  • Inquiry occupies an important place in science education, and research related to inquiry is widely conducted. However, due to the inclusiveness of the concept of "exploration," each researcher perceives its meaning differently, and approaches may vary. In addition, criticisms have been raised that the results of classes using inquiry in science education do not guarantee meaningful changes to students. Therefore, this study attempts to identify the trend of SSCI-level research papers dealing with inquiry in science education over the past three years to confirm the current status and effectiveness of the inquiry. Researches used in the analysis are International Journal of Science Education, Journal of Research in Science Teaching, Research in Science Education, and Science Education, and limited to those that directly suggest "inquiry (enquiry)" as a keyword. Based on extracted 75 papers, the classification process was conducted, and an analysis frame was derived inductively by reflecting the subject and characteristics. Specific cases for each category were presented by dividing into three aspects: perception and perspective on inquiry, support and strategy for inquiry, and teacher professional development for inquiry. The results of examining the implications for scientific inquiry are as follows: First, rather than defining inquiry as an implicit proposition or presenting it as a step-by-step procedure, it was induced to grasp the meaning of inquiry more comprehensively and holistically. Second, as to whether the inquiry-based instruction is effective in all aspects of the cognitive, functional, and affective domains of science, the limitations are clearly presented, and the context-dependent and subject-specific properties and limitations of inquiry are emphasized. Third, uncertainty in science inquiry-based instruction can help learners to begin their inquiry and develop interest, but in the process of recognizing data and restructuring knowledge, explicit and specific guidance and scaffolding should be provided at an appropriate timing.

  • Even though there are extracurricular mathematics classes for gifted students in all levels of schools in Korea, teachers cannot conduct the classes properly because the contents of the textbook are not adequate for the purpose of the classes. So, what they tend to do in the classes is just drilling with many problems which have already shown up at university entrance examinations and various mathematics competitions. The purpose of this paper is to give an example of what the content should be in "Mathematics III" (an elective subject for the science high school students according to the fifth and sixth amendment of national curriculum) and to suggest how to design the extracurricular classes for gifted students. Extracurricular classes of the ordinary secondary school as well as the elective course for the science high school can be suitably designed with choices of topics in the contents of Mathematics III.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the actual conditions of operation in school and investigate the perceptions of science teachers and students regarding the 7th elective-centered curriculum of high school science subjects. For this study, a questionnaire survey was conducted for the selected subjects including 127 high school science teachers and 763 high school students in their third year who had experienced the 7th elective-centered curriculum. As a result of the study, concerning the way to present the elective subjects of science, many cases were the alternative way and the group-elective way in humanity courses while natural science courses had the alternative way and the free-elective way in most cases. In other words, in many cases, the right of elective was given within a limited range. The result of the investigation on science teachers' perceptions on the elective-centered curriculum was that negative views dominated as a whole. Especially, earth science teachers showed the most negative attitudes. The number of biology and chemistry teachers who supported students' right to opt subjects were lower than that of physics teachers and earth science teachers who were against it. To help students make a right choice, many viewed that the system of the college Scholastic Ability Test should be complemented in order to prevent any disadvantage to each elective subject or that it was necessary to have systematic and realistic career education. As the result of investigating the perception of high school students in their third year regarding the elective-centered curriculum, they were usually not very satisfied with it. As the reason for it, many said the selection right was limited. Many others also expressed that there were lack of public relations and education on subjects and careers. Based on these results, limits still exist in accepting all demands although there are a lot of efforts made to smoothly adjust supply and demand of science teachers as well as students' electives in the field of school. It is considered necessary to come up with counterplan and complements to prevent basic science from being neglected or lower academic achievement in the subject of science from happening, and at the same time to harmoniously deal with supply and demand of science teachers as well as the issues of students' demands given the actual conditions of school.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the suitability of elective of the 2009 revised high school science curriculum. This study surveyed 911 students in 126 high schools by using proportionate stratified sampling. Each participating students carried out the on-line survey comprising 13 items about personal and academic suitability. The result of analyzing the response of the questionnaire were as follows. First, there were deviation of study-load, depth, difficulty, etc. between science elective I and II. Second, even though 'science' subject was developed as a subject for improving scientific literacy, it was found that it was considered difficult next to Physics I. Besides, it showed 'science' subject could not function properly to improve the ability to communicate. According to the results of analyzing the degree of interest in science elective, it can not be determined 'no interest in subject' is from the reason of difficulty or large amount of contents to memorize. The results of this study will be useful to provide suggestions for the improvement of next high school science curriculum and textbooks.

  • Opinions regarding interdisciplinary unification of medical laboratory science were analyzed by an online questionnaire distributed to 255 professors and 4,000 hospital practitioners in January of 2018. The recovery rate was 79 (30.9%) for professors and 1,368 (34.2%) for hospital practitioners. In the perception survey on the duality of interdisciplinary, both the professors and the hospital practitioners reported that they felt interdisciplinary integration is necessary. The prerequisite of four-year integration was the establishment of institute of accreditation and standardization of curriculum, and the requirements for the four-year integration were considered important for adjustment of student quota and standardization of curriculum. In the four-year integrated approach, the opinion that only universities that passed the accreditation evaluation should operate a four-year system was highest among professors and hospital practitioners. The optimum capacity of university students was less than 40 in cases of 4-year integration. In conclusion, the above results suggest that the professors and hospital practitioners realize 4-year interdisciplinary integration is necessary to produce a competent medical technologist, and the institute of accreditation, standardization of curriculum, and student quota adjustment should be presupposed for 4-year integration.

  • The purpose of the study was to produce resources to help develop instructional methods and programs for school science to reduce gender differences in science achievement by analyzing TIMSS-R results according to item type, benchmark, and content category. Korean male students performed higher than Korean female students and gender differences of Korean students were higher than international means in all item types including multiple-choice, short answer, and extended response type. GDI(Gender Difference Index) of Korean students was lower than international mean in top 10% benchmark but higher than international means in other benchmarks. Korean male students also exhibited higher performance than Korean female students in all content categories except scientific inquiry and the nature of science category. Regarding items that GDIs were higher than 10, the number of items belonged to life science and earth science category was relatively larger and a high percentage of them was not included in school science curriculum. In addition, the items were equally distributed in each performance category. In sum, the study showed various gender differences according to item type, benchmark, and content category. The results could be used to find appropriate instructional methods to reduce gender differences in science achievement.

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze creativity-personality activities given in the high school science textbooks, which developed according to 2009 Revised Science Curriculum, and to examine how goals of new science curriculum were reflected in sceince the textbooks. An analysis shows that the proportion of inquiry is the best high among the types of creativity-personality activities. Also it is organized for a various activities such as reading, writing and debate. As a result of analyzing creativity-personality activities regarding creative thinking and personality element, a variety of creative thinking and personality element was not composed. The creative thinking is primarily divergent thinking, convergent thinking and associative thinking appears in order. In addition, the caring of personality elements is the most, and then honesty, cooperation and responsibility appears in order. Thus, it is necessary to structure a variety of activities for edification of creativity-personality in high school science textbooks. As an analysis of creativity-personality activities regarding elements of the decision-making, the review process do not appear at all, and there are few decision points generally. Therefore, a rational decision making for the sake of edification should be provided with specific decision-making factors.
