  • Spatial ability has been valued as one component of intelligence and as an talented domain. The researchers agree that spatial ability is associated with the achievements in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines and important in STEM education. The purpose of this study is to assess Korean middle school students' spatial ability and compare Gifted Students and General Students' spatial ability. For this purpose, 'The Revised PSVT:R' was translated into Korean and administered 509 Korean middle school students, and also internal consistency reliability evidence and construct validity evidence of 'The Revised PSVT:R' were examined. This study explored the spatial ability of Korean middle school students (graded 7 through 9), and investigated association between spatial ability and students' mathematics achievement, the students' spatial ability according to their gender and grade level. As a result, this study shows that gifted students were better than general students in spatial ability. And there were significant correlations between spatial ability and mathematics, science, Korean language achievement. According to these results, spatial ability should be included as one of the important components in identifying students for gifted education programs.

  • This study investigated the background of the intellectual ability that consists of family environment, intellectual priority, career aims, intellectual extracurricular activities of the students who were selected for the Science Gifted Education Center. We performed a survey and analysis of the students at the Science Gifted Education Center in order to explore their learning attitudes and intellectual ability, as well as the elements that represent their attitudes. As a result of the study, I found that the students in the Science Gifted Education Center generally had good economic and family backgrounds that showed no significant hardship in supporting the students. The families were also highly educated intellectually. In case the talented students in Science desired to be pure scientists, they liked the Science subjects and enjoyed reading science books. It was mostly the male students that took part. As for the attitude toward intellectual ability, they expected to improve their abilities as they gained knowledge and increased their intelligence through learning, although they didn't confide with us on their intelligence quotients. There were four factors for these attitudes. They include the high expectation of them by others; confidence and ease of mind regarding the assignment; the expectation for improvement in intelligence and ability through learning; and, confidence in intelligence and positive attitude in the participation situatio

  • The concern with scientific mode1s has been growing in science education, and schematic models are frequently used to teach science concepts in secondary schools. The aim of this study is to investigate how well the scientifically gifted students understand scientific concepts through activities of modifying scientific models which we developed. Thirty 8th-grade students participated in the study, 15 in a control group and 15 in an experimental group. For the students in the experimental group, teaching material with activities of modifying models, while for the students in the control group, the teaching material with traditional activities such as explanation, problem solving, and reading. The teaching contents in physics for both groups were linear momentum. We used multiple-choice test and essay-type test to evaluate students' achievements after lessons, and then compared their achievements of both groups. Through the research, we could find a clue that model-modifying activities are helpful for the gifted students to enhance their understanding of physics concepts, although the statistics does not show meaningful difference between experimental and control groups.

  • The purpose of this paper is to explore the future direction of research on gifted education through a literature review of dissertations and research reports, as well as an analysis of the trends and milestones achieved related to gifted education. The period from 2003 to 2012, from which the data for this literature review was collected, marks the ten-year period proposed by the Gifted Education Development Comprehensive Plan II and I. Data was collected through a search of the keyword "gifted" on Academic Naver and on Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS). Results showed 1,696 articles from 182 academic journals, 138 doctoral dissertations, 1,470 masters' dissertations, and 798 research reports from 75 institutions. For analysis, each article was classified by target of study, kind of giftedness, subject of study, and methods used for the study. Results from this literature review demonstrated that from 2003 to 2012, the articles from the 182 academic journals and the doctoral and masters' dissertations used quantitative research to analyze elementary and middle school students gifted in math and science as well as the curriculum and programs of their study. This paper provides recommendations for future research on gifted education within the country.

  • Let (Fn)n≥0 be the Fibonacci sequence and p be a prime number. For 1≤k≤m, the Fibonomial coefficient is defined as $$\[\array{m\\k}\]_F=\frac{F_{m-k+1}{\ldots}{F_{m-1}F_m}}{{F_1}{\ldots}{F_k}}$$ and $\[\array{m\\k}\]_F=0$ whan k>m. Let a and n be positive integers. In this paper, we find the conditions of prime number p which divides Fibonomial coefficient $\[\array{P^{a+n}\\{p^a}}\]_F$. Furthermore, we also find the conditions of p when $\[\array{P^{a+n}\\{p^a}}\]_F$ is not divisible by p.
