  • Although the face almost always has an axisymmetric structure, it is generally not symmetrical image for the face image. However, the mirror image of the face image can reflect possible variation of the poses and illumination opposite to that of the original face image. A robust minimum squared error classification (RMSEC) algorithm is proposed in this paper. Concretely speaking, the original training samples and the mirror images of the original samples are taken to form a new training set, and the generated training set is used to perform the modified minimum sqreared error classification(MMSEC) algorithm. The extensive experiments show that the accuracy rate of the proposed RMSEC is greatly increased, and the the proposed RMSEC is not sensitive to the variations of the parameters.

  • This paper presents a new Nearest-Neighbors based weighted representation for images and weighted K-Nearest-Neighbors (WKNN) classifier to improve the precision of image classification using the Bag of Visual Words (BOVW) based models. Scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) features are firstly extracted from images. Then, the K-means++ algorithm is adopted in place of the conventional K-means algorithm to generate a more effective visual dictionary. Furthermore, the histogram of visual words becomes more expressive by utilizing the proposed weighted vector quantization (WVQ). Finally, WKNN classifier is applied to enhance the properties of the classification task between images in which similar levels of background noise are present. Average precision and absolute change degree are calculated to assess the classification performance and the stability of K-means++ algorithm, respectively. Experimental results on three diverse datasets: Caltech-101, Caltech-256 and PASCAL VOC 2011 show that the proposed WVQ method and WKNN method further improve the performance of classification.

  • The narrow-down approach, separately composed of search and classification stages, is an effective way of dealing with large-scale hierarchical text classification. Recent approaches introduce methods of incorporating global, local, and path information extracted from web taxonomies in the classification stage. Meanwhile, in the case of utilizing path information, there have been few efforts to address existing limitations and develop more sophisticated methods. In this paper, we propose an expansion method to effectively exploit category path information based on the observation that the existing method is exposed to a term mismatch problem and low discrimination power due to insufficient path information. The key idea of our method is to utilize relevant information not presented on category paths by adding more useful words. We evaluate the effectiveness of our method on state-of-the art narrow-down methods and report the results with in-depth analysis.

  • This paper studies medical data classification methods, comparing decision tree and system reconstruction analysis as applied to heart disease medical data mining. The data we study is collected from patients with coronary heart disease. It has 1,723 records of 71 attributes each. We use the system-reconstruction method to weight it. We use decision tree algorithms, such as induction of decision trees (ID3), classification and regression tree (C4.5), classification and regression tree (CART), Chi-square automatic interaction detector (CHAID), and exhausted CHAID. We use the results to compare the correction rate, leaf number, and tree depth of different decision-tree algorithms. According to the experiments, we know that weighted data can improve the correction rate of coronary heart disease data but has little effect on the tree depth and leaf number.

  • Subject classification of journals is important because it can be utilized for the improvement of scholarly information services and analysis by research area. The classification by experts in a subject area wastes a lot of time and expense. On the other hand, the simple classification with basic information, such as the journal title has limitations. To solve this problem, this paper suggests the automatic classification of Korean journals using the SCI journals information cited by Korean journals, and an analysis of the classification result. In particular, this study adopted the WoS subject categories for classification to support the base for comparison between the Korean citation database and the global citation database (KSCI vs. SCI).

  • In this study, we classified three copying papers and Korean, Chinese, and Japanese traditional papers using IR and/or NIR spectra and principal component analysis. Various chemicals are used when producing fine papers. In this case, the IR method to analyze functional groups is suitable for the classification of paper. On the other hand, NIR analysis is more suitable for the classification of traditional papers, as it uses nearly raw materials (pulp). Therefore, principal component analysis using IR and NIR depending on the paper production process will be the classification tool of paper.

  • Foraging is a biological process, where a bacterium moves to search for nutriments, and avoids harmful substances. This paper proposes a hybrid approach integrating the bacterial foraging optimization algorithm (BFOA) in a radial basis function neural network, applied to image classification, in order to improve the classification rate and the objective function value. At the beginning, the proposed approach is presented and described. Then its performance is studied with an accent on the variation of the number of bacteria in the population, the number of reproduction steps, the number of elimination-dispersal steps and the number of chemotactic steps of bacteria. By using various values of BFOA parameters, and after different tests, it is found that the proposed hybrid approach is very robust and efficient for several-image classification.

  • In this paper, a method of mood classification based on user brainwaves is proposed for real-time application in commercial services. Unlike conventional mood analyzing systems, the proposed method focuses on classifying real-time user moods by analyzing the user's brainwaves. Applying brainwave-related research in commercial services requires two elements - robust performance and comfortable fit of. This paper proposes a filter based on Regularized Common Spatial Patterns (RCSP) and presents its use in the implementation of mood classification for a music service via a wireless consumer electroencephalography (EEG) device that has only 14 pins. Despite the use of fewer pins, the proposed system demonstrates approximately 10% point higher accuracy in mood classification, using the same dataset, compared to one of the best EEG-based mood-classification systems using a skullcap with 32 pins (EU FP7 PetaMedia project). This paper confirms the commercial viability of brainwave-based mood-classification technology. To analyze the improvements of the system, the changes of feature variations after applying RCSP filters and performance variations between users are also investigated. Furthermore, as a prototype service, this paper introduces a mood-based music list management system called MyMusicShuffler based on the proposed mood-classification method.

  • In Korea, the largest agricultural lands are paddy fields which have poor infiltration and drainage properties. Recently, Korean government pursuits cultivating upland crops in paddy fields to reduce overproduced rice in Korea. In order to succeed this policy, it is critical to set criteria suitability classification for upland crops cultivating in paddy field soils. The objective of this study was developing guideline of suitability classification for sesame cultivation in paddy field soils. Yields of sesame cultivated in paddy field soils and soil properties were investigated at 40 locations at nationwide scale. Soil properties such as topography, soil texture, soil moisture contents, slope, and drainage level were investigated. The guideline of suitability classification for sesame was determined by multi-regression method. As a result, sesame yields had the greatest correlation with topography, soil moisture content, and slope. Since sesame is sensitive to excessive soil moisture content, paddy fields with well drained, slope of 7-15% and mountain foot or hill were best suit for cultivating sesame. Sesame yields were greater with less soil moisture contents. Based on these results, area of best suitable paddy field land for sesame was 161,400 ha, suitable land was 62,600 ha, possible land was 331,600 ha, and low productive land was 1,075,500 ha. Compared to existing suitability classification, the new guideline of classification recommended smaller area of best or suitable areas to cultivate sesame. This result may suggest that sesame cultivation in paddy field can be very susceptible to soil moisture contents.
