This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the structural performance of an innovative GFRP-concrete composite beam construction, which is reinforced with longitudinal GFRP pultruded box-profile and transverse steel stirrups. GFRP perfobond (PBL) shear connectors are employed to enhance the bonding performance between the GFRP profile and the concrete portion. To investigate the shear and flexural performance of this composite system, eight specimens were designed and tested under three-point and four-point bending. The main variables were the height of the composite beam and the shear span-to-depth ratio. The test results indicated that bonding cracks did not occur at the interface between the GFRP profile and the concrete until the final stage of the test. This shows that the specimens performed well as composite beams during the test and that the GFRP PBL connectors were reliable. Based on the test results, two calculation methods were used to determine the flexural and shear capacity of the composite beams. A comparative study of the test and theoretical results suggests that the proposed methods can reasonably predict both the flexural and shear capacities of the specimens, whereas the provisions of ACI 440 are relatively conservative on both counts.
Multi-layered primary linings have been proved to be highly effective for tunneling in severe squeezing grounds. But there still has not existed well-established design method for it. Basically, there are two main critical problems in this method, including determinations of allowable deformation and distribution of support stiffness. In order to address such problems, an attempt to investigate the mechanical response of a circular tunnel with double primary linings is performed in this paper. Analytical solutions in closed form for stresses and displacements around tunnels are derived. In addition, the effectiveness and reliability of theoretical formulas provided are well validated by using the numerical method. Finally, based on the analytical solutions, a parametric investigation on the effects of allowable deformation and distribution of support stiffness on tunnel performance is conducted. Results show that the rock pressure and displacement are significantly affected by these two design parameters. It can be found that rock pressure decreases as either allowable deformation increases or stiffness of the first primary lining decreases, but rock displacement shows an opposite trend. This paper can provide a useful guidance for the design of multi-layered primary linings.
The analytical approach for stability and response of iced conductor under uniform wind or turbulent wind is presented in this study. A nonlinear dynamic model is established to describe the motion of iced conductor galloping. In the case of uniform wind, the stability condition is derived by analyzing the eigenvalue associated with linearized matrix; The first order and second order approximation of galloping amplitude are obtained using multi-scale method. However, real wind has random characteristics essentially. To accurately evaluate the performance of the galloping iced conductor, turbulence wind should be described by random processes. In the case of turbulence wind, the Lyapunov exponent is conducted to judge the stability condition; The probability density of displacement is obtained by using the path integral method to predict galloping amplitude. An example is proposed to verify the effectiveness of the previous methods. It is shown that the fluctuating component of wind has little influence on the stability of iced conductor, but it can increase galloping amplitude. The analytical results on stability and response are also verified by numerical time stepping method.
Owing to an increase in the air tightness of recent buildings, the natural ventilation rate was significantly lowered and the removal of accumulated moisture became difficult in these buildings. The hygrothermal performance of these buildings should be carefully considered to provide comfortable indoor environment by removing the moisture condensation risk and the mold growth potential. In this study, hygrothermal performance of two selected wall structures was investigated based on WUFI simulation program. The results displayed that the indoor temperature had impact on the moisture accumulation in the insulation layer for both modeled walls, showing that lower indoor temperature resulted in higher moisture accumulation, especially in the wood frame structure. Also, the yearly moisture accumulation profile exhibited a downward shift throughout the year by adding a vapour retarder with a lower sd-value. In addition, both of the two walls have condensation risk in winter, due to low temperature level. The wood frame structure has a bigger fluctuation and higher condensation risk than the concrete structure.

MMS has been seen as the key application in its entry into the 3G mobile markets. Furthermore, the combination of WLAN and 3G wireless technologies will make MMS service more popular, bringing benefits to both service providers and their customers. To realize seamless MMS service over WLAN and CDMA2000 networks, we design and implement new platform architecture by reusing the existing standards and network elements at the same time. We employ loose coupling approach and Mobile IP approach to propose new platform architecture, interfacing MMSC with many existing components. Based on our platform architecture, we also present seamless MMS delivery implementations that can't be possible within the current MMS reference architecture. This paper will make a contribution for service providers to offer their customers with seamless MMS service over WLAN and CDMA2000 networks.

Fluid-Structure Interaction analysis of a circular cylinder surrounded by incompressible turbulent flow is presented. The fluid flow is modeled by incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in conjunction with large-eddy simulation for turbulent vortical flows. The circular cylinder is modeled as elastic continuum described by elasto-dynamic equation of motion. Finite element method based approach is utilized for unified formulation of fluid-structure interaction analysis. The magnitude and frequency of structural response is analysed in comparison to the driving fluid forces.

Several tidal current power plants are being planned and constructed in Korea utilizing the strong tidal currents along the west and south coasts. A tidal current reaches 9.7 m on the west coast; there are few potential regions for tidal current power generation. The construction of a dam to store water can prevent the circulation of water, causing a great environmental impact on the coast and estuary. The tidal barrage could produce a large amount of power, but it should be carefully considered. The purpose of developing renewable energies is to minimize the environmental impact and to maximize the utilization of clean energy. To produce a great quantity of power, tidal current farms require the placement of numerous units in the ocean. The power generation is very dependent on the size of the rotor and the incoming flow velocity. Also, the interactions between devices contribute greatly to the production of power. The efficiency of a power farm is estimated to determine the production rate. This paper introduces 3 D interaction problems between rotating rotors, considering the axial, transverse, and diagonal distances between horizontal axis tidal current devices.

A structural monitoring system based on cheap and wireless monitoring system is investigated in this paper. Due to low-cost and low power consumption, micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) is suitable for wireless monitoring and the use of MEMS and wireless communication can reduce system cost and simplify the installation for structural health monitoring. For system identification using wireless MEMS, a finite element (FE) model updating method through correlation with the initial analytical model of the structure to the measured one is used. The system identification using wireless MEMS is evaluated experimentally using a three storey frame model. Identification results are compared to ones using data measured from traditional accelerometers and results indicate that the system identification using wireless MEMS estimates system parameters with reasonable accuracy. Another smart sensor considered in this paper for structural health monitoring is Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) which is a type of piezoelectric material. PZT patches have been applied for the health monitoring of structures owing to their simultaneous sensing/actuating capability. In this paper, the system identification for building structures by using PZT patches functioning as sensor only is presented. The FE model updating method is applied with the experimental data obtained using PZT patches, and the results are compared to ones obtained using wireless MEMS system. Results indicate that sensing by PZT patches yields reliable system identification results even though limited information is available.
To study the stress concentration factors (SCFs) of concrete-filled tubular Y-joints subject to in-plane bending, experiments were used to investigate the hot spot stress distribution along the intersection between chord and brace. Three concrete-filled tubular chords forming Y-joints were tested with different reinforcing components, including doubler-plate, sleeve, and haunch-plate reinforcement. In addition, an unreinforced joint was also tested for comparison. Test results indicate that the three different forms of reinforcement effectively reduce the peak SCFs compared with the unreinforced joint. The current research suggests that the linear extrapolation method can be used for chords, whereas the quadratic extrapolation method must be used for braces. The SCF is effectively reduced and more evenly distributed when the value of the axial compression ratio in the chord is increased. Furthermore, the SCFs obtained from the test results were compared to predictions from some well-established SCF equations. Generally, the predictions from those equations are very consistent for braces, but very conservative for concrete-filled chords.
Based on the literature statistical method, the paper publication status of the isolated working face and the distribution of the rockburst coal mine were obtained. The numerical simulation method is used to study the stress distribution law of working face under different mining range. In addition, based on the similar material simulation test, the overlying strata failure modes and the deformation characteristics of coal pillars during the mining process of the isolated working face with thick-hard key strata are analyzed. The research shows that, under the influence of the key strata, the overlying strata formation above the isolated working face is a long arm T-type spatial structure. With the mining of the isolated working face, a series of damages occur in the coal pillars, causing the key strata to break and inducing the rockburst occurs. Combined with the mechanism of rockburst induced by the dynamic and static combined load, the source of dynamic and static load on the isolated working face is analyzed, and the rockburst monitoring methods and the prevention and control measures are proposed. Through the above research, the occurrence probability of rockburst can be effectively reduced, which is of great significance for the safe mining of deep coal mines.
