science teachers that showed through science instruction was the most effective method that could find out science teacher's orientation of teaching science internalized, and that knowledge of science curriculum and knowledge of students' learning was the basic component of PCK that formed instructional strategies of science teachers. On the basis of the result, a necessity for improvement of PCK models was presented.

This study examined pre-service secondary physics teachers' epistemological beliefs about scientific knowledge, science learning, and science teaching in two different science content topics, Lamarckism and the impetus theory. Two sets of open-ended questionnaires, for each of the topics respectively, were developed in the same format. The pre-service teachers completed the questionnaires at one month intervals. The beliefs were analyzed in two dimensions, knowledge justification and knowledge change for each belief area. The findings show that the majority of pre-service teachers held sophisticated epistemological beliefs about scientific knowledge regardless of content topics. On the other hand, more pre-service teachers exhibited sophisticated beliefs about science learning in the context impetus theory than Lamarckism. In the area of science teaching, the majority of pre-service teachers demonstrated a sophisticated view in knowledge justification but a naive view in knowledge change. When consistency across science topics and belief areas were examined, few pre-service teachers held consistent epistemological beliefs across all topics and areas. The difference in the levels of sophistication in belief areas showed that the pre-service teachers did not connect their epistemological beliefs about science knowledge to their ideas about science teaching and learning. This disconnection seems to make the consistency across topics and areas complicated. The difference in epistemological beliefs about science learning and teaching between two science topics need further inquiry. Implications for teacher education are offered.

The purpose of the study is to explore the personal experiences and efforts of science teachers, who have worked in science core schools over the years, in order to evaluate the educational effects and implications of science core school policies. To achieve this purpose, we conducted semi-structured interviews with twelve individual science teachers who have operated programs and curriculum at science core schools. The results provided three case studies presenting how the teachers operated curriculum and how they perceived the benefits of science core schools and identified some commonalities in their experiences and perceptions through cross-case discussions. Three teachers in case studies presented different teaching orientations for science core schools, but they positively perceived its benefits and were very satisfied with the school environment and financial supports from government even though they had more burdens on work. In cross-case analysis among 12 teachers, the teachers commonly presented their passion and enthusiasm for organizing and implementing various extra-curriculum science activities. They believed that such efforts contributed to encouraging their students to consider their careers in science and engineering fields in college. And the differentiated school program has increased reputation and preference for the school from local parents and students. In addition, they felt that these efforts brought their own growth and professional development as science teachers.

In this study, we investigated secondary science teachers' internalization of constructivistic science teaching who participated in a collaborative program between teachers and researchers designed by researchers according to constructivist views. The program consisted of lecture, workshop, and small group activities. New trends in science education and framework for science teaching were introduced during lectures, and understanding about the framework were deepened by analyzing school science classes recorded during workshops. In small group activities, participating teachers and researchers cooperated to design science lesson plans using science teaching frameworks. Five secondary science teachers participated in collaborative workshops. Collaborative programs were video-taped. Semi-structured interviews were conducted before and after workshops. All data recorded were transcribed and analyzed. In the process of internalization, participating teachers attended on different parts. Various and discernable factors such as there own background, beliefs, values, and school context produced tensions with or facilitated internalization of constructivistic science teaching. Teaching experiences and student understanding affected teachers' lesson planning activities. Teachers also showed different understandings on inquiry, application, and model from the framework, and they interpret those concepts in the framework based on their prior understanding. They perceived that too much content should be dealt within relatively limited time. Therefore, they tended to separate science class into two parts when developing science lessons: explaining science content by lecture and science laboratory as a constructivistic activity. The results of the study provide meaningful implications to the constructivist teacher education and professional development.

The study deals with the problem of the formation of pre-service teachers' reflective skills in information environment. The role of reflection as a mechanism of formation of a modern teacher's self-consciousness was cleared up. The technology of formation of pre-service teachers' reflective skills was characterized and tested. The main stages of the technology were: a motivational and cognitive stage, a problematic and practical stage, and a reflective and operational stage. The substantiated pedagogical conditions of formation of pre-service teachers' reflective skills were adhered. The criterial and evaluative characteristics of the formation of pre-service teachers' reflective skills were worked out: components (reflection of personal conformity, reflection of the psychological and pedagogical barriers, reflection of professional growth); criteria (criterion of consistency, criterion of difficulty, criterion of potential); indicators (cognitive-evaluative, value-motivational, activity-creative). The levels of formation of pre-service teachers' reflective skills (insufficient level, acceptable level, and optimum level) were determined. The analysis of students' surveys showed the effectiveness and expediency of using the technology of formation of pre-service teachers' reflective skills in the process of professional training.
This study investigated the university proffssors', pre-service teachers' and in-service teachers' perceptions of the specialized science education courses in the 11 national universities of education in Korea, analyzed their perception differences, and made suggestions the future directions for the specialized courses. For this study, 46 university professors, 402 in-service teachers, and 336 pre-service teachers were participated nationwide. The results show that there were significant differences in their perceptions between the three groups. For university professors, for example, the acquisition of science content knowledge appeared to be the most important objective of the courses, whereas the other groups preferred the acquisition of more practical knowledge and skills that they could easily use and apply in their classroom teaching later. The university professors tended to think that the science specialized courses would be very useful to the teachers' teaching and contribute to developing their professionality. On the contrary, the in-service and pre-service teachers tended to think that the courses would be not so useful because science theories construct the courses rather than practical knowledge. The implications of these findings are discussed in relation to the future science teacher education.
As curriculum statements require addressing ethical and social issues which are raised by modern science and technology, the ability to perceive ethical and social issues regarding science is necessary for teachers to introduce socio-scientific issues (SSI) in their science class. The purpose of this study is to explore elementary school teachers' ethical sensitivity on SSI and attempts to give implications for teacher education. To explore the ethical sensitivity in the context of SSI, the revised version of the Test for Ethical Sensitivity on Science (TESS) was used. Two socio-scientific issues (genetic engineering and radioactive waste) were provided to read and write down five possible questions they believed should be considered before reaching a decision. Data was collected from eighty-two elementary school teachers in Korea. To analyze the ethical sensitivity, the responses including ethical considerations were analyzed by situation and ethical issues. The result showed that 81 out of 82 teacher participants provided at least more than one ethical consideration on each scenario of this study. However, not many teacher could raise various ethical issues and situation that ethical issue might occur. There were only a few teaches who could consider all the situations, 'process of scientific research', 'application of science and technology', and 'science influenced by society', that ethical issues might occur. Especially, teachers failed to consider that the ethical issue can occur in the situation when science is influenced by society. Based on the results, we suggest that during teacher education teachers need to experience finding various ethical issues that can occur in the context of SSI and especially considering the ethical issues when science is influenced by society.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the application of storytelling on pre-service teachers of elementary school who take courses in 'earth's strata and rock' on science teaching concept and science teaching efficacy. The experiment was aimed at one class (32 students) enrolled in the 'earth's strata and rock' course at intensive course through 15 weeks from March to June. The experiment was taking lectures of "earth's strata and rock" for one semester, and the pre-service teachers of elementary school finished class demonstration with storytelling technique by group. The results and analysis of the study were analyzed by the corresponding sample test in before and after the group test. The conclusion of the study is as follows. First, the application of storytelling method on pre-service teachers of elementary school was effective in science concept. teaching efficacy. Second, the application of storytelling method on pre-service teachers of elementary school was effective in science teaching efficacy. Third, the application of storytelling method on pre-service teachers of elementary school responded positively.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the practical use of process skill under the seventh curriculum at secondary school and teachers' perceptions about hypothesis. Two hundred and twenty-two secondary science teachers responded to a survey. Among all process skills, data interpretation was found to be used most frequently by science teachers. The second most-commonly utilized skill was conclusion, and the least employed skill was hypothesis formation followed closely by data transformation. In addition to these results, the most difficult process skill practised by science teachers was hypothesis formation, followed by data transformation, and controling variables. A majority of science teachers (63.1%) properly defined hypothesis, but only a significant number (5.0%) chose the correct example about hypothesis in real-world contexts. More than ninety percent of science teachers believed the skill of hypothesis formation could be put to use in junior high to senior high school, but practical use of the skill, was too difficult for the science class
In this study, the relationships among self-directed learning ability, science teaching efficacy beliefs (personal science teaching efficacy and science teaching outcome expectation), life satisfaction, job satisfaction, and other background variables of elementary school teachers were investigated. A survey was administered to 234 teachers from 25 elementary schools in Jeonju. It was found that self-directed learning ability of the teachers was significantly correlated with their personal science teaching efficacy, science teaching outcome expectation, life satisfaction, job satisfaction, and age. A stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that personal science teaching efficacy, life satisfaction, science teaching outcome expectation, and age were the significant predictors on their self-directed learning ability.
