Recent Progress of MIRIS Development

  • MIRIS is the main payload of the Science and Technology Satellite-3 (STSAT-3). which is being developed by KASI for infrared survey observation of the Galactic plane at Paschen alpha wavelength. Wideband filters in I and H band will also be used to observe cosmic infrared background. The MIRIS will perform astronomical observations in the near-infrared wavelengths of 0.9~2 ${\mu}m$ using a 256 ${\times}$ 256 Teledyne PICNIC FPA sensor providing a 3.67 ${\times}$ 3.67 degree field of view with a pixel scale of 51.6 arcsec. The flight model of the MIRIS has been recently developed, The system performance tests have been made in the laboratory, including opto-mechanics test, vibration test, thermal vacuum test and passive cooling test down to 200K, using a thermally controlled vacuum chamber. Several focus tests showed good agreements compared to initial design parameters. Recent efforts are being concentrated to improve the system performances, particularly to reduce readout noise level in electronics. After assembly and integration into the satellite bus, the MIRIS will be launched in 2012.

  • KASI is developing the MIRIS (Multi-purpose IR Imaging System), as the main payload of Science and Technology Satellite-3 (STSAT-3). The Engineering Qualification Model (EQM) of the MIRIS has been recently fabricated, and Flight Model (FM) is now in final development stage. The system performance tests have been made mainly with EQM, and partly with FM in the laboratory, including opto-mechanics test, vibration test, thermal-vacuum test and passive cooling test down to 200K, using a thermal controlled vacuum chamber. Most of the system performance test results of the MIRIS are satisfied with the required specifications and its results were reflected in development of the FM with several revisions of the system design. In this paper, we present detailed system performance test procedures of the MIRIS and its results.

  • OWL-Net (Optical Wide-field patroL Network) is the first space situational awareness facility of its kind in South Korea which consists of five identical 0.5 m wide-field telescopes with 4K by 4K CCDs. The five stations are located in Mongolia, Morocco, Israel, United States, and South Korea. They are being operated in fully autonomous mode with the minimum human intervention. The primary objective of OWL-Net is to track Korean domestic satellites. In addition, it can be possible to conduct time-series photometry of bright solar system objects. We will present the system overview of the OWL-Net telescopes and progress report.

  • The utility of transgenic animal for studying the function of a particular gene in the breast system has been limited because transgenic typically occurs constitutively throughout development and in most tissue. So we use the inducible gene expression system. Several inducible gene expression system have been developed in vitro in recent years to overcome limitation with transgenic mice. (omitted)

Correlation Between the “seeing FWHM” of Satellite Optical Observations and Meteorological Data at the OWL-Net Station, Mongolia

  • The correlation between meteorological data collected at the optical wide-field patrol network (OWL-Net) Station No. 1 and the seeing of satellite optical observation data was analyzed. Meteorological data and satellite optical observation data from June 2014 to November 2015 were analyzed. The analyzed meteorological data were the outdoor air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and cloud index data, and the analyzed satellite optical observation data were the seeing full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) data. The annual meteorological pattern for Mongolia was analyzed by collecting meteorological data over four seasons, with data collection beginning after the installation and initial set-up of the OWL-Net Station No. 1 in Mongolia. A comparison of the meteorological data and the seeing of the satellite optical observation data showed that the seeing degrades as the wind strength increases and as the cloud cover decreases. This finding is explained by the bias effect, which is caused by the fact that the number of images taken on the less cloudy days was relatively small. The seeing FWHM showed no clear correlation with either temperature or relative humidity.

Effects of Supplementing Vitamin E and Nanoparticle-Sized Vitamin E on Growth Performance, Blood Profile, and Meat Quality in Broilers

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of vitamin E and nanoparticle-sized vitamin E (NVE) in a broiler diet on growth performance, blood profiles, and meat quality. A total of 45 one-day-old Arbor Acres broilers (initial body weight of 37.00 ± 0.41 g) were used in this experiment for 28 days. All broilers were randomly allocated into three dietary treatments in a randomized complete block design. The dietary treatments were as follows: a basal diet (CON), a basal diet supplementing with 380 mg/kg of vitamin E (T1), and a basal diet supplementing with 380 mg/kg of NVE (T2). Each treatment had five replicates with three birds per cage. On days 0-7, the T1 and T2 groups significantly increased (P<0.05) body weight gain compared to the CON group. Also, the T1 and T2 groups significantly increased (P<0.05) vitamin E content in blood and breast meat compared to the CON group. In shearing force, the T2 group showed a lower tendency (P=0.070) than the CON group. The T1 group showed a higher tendency (P=0.086) in the b* (yellowness) value than the T2 group. On day 7 after the end of the experiment, the T2 group significantly decreased (P<0.05) TBA values compared to the CON group. In conclusion, supplementation with vitamin E or NVE can improve broiler growth performance in the starter period, reduce TBA value through the antioxidant action of vitamin E, prevent lipid oxidation, and improve shelf life.
