Towards Measuring Competitiveness : A Management of Technology Approach (기술경영 경쟁력 측정지표의 개발)

  • This study aims to develop a framework to measure MOT competitiveness of enterprises while proposing a concept called management of technology competitiveness (MOTC). The framework of MOTC based on both resource-based view and competence-based view is consisted of technology competitiveness and management competitiveness. A variety of metrics to measure MOTC are extracted through substantial literature review. As technology competitiveness metric, this study examines R&D investment, R&D workforce, R&D facilities, intellectual property assets, and utilization of information and communication technology; as metric of management competitiveness, leadership competitiveness, maturity of the R&D systems, collaboration and partnership, learning and innovation, and commercialization are considered. We then confirm and derive the multi-dimensions of MOTC through its reliability and validity analysis. The study is expected to provide useful guidelines and references for enterprises' self-evaluation of technology and management competitiveness that is equally applicable to small, medium, and large enterprises that must compete in the global marketplace.

  • Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is the basic strategy for enterprises to obtain competitive advantages, and reflects the most basic value orientation and development concept of enterprises. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between corporate culture, innovation ability and core competitiveness of enterprises from the perspective of corporate social responsibility, and to establish a model and analyze the survey data of 32 agricultural science and technology enterprises in Tianjin by using SPSS23.0. As a result of the study, we found that corporate social responsibility (Ethical responsibility, Philanthropic responsibility) has a significant positive impact on corporate culture and innovation ability, corporate culture has a significant positive impact on innovation ability and corporate core competitiveness, and innovation ability has a significant positive impact on corporate core competitiveness. Therefore, it is suggested that agricultural science and technology enterprises should fulfill their social responsibilities, form a unique corporate culture, serve agriculture with science and technology, and constantly improve the ability of agricultural science and technology innovation, so as to enhance the core competitiveness of enterprises.

  • Recently, there has been a steady decrease in the proportion of the construction sector among Korean engineering firms. Thus it is essential for Korean engineering firms in the construction sector, which lack experience in overseas ventures, to identify and improve their competitiveness for successful overseas expansion. Therefore, in this study, changes in Korean engineering firms' capabilities for the last decade were analyzed to promote entry into overseas road and water resource engineering markets. Competency factors that require urgent improvement were derived based on Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) as a tool for quantitative measurement. As a result, the factor that shows low performance compared to the importance is an overall understanding of the target country in the road and water resource areas. Knowledge of regulatory issues on design, the ability of time management software, and knowledge of the regulatory problems on construction safety are also insufficient. This study can be used as a research methodology to identify competitiveness that Korean engineering firms have to strengthen when they advance into overseas markets in roads, water resources, and other areas.

  • In this study, we have developed an index suitable for determining nanotechnology competitiveness. The analytic hierarchy process is used to compared Korean nanotechnology competitiveness with nine high-ranked countries in terms of OECD GDP along with China, India, and Russia. We fund Korea to be ranked fourth among the twelve countries. Despite Korean high rank, it has some problems with regard to infrastructure and industry development. To become a leading country in nanotechnology, Korea needs to strategically invest into research capabilities for nanotechnology, support industry convergence based on nanotechnology, and increase investment into infrastructure development. The findings of this study will contribute to enhancing nanotechnology-related policies and research.

  • In order to investigate of technology competitiveness for domestic engineering enterprise, using the quantitative and objective patent. In these result, the technology competitiveness(Patent Activity Index, Patent Family Size Index, Patent Impact Index, Technology strength) of our enterprise is far inferior to another country. So we should try to achieve our superiority in competitive power, we devote ourself to put through technical improvements of our domestic engineering enterprise in many ways.

  • Basic research is becoming more important in knowledge-based economy. In Korea, government's research policy has been enforcing applied research and development for economic growth rather than basic research. But, in 21st century, Korea's catch-up policy in science and technology arrived its limit. Without creative knowledge, we cannot expect national competitiveness. Therefore, we have to reform our research policy for national competitiveness. The directions are as follows; first, strengthening basic research, especially use-inspired basic research. Second, enlarging individual research program rather than group research program. Third, encouraging universities' specification through research grant review criteria. Fourth, beginning a new program for supporting regional universities' competitiveness.

The Impact of Product Consumption Strategy and Financial Autonomy on Competitiveness of Technology Firms in Vietnam

  • This study aims to determine the impact of product consumption strategy and financial autonomy on the competitiveness of technology firms in Vietnam. This study employs panel data of 27 technology firms collected from listed financial statements of the business for the period (2010-2019). The study also uses some indicators reflecting the macroeconomic situation of the economy collected from the World Bank. Instead of Exploratory Factor Analysis which has been used before, the study uses the feasible generalized least squares (FGLS) estimation as the main method. The FGLS corrects the variance changes and autocorrelation on the dataset of these Vietnamese technology firms. The results reveal that the strategy of product consumption and financial autonomy positively affect the competitiveness of technology firms. These are also two core factors of the technology industry, which have a strong impact on the increase in the competitiveness of firms. The findings of this study suggest that technology firms do not need to invest in many long-term assets, but mainly in short-term assets in order to quickly respond to the strategies for consuming new technology products of the business. In addition, the increase in Gross Domestic Product per capita also positively affects the increase in the competitiveness of technology firms.

A Study on the Technological Competitiveness of Aircraft Infra Industries by using Patents (특허분석을 통한 항공기반산업의 기술경쟁력에 관한 연구)

  • This paper considers the technological competitiveness of aircraft infra industries that are bases of the aircraft industry development in Korea. We performed focus group interviews to aircraft industry specialists and classified the aircraft infra industries by eight fields: metallurgical assembly, general machinery, precision instruments, materials & parts, communication appliances, computer, semi-conductor/ electronic component, electronics. Through the United States patents analysis for the G7 countries and Korea during 1995-2006, we identified the technological specificities and competences of each country. RTA(Revealed Technology Advantage) index and CII(Current Impact Index) are used to examine the technological specificity and technological competence respectively. Finally, we introduced TCI(Technological Competitiveness Index) which could reflect quantitative level as well as qualitative level of patents for each aircraft infra industry. The results show that Korea has occupied the technological competitiveness in the semi-conductor and electronic component industry out of eight aircraft infra industries, and achieved a competitive edge in communication appliance industry in the mid 2000s.

  • It is reported that, admitting some of the Small and Medium Industries in Korea have world-wide up-to-date technology, but technical competitiveness of most of Industries is approximately 43% that of advanced countries. A research has been carried out to evaluate technical competitiveness of the Small and Medium Industries in Kangwon Province based on the objective standards. It is identified that competitiveness of technology is higher in general while capability of technical development is relatively lower.

Effectiveness of SMEs Support by Retired Scientists and Engineers

  • Technology and knowledge are emerging as core elements of competitiveness for businesses. SMEs lack technology and knowledge, and are also limited in their ability to absorb external knowledge. The government is supporting SMEs' absorption of external knowledge by utilizing retired scientists and engineers, but related research is insufficient. Thus, this study conducted an empirical analysis on the effects of support by retired scientists and engineers at SMEs. Specifically, the study confirmed the effects of company competitiveness and technology development capacities at each stage of technology commercialization. Results of the study confirmed that in an environment where technology competitiveness of SMEs are emphasized, the support of retired scientists and engineers has some effect on the competitiveness of SMEs and their technology development capacity. Therefore, this study suggests important implications for future policy development and execution of related projects.
