Maximum Limit on the Number of Science Papers Man Can Write

  • "Science" journal is one of the world's top academic journals. Many researchers are trying to publish their work in Science, and only a few selected novel papers are accepted. However, we think that this kind of process cannot continue forever. In this paper, we show that there is a limit to the number of Science papers that can be written. Therefore, the day will come when Science cannot publish new papers anymore. Using a similar method, we estimate the maximum limit on the number of pop songs that can be composed. By extending our discussion to all kinds of digital contents, we derive a mathematical expression for the maximum number of digital contents of a certain type that can be created. These results imply that someday man will not be able to produce new papers or new digital contents anymore. This conclusion raises deep philosophical questions.

Comparison of Meat Quality and Fatty Acid Composition of Longissimus Muscles from Purebred Pigs and Three-way Crossbred LYD Pigs

  • This study was conducted to find pork quality to meet the needs of consumers. Thus, the meat quality and fatty acid composition of longissimus muscles from purebred pigs (Landrace, Yorkshire, and Duroc) and three-way crossbred LYD pigs were compared and evaluated. Chemical compositions of longissimus muscles were significant (p<0.05) different among pigs. Duroc contained significant (p<0.05) higher fat contents than other pigs, whereas significant (p<0.05) higher moisture contents were observed in Landrace, Yorkshire, and LYD pigs compared to those of Duroc pigs. The values of pH24 h and pH14 d were the highest in Landrace pigs. Myoglobin contents of LYD pigs were higher (p<0.05) than those of purebred pigs. Regarding meat color, Duroc and Yorkshire pigs had higher redness values than Landrace and LYD pigs, while Landrace pigs had the lowest (p<0.05) color values among all pigs. There was no significant difference in shear force or water holding capacity (WHC). Duroc pigs maintained the lowest drip loss during 14 d of cold storage. In sensory evaluation, the marbling scores of Duroc pigs were higher (p<0.05) than other pigs. Regarding fatty acid compositions, total USFA, poly-, n-3, and n-6 contents were the highest (p<0.05) in LYD pigs, while total SFA contents were the highest (p<0.05) in Duroc pigs. Based on these results, purebred pigs had superior overall meat quality to crossbred pigs.

Determination of Tocopherol Contents in Refined Edible Oils Using an HPLC Method

  • A high-performance liquid chromatography method was applied to determine the contents of tocopherols in edible oils using a LiChrosorb DIOL HPLC column and hexane fortified with 0.1% acetic acid in an isocratic mode. The validation of the method included tests for linearity, sensitivity, accuracy, precision, and recovery. All calibration curves showed good linear regression ($r^2$>0.9995) within the tested ranges. The established method offered good precision and accuracy with overall intra-day and inter-day variations of 0.94$\sim$4.27 and 1.77$\sim$ 4.88%, respectively. The tocopherol recoveries ranged from 91.44$\sim$108.90%. Subsequently, the method was successfully applied to qualitatively and quantitatively determine the total contents of $\alpha$, $\gamma$, and $\delta$-tocopherols in 12 selected refined edible oils, showing a range of 0.92 to 188.71 mg/100 g.

반응표면분석법을 이용한 타타리메밀싹에서 플라보노이드 추출 최적화 (Optimization of the Conditions of Flavonoid Extraction From Tartary Buckwheat Sprout Using Response Surface Methodology)

  • 타타리메밀은 rutin, quercetin, kaempferol, myricetin 등의 플라보노이드를 함유하고 있는 곡물이다. 또한, 이러한 생리활성 물질은 곡물을 발아시키고 싹으로 재배하였을 경우 증가하는 경향을 가지게 된다. 이에 본 연구에서는 반응표면분석법을 활용하여 재배한 타타리메밀싹으로부터 생리활성 물질인 플라보노이드, rutin, quercetin, myricetin의 추출 함량이 최대로 되는 최적추출조건을 도출하였다. Box-Behnken design에 따라 함량에 영향을 끼칠 수 있는 독립변수로 추출온도(X1, 50~70℃), 추출시간(X2, 5~9 hr), 에탄올의 농도(X3, 60~90%)를 설정하였고, 종속변수로는 rutin, quercetin, myricetin 각각의 함량을 사용하였다. 각각의 함량에 대한 모델식의 R2은 0.95 이상으로 유의성을 가져 적합하다고 판단되었다. 적합성 결여 test에서의 p-value가 모두 0.1 이상을 나타내어 유의성이 기각되었고, 이는 모델이 추출조건을 잘 설명할 수 있음을 나타내었다. 최적화된 추출 방법은 추출온도 51.03℃에서 6.62시간 동안 69.16%의 에탄올을 이용하여 추출하는 것이었다. 최적 조건에서의 예측된 rutin, quercetin, myricetin의 함량은 각각 808.467, 193.296, 37.361 ㎍/ml이었다. 예상된 모델을 검증하기 위하여 최적화된 추출조건을 이용하여 10회 추출을 진행한 결과, rutin, quercetin, myricetin 함량이 각각 802.84±8.49 ㎍/ml, 193.76±2.80 ㎍/ml, 34.84±0.43 ㎍/ml으로 측정되었다 rutin과 quercetin는 예측치와 실험치가 유의적 차이를 보이지 않았지만, myricetin의 경우에는 예상된 값에 조금 미치지 못하는 값이 측정되었다.

  • 최근 정보기술 및 인터넷의 급속한 발전으로 지식정보 자원들이 디지털화 되어 인터넷을 통해 유통되고 있다. 과학기술 연구 현장에서 수시로 발생되는 세미나, 워크숍 등 연구 성과물의 공유를 위해서는 동영상 콘텐츠의 구축과 식별체계 기반의 유통시스템 구축이 필요하다. 본 연구의 목적은 세미나, 워크숍 등 과학기술 동영상 콘텐츠의 효율적인 정보 공유 및 활용을 위한 KOI 식별체계 기반의 정보유통시스템 구축 방안을 제시하는데 있으며, 이를 위해 식별체계 개요 및 현황과 유통시스템의 기능적 요소인 동영상 콘텐츠 과제 및 슬라이드의 KOI 식별체계 적용 방법, 동영상 정보연계 시스템, 식별체계 통합관리 시스템, 동영상 메타데이터 구성 및 검색 방안 등을 기술하였다.

선박기인 해양재난 피해축소를 위한 해양과학기술 개발수요 도출 (Demands to Develop Marine Science Technology to Reduce Damage of Disasters Caused by Marine Accidents)

  • The purpose of this study is to ascertain the demands for developing marine science technology to reduce fatalities caused by marine accidents. For this purpose, we analyzed the contents of about 77,000 news articles posted for a month after the tragedy of the Sewol (April 16~May 15) to identify keywords and then we used the Social Network Analysis (SNA) for each keyword. The findings of the analysis show that there are five networks and that each one reveals different aspects about technology development to prepare for marine accidents. Based on these findings, we categorized three kinds of demands for technology development from the perspective of marine science technology: provision of the information about the marine environment, development of equipment and technology to overcome extreme environments, and the establishment of a field support system.

  • 우리 문화원형의 디지털콘텐츠화를 위한 조작적 개념 정의와 디지털기술의 발전에 따른 문화콘텐츠의 디지털화 필요성을 고찰하였다. 아울러 문화원형과 디지털콘텐츠기술을 접목하여 우리 문화에 담겨진 원초적 아이디어와 이미지를 원형으로 한 문화원형 디지털콘텐츠 개발을 위한 프로세스를 제안하였다. 본 연구는 문화원형콘텐츠의 요소 추출과 문화원형콘텐츠의 가치사슬 점검을 통하여 문화원형 디지털콘텐츠화 개발 모형을 도출하였다.

알루미늄과 탄소 함량에 따른 Fe-23Mn계 고망간강의 열간 압연 시 발생하는 균열 현상 분석 (Analysis of Cracking Phenomenon Occurring During Hot Rolling of Fe-23Mn High-manganese Steels with Different Aluminium and Carbon Contents)

  • In this study, a microstructural investigation was conducted on the cracking phenonmenon occurring during hot rolling of Fe-23Mn high-manganese steels with different aluminium and carbon contents. Particular emphasis was placed on the phase stability of austenite and ferrite dependent on the chemical composition. An increase in the aluminum content promoted the formation of ferrite band structures which were easily deformed or cracked. In the steels containing high carbon contents of 0.4 wt.% or higher, on the other hand, the volume fraction and thickness of ferrite bands decreased and thus the cracking frequency was significantly reduced. Based on these findings, it is said that the microstructural evolution occurring during hot rolling of high-manganese steels with different aluminium and carbon contents plays an important role in the cracking phenomenon. To prevent the cracking, therefore, the formation of second phases such as ferrite should be minimized during the hot rolling by the appropriate control of the chemical composition and process parameters
