Effects of a School-based Intervention Program for Middle School Adolescent Girls with Depression: As Part of the School Health Services

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a school-based intervention program for middle school adolescent girls with depression. Methods: The study was a pretest-posttest repeated-measure design with a nonequivalent control group. Fifty eight students with depressive symptoms were recruited from two middle schools in Seoul, Korea. The data were collected from the intervention (n=30) and the comparison group (n=28). The research instrument was Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale. Results: The intervention group greatly improved from baseline to 10 weeks and then saw a slight positive change between 10 and 13 weeks. Conclusion: The results of this research show that depression intervention programs are effective for young female adolescents. Thus the investigation has important school-based treatment implications, and should be integrated into school curriculums by school health nurses for early intervention of depressive symptoms in middle school adolescent girls.

Effects of Mothers Involved in Dental Health Program for Their Children

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of mothers' involvement in a dental health program for their elementary school children. Methods: This study was a non-equivalent control group pre-post test design in which knowledge and behaviors related to dental health, perceived benefits and barriers, self-efficacy and plaque control scores were compared between the experimental group (n=26) for whom the dental health program included the direct involvement of the mothers, and the control group (n=24) for whom knowledge related to dental health was provided through brochures. Results: Scores for the experimental group in which the mothers were involved in the dental health program were significantly higher for knowledge, behaviors in dental health, self-efficacy and plaque control compared to the control group. Conclusion: Results of this study suggest that mothers involvement in the dental health program is effective in reinforcing dental health enhancing behavior in elementary school children.

Experiences of School Health Teachers in Special Schools for Students with Disabilities (특수학교 보건교사의 돌봄 경험)

  • Purpose: The gradual increase in the number of children with disabilities in Korea highlights the necessity for further research on the role of school health teachers in their care. This study explored the specific experiences of school health teachers in special schools through individual in-depth interviews. Methods: In this study, 11 school health teachers participated, and data were collected through individual in-depth interviews. Thematic analysis was employed to analyze the collected data. Results: The experiences of health teachers at special schools were classified into 5 themes and 13 subthemes. These included "concerns about working in special schools and attachment after working," "management of diverse diseases and ongoing, careful observation," "ambivalence regarding students with disabilities," "competences needed to care for students with disabilities," and "enhancing care education for students with disabilities: demanding institutional support." Conclusion: Effective student health management depends on open communication channels and the establishment of strong connections among health teachers, school personnel, and parents of impaired students. To enhance the quality of care for children with disabilities, specialized education programs to improve teachers' healthcare competency should be developed. Additionally, specific guidelines for the range of medical treatments provided by health instructors, should be devised.

A Systematic Review of Forest Therapy Programs for Elementary School Students (초등학생 대상의 산림치유 프로그램에 대한 체계적 문헌고찰)

  • Purpose: There are many forest and outdoor programs being offered but systematic reviews of effects are lacking. This study was done to identify content, format, and strategies of forest therapy programs for elementary school students. Methods: Literature search using keywords in English and Korean was performed using 6 electronic databases in December 2016. Search participants were elementary school students and interventions conducted in the forest. Seventeen forest therapy studies were selected for evaluation. Risk of Bias Assessment tool for non-randomized study was used for quality assessment. Results: All studies were quasi-experimental designs. Forest therapy programs included various activities in forests such as experience of five senses, meditation in the forest, walking in the forest, ecological play, observation of animals and insects. All studies used psychosocial health variables and forest healing programs had positive effects on sociality, depression, anxiety, self-esteem, stress, aggression, anger, and school adjustment. Limitations of these studies were vague reporting of the study, lack of ethical review and rigorous research designs. Conclusion: Forest therapy for elementary school child can be an effective way to improve psychosocial health. Future studies with rigorous study designs are needed to assess long-term effects of forest therapy on physical and psychosocial health.

Perceived Occupational Stress and Depression of School Nurses (일지역 보건교사의 지각된 직무스트레스와 우울)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify occupational stress and to determine level of depression of school nurses and to identify factors that influence depression. Methods: A cross-sectional design was employed in this study. Participants included 146 school nurses from D city. Data collection was conducted on January 17-21, 2011, using self-administered questionnaires. The SPSS/WIN 11.5 was used in performance of data analysis. Results: Significant differences in occupational stress were observed according to age, occupation and perceived mental health status, and in depression according to marital status, perceived mental health status and physical disease. Depression showed significant positive correlation with occupational stress (r=.35, p<.001). In regression analysis, occupational stress and physical health state were found to be the cause of depression in 17% of subject. Conclusion: Findings of this study allow for a comprehensive understanding of occupational stress and level of depression of school nurses in Korea. Further study using a larger random sample and various variables is needed.

School Nurses' Management for Children and Adolescents with Diabetes (보건교사의 당뇨병 아동 관리 현황)

  • Purpose: The study purposes were to explore school nurses' experience, perceived barriers, and education needs in diabetes management at school. Methods: This study was a cross sectional study and the study participants were recruited conveniently at continuing education seminars for school nurses at Incheon Metropolitan City. Results: Data for 101 school nurses were analyzed. The nurses were all women and their mean age was $46.9{\pm}9.3$ years. About 66% of them had experience with children with diabetes at school. The school nurses reported that 74.6% of the students tested their blood glucose by themselves, the school clinic was the most common place for blood glucose tests (47.8%) and insulin injections (50.8%) and the nurses knew students' diagnosis through the student health survey (58.2%). About half of the nurses (53.7%) reported that glucagon should be available at school and 49.2% were willing to inject glucagon when necessary. The most frequently reported barrier in diabetes management was role confusion ($6.0{\pm}1.3$) and the most common educational need was emergency responses ($5.9{\pm}1.4$). Conclusions: School health policy for diabetes management and diabetes resources are necessary to minimize role confusion of school nurses, improve emergency response, and facilitate health promotion activities in diabetes management.

The Factors Influencing on Health Promotion Behavior in Low-Income Vulnerable Elementary Students (취약계층 초등학교 고학년 방과후 교실 아동의 건강증진행위 실천의 영향요인 분석)

  • Purpose: The goal of this study was to find out factors influencing the health promotion behavior of low-income vulnerable 4th, 5th and 6th-grade elementary school students. The specific goals were: first, to find out difference in health knowledge, self-esteem and health promotion behavior according to general characteristics; second, to investigate the correlations among health knowledge, self-esteem and health promotion: and, third, to analyze factors influencing health promotion behavior. Methods: The subjects of this study were 137 low-income vulnerable 4th, 5th and 6th-grade elementary school children who were participating after-school programs in Seoul. Results: Statistically significant differences were observed in health knowledge, self-esteem and health promotion behavior between girls and boys. In the sub categories, differences were observed in personal hygiene and health responsibility, stress management and personal relationship. The correlation of health promotion behavior with self-esteem and health knowledge was statistically significant. Regression analysis revealed that the influencing factor is self-esteem with the other variables under control. Conclusion: Health promotion education requires low-income vulnerable elementary children to increase their self-esteem. We recommend that it should be one of the most effective ways to split boys and girls to educate them in disparate classrooms.

Factors Influencing Health Promoting Lifestyle in High School Students (일 지역 고등학생의 건강증진생활양식 수행의 예측요인에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing health promoting lifestyle in high school students. Method: The study subjects were 477 high school students. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation and Stepwise Multiple Regression with SPSS statistical program. Results: The average item score for health promoting lifestyle was 2.44. The highest subscale score was self actualization (2.85), while the lowest subscale scores were interpersonal relationship (2.82), nutrition (2.57), exercise (2.56) and health responsibility (1.77). There was a significant difference between gender, sleeping hours, perceived health state, economic state, school performance, father's education, mother's education, living together and health promoting lifestyle. The most powerful predictor of health promoting lifestyle was self-efficacy (29.9%). The combination of self-efficacy, family function, activity-related effect, commitment to a plan of action, situational influences and social support accounted for 55% of the variance in the health promoting lifestyle. Conclusion: Self-efficacy was the most powerful variance of health promoting lifestyle. Therefore, health promoting programs that increase self-efficacy should be developed to promote a healthier lifestyle among high school students.

A Study on Health Perception and Health Promoting Lifestyle of the Female Elementary School Teacher (초등학교 여교사의 건강지각과 건강증진 생활양식에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between health perception and health promoting lifestyle with female teacher at elementary school. Method: The survey was carried out on a convenience sample of 757 teachers in B metropolitan city. Data were collected from November to December, 2004, by using the Health Perception Questionnaire and Health promoting lifestyle Profile(HPLP), and analyzed by SPSS program. Result: 1. The score of health perception status was $2.82{\pm}0.24$, and health promoting lifestyle was $2.61{\pm}0.41$. The highest subcategory of health promoting lifestyle was self actualization, and the lowest one was health responsibility. 2. Health perception was significantly correlated with health promoting lifestyle. 3. Health perception was significantly different according to economic status. 4. Health promoting lifestyle was significantly different according to age, career and economic status. Conclusion: This study revealed that the health perception is an important factor related to the health promoting lifestyle of female elementary school teacher. Therefore, helping consciously the health perception and health promoting lifestyle of female elementary school teacher to do their job attainment and at same time it has to be a model to the student's health promoting lifestyle.
