The experimental set-up with a 1m long ceramic candle filter of Schumacher(Germany) was built in this work. The dust velocity field around the filter was measured using PDPA. The effects of dust cake layer and dust inlet position on the dust velocity field were also analyzed. It was found that the filtration velocity decreases as the dust cake builds up on the filter. The filtration velocity largely decreases around the filters near the dust inlet since the dust cake develops fast there. The average dust velocity on the filter due to the pressure difference through the filter was measured to be 0.28m/s. More uniform dust velocity field around the filter was obtained when feeding dust in a lower position of the pressure vessel.

The continuous observations for atmospheric aerosol were carried out during 3 years (2009-2011) by using a multi-wavelength Raman lidar at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), Korea ($35.11^{\circ}N$, $126.54^{\circ}E$). The particle depolarization ratios were retrieved from the observations in order to distinguish the Asian dust layer. The vertical information of Asian dust layers were used as input parameter for the Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model for analysis of its backward trajectories. The source regions and transport pathways of the Asian dust layer were identified. The most frequent source region of Asian dust in Korea was Gobi desert during observation period in this study. The statistical analysis on the particle depolarization ratio of Asian dust was conducted according to their transport route in order to retrieve the variation of optical properties of Asian dust during long-range transport. The transport routes were classified into the Asian dust which was transported to observation site directly from the source regions, and the Asian dust which was passed over pollution regions of China. The particle depolarization ratios of Asian dust which were transported via industrial regions of China was ranged 0.07-0.1, whereas, the particle depolarization ratio of Asian dust which was transported directly from the source regions to observation site were comparably higher and ranged 0.11-0.15. It is considered that the pure Asian dust particle from source regions were mixed with pollution particles, which is likely to spherical particle, during transportation so that the values of particle depolarization of Asian dust mixed with pollution was decreased.

This study was conducted to estimate crystalline silica contents in airborne respirable dust from various manufacturing industries and to compare analytical performance of two methods of quantifying crystalline silica, X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Fourie transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). For this study, various manufacturing industries with a history of having pneumoconiosis cases and also known to generate dusts containing crystalline silica were investigated. These industries include: foundry, brick, potteries, concrete, and abrasive material, etc. Both personal and area respirable dust samples were collected using 10 mm, Dorr-Oliver nylon cyclone equipped with 37mm, $5{\mu}m$ pore size, polyvinylchloride (PVC) filters as collection media. In addition, total dust samples were collected side-by-side to the respirable samples. All samples were weighed before and after sampling and were pretreated according to the NIOSH sampling and analytical methods 0500, 7500, and 7602 for dust collection and quartz analysis. In addition, bulk samples were collected and analyzed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) for minerals. In this article, only the results obtained from foundry are reported. The results from various other industries will be published in future articles. The respirable dust concentrations from personal samples by cyclone were $0.46-1.06mg/m^3$ and those from area samples were $0.34-0.73mg/m^3$. Dust concentrations of personal samples were significantly higher than those of area samples. The highest dust concentration was obtained from the personal samples of the finishing operation. Total dust concentration ranged $1.24-3.40mg/m^3$. The mean quartz contents estimated by FTIR and XRD in the personal respirable dust samples were 5.12% and 4.41%, respectively, without significant difference between them. For quartz analyses, the two techniques were highly correlated with $r^2$ ranged 0.803-0.920. But the results by FTIR were mostly higher than those by XRD. In addition, cristobalite was not detected by FTIR. Significant correlations between contents of crystalline silica and such minerals as $Al_2O_3$, CaO, $TiO_2$, and $K_2O$ suggest possible interferences from these minerals.
Fine dust has recently become one of the greatest concerns of Korean people and has been a target of considerable efforts by governments and local governments. In the academic world, many researches have been carried out in relation to fine dust, but the research on the economic field has been relatively few. So we wanted to know how fine dust affects the economy. Big data of PM10 concentration for fine dust and fine dust theme stock price were collected for five years from 2013 to 2017. Regression analysis was performed using the linear regression model, the generalized least squares method. As a result, the change in the fine dust concentration was found to have a effect on the related theme stocks' price. When the fine dust concentration increased compared to the previous day, the fine dust theme stocks' price also showed a tendency to increase. Also, according to the analysis of stock price change from 2013 to 2017 based on fine dust theme stocks, companies with large regression coefficients were changed every year. Among them, the regression coefficients of Monalisa were repeatedly high in 2014, 2015, 2017, Samil Pharmaceutical in 2015, 2016 and 2017, and Welcron in 2016 and 2017, and the companies were judged to be sensitive to the concentration of fine dust. The companies that responded the most in the past 5 years were Wokong, Welcron, Dongsung Pharmaceutical, Samil Pharmaceutical, and Monalisa. If PM2.5 measurement data are accumulated enough, it would be meaningful to compare and analyze PM2.5 concentration with independent variables. In this study, only the fine dust concentration is used as an independent variable. However, it is expected that a more clear and well-explained result can be found by adding appropriate additional variables to increase the explanatory power.

The fine dust generated in the home and restaurant business occupies a low ratio of about 4% of the total fine dust emissions. However, at the foodservice business, the rate of change of the pollutant concentration is very high, so that the temporary fine dust concentration can be measured up to 60 times. The pollutants generated from non-industrial combustion plants consist of particulate fine dust and gaseous organic compounds. To remove these pollutants, cleaning dust collection system, which is an effective system for simultaneous removal of gaseous and particulate matter, is applied. This is a method of increasing the probability of diffusion capture of the Brownian motion by pressurized liquid injection method using the atomizing nozzle. The dust removal efficiency of the fine dust collecting system was analyzed by nozzle spraying air pressure condition and angle using the manufactured fine dust removing system. As a result, it was confirmed that the efficiency of removal of fine dust and gaseous organic compounds was more than 90%. The developed system is expected to be highly usable in the future because it can remove particulate dust from the existing plant hood system without any installation cost.
Agricultural workers are often exposed to high levels of dust during field operations. A systematic exposure assessment of annual task-weighted exposure has not been thoroughly examined. The occupational dust exposure in two wine grape vineyards was measured. Exposure levels to total and respirable dust were determined for a 1-year cycle of work. An operation profile including the frequency of tasks was established. The means of total and respirable dust exposure were $1.08\;mg/m^3$ and $0.07\;mg/m^3$, respectively. Based on the exposure for each task and the task frequency, task-weighted mean exposures to total and respirable dust were estimated as $1.115\;mg/m^3$ and $0.079\;mg/m^3$, respectively. The task-weighted exposure was significantly represented by three operations and could be attributed to the exposure frequency rather than the exposure intensity of operations. The measurement of a few of the most frequent tasks may be an alternative method of estimating task-weighted exposure. Agricultural dust exposure can be significantly reduced by targeting those tasks most important to task-weighted dust exposure.

The contamination of photovoltaic (PV) cells reduces the incidence of sunlight and reduces the power generation output of PV cells. The main factor influencing the contamination of PV cells installed outdoors is the fine dust in the air, but the influence of temperature, humidity, rain and wind can be considered. In this paper, experiments on the contamination of PV cells according to the fine dust density, the temperature and humidity of air were investigated. As results of this study, the contamination area of PV cells increases with contamination time and cumulative fine dust density in the air. The contamination of PV cells increases when the temperature is low and the humidity is high. Also, as the contamination of PV cells is affected to the wind, the deviation of contamination area is happened.
Recently, there has been much research on the effect of fine dust on human body with increasing interest in the fine dust. Thermal power plant, which is considered as one of the main sources of fine dust, is reported to be responsible for 14% of the total amount of domestic fine dust in the Republic of Korea. Therefore, dust collecting devices in the thermal power plant need to be improved. In this study, the electrostatic precipitator (ESP) was considered to substitute for a mist eliminator used in flue gas desulfurization facility. By considering real situation in the flue gas desulfurization facility, the collection efficiency of the ESP was evaluated by using the sprayed limestone slurry particles. The collection efficiency of the ESP was higher than that of the mist eliminator, showing the possibility of replacing the mist eliminator with the ESP in flue gas desulfurization facility.

Background : Ambient particles during Asian dust events are usually less than $10{\mu}m$ in size, and known to be associated with the adverse effects on the general population. There is little evidence linking Asian dust to adverse effects on the airways. In 2002, the authors found that particulate matter during Asian dust events had an effect on the symptoms and pulmonary function of patients with bronchial asthma. An aggravating factor might be that of a viral infection, but this remains unclear. Conversely, it has been speculated that African dust may carry the virus responsible for foot and mouth disease. Asian dust events are also likely to be responsible for transporting viruses, some of which are pathogenic, and common in many environments. Therefore, in this study, air samples were screened for the presence of viruses. Methods : Air samples were collected 20 times each during Asian dust events and under non-dust conditions, for at least 6 hours per sample, using a high volume air sampler (Sibata Model HV500F), with an airflow rate of 500L/min, between April and August 2003, and between April and August 2004. The samples were then screened for the presence of targeted viruses (Influenza A, B, Hog cholera virus, and Aphthovirus) using a polymerase chain reaction method. Results : One Asian dust event occurred between April and August 2003, and 3 between April and August 2004, with a 24 hour average PM10 level of $148.0{\mu}g/m^3$. The 24 hour average PM10 level was $57{\mu}g/m^3$. There was a significant difference in the PM10 concentration between dusty and clear days. No viruses (Influenza virus, Aphthovirus, and Hog cholera virus) were identified in the air samples obtained during the dusty days. Conclusions : Although no virus was detected in this study, further studies will be needed to identify suspected viruses carried during Asian dust events, employing more appropriate virus detection conditions.

Background: Asian dust is known to have harmful effects on the respiratory system. Respiratory conditions are also influenced by environmental conditions regardless of the presence of pollutants. The same pollutant can have different effects on the airway when the air is dry compared with when it is humid. We investigated hospital visits for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma in relation to the environmental conditions. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study using the Korean National Health Insurance Service claims database of patients who visited hospitals in Chuncheon between January 2006 and April 2012. Asian dust, haze, mist, and fog days were determined using reports from the Korea Meteorological Administration. Hospital visits for asthma or COPD on the index days were compared with the comparison days. We used two-way case-crossover techniques with one to two matching. Results: The mean hospital visits for asthma and COPD were $59.37{\pm}34.01$ and $10.04{\pm}6.18$ per day, respectively. Hospital visits for asthma significantly increased at lag0 and lag1 for Asian dust (relative risk [RR], 1.10; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-1.19; p<0.05) and haze (RR, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.06-1.22; p<0.05), but were significantly lower on misty (RR, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.80-0.99; p<0.05) and foggy (RR, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.84-0.93; p<0.05) days than on control days. The hospital visits for COPD also significantly increased on days with Asian dust (RR, 1.29; 95% CI, 1.05-1.59; p<0.05), and were significantly lower at lag4 for foggy days, compared with days without fog (RR, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.75-0.97; p<0.05). Conclusion: Asian dust showed an association with airway diseases and had effects for several days after the exposure. In contrast to Asian dust, mist and fog, which occur in humid air conditions, showed the opposite effects on airway diseases, after adjusting to the pollutants. It would require more research to investigate the effects of various air conditions on airway diseases.
