  • During the homolytic reactions of $CCl_4$ or $Cl_3CBr with ${\beta}-halo^1$-styrenes,$\beta$-haloradicals are key intermediates. They are to be stabilized via three pathways; $\beta$-cleavage, halogen transfer and telomerization. The three reaction paths are delicately controlled by the energetics of their formation and stabilization. When the formation of a $\beta$-haloradical is accompanied by considerable excess of energy from an exothermic reaction, $\beta$ -cleavage is often dominant over the halogen transfer. On the other hand, if the radical forms via a reversible reaction, two processes become competitive. $\beta$-Eliminated bromine atoms from ${\beta}$ -bromoradicals generate $Br_2$ via $Cl_3CBr + {\cdot}Br {\leftrightarrow} Br_2 + {CCl_3}{\cdot}{Br_2}$ may act as a better scavenger than Cl3CBr for the ${\beta}$-bromoradicals. Different reactivities of chlorine, bromine and trichloromethyl radicals towards olefinic pi-bond are clarified in terms of the beat content of the addition reactions.

  • The dissociation kinetics of linear polyaminopolycarboxylate complexes of lanthanide ions (L$n^{3+}: Ce^{3+},\;Eu^{3+}\;and\;Yb^{3+}$) has been studied in an aqueous solution of 0.10 M (NaCl$O_4$) at 25.0${\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$ using Cu(II) ions as a scavenger. The dissociation rates of acid-catalyzed pathway decrease in the order Ln(EPDTA$)^- > Ln(DPOT)^- > In(TMDTA)^- > Ln(MPDTA)^- > Ln(EDTA)^- > Ln(PDTA)^- > Ln(DCTA)^-$ according to the present and literature data. An increase in the N-Ln-N chelate ring from 5 to 6 and substitution of two methyl groups, one ethyl and hydroxyl group on a chelate ring carbon of these ligands leads to a decrease in kinetic stabilities of the complexes. The substitution of one methyl group and cyclohexyl ring on a ring carbon, however, results in a significant increase in the kinetic stability of the resulting $Ln^{3+}$ complexes. Individual reaction steps taking place for each system, with different copper, acetate buffer concentration and pH dependence, are also discussed.

  • This study is performed to investigate the effects of citrus essential oils on melanin production in B16 melanoma cells. Five kinds of citrus essential oils (Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lemon, Mandarin, Petigrain) did not have any influence on DPPH radical scavenger activity, cell growth and cytotoxicity in B16 melanoma cells. Both mandarin and petigrain essential oils dose-dependently inhibited purified tyrosinase activity, but bergamot did not. In 1$\mu$M MSH-stimulated B16 melanoma cells, all of 5 citrus essential oils inhibited melanin production in a dose dependent manner. From the above results, it is possible that citrus essential oils may be developed to be an anti-melanogenesis agent on the basis of their inhibitory effect on MSH-induced melanin production.

  • Reaction of acid chlorides with primary alcohols, secondary alcohols, and aryl alcohols in the presence of a catalytic amount of zinc chloride gave the corresponding esters in high yields, whereas the reaction with tertiary alcohols failed to give the esters due to the fast solvolytic reactions of tertiary alcohols with hydrogen chloride generated from the reaction. The use of molecular sieves as a scavenger for hydrogen chloride was found to be moderately effective in the reaction of mesitoyl chloride with tertiary alcohols. Reaction of acid chlorides with thiols in the presence of zinc chloride in acetonitrile proceeded cleanly, yielding the corresponding thiol esters in high yields.

  • $\beta$-amyloid (A$\beta$) peptide produced from amyloid precursor protein (APP) is a major cause of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Therefore, in early phase of AD, imbalance of the production and the clearance of $A\beta$ is regarded as an important factor to progressive AD presenting senile plaque, a hallmark of AD. In the present study, we wanted to verify whether Rg3 can playa role in helping microglia engulfing $A\beta$ peptides. Validations for the study was conducted by using DiI-Ac-LDL, which attached only on type A macrophage scavenger receptor (MSR-A) and ligands for he receptor, fucoidan. (omitted)

  • ${\beta}Although$ it has been demonstrated that $p2l^{WAFl/Cip1}$, a well known cell cycle inhibitor, could be induced by $TGF-{\beta}$ in a p53-independent manner, the detailed signal transduction pathways still remain poorly understood. In this study, we show that ERK is required for $TGF-{\beta}$ induction of $p21^{WAF1/Cip1}$, but JNK or p38 MAPK is not. ERK activation by $TGF-{\beta}$ significantly attenuated by treatment with ROS scavenger such as NAC or catalase, indicating that ROS, mainly $H_2O_2$, generation by $TGF-{\beta}$ might stimulate ERK signaling pathway to require the induction of $p21^{WAF1/Cip1}$. • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of endurance training and Rooibos-tea treatment during 12 week on lipid peroxidation(MDA), oxidative DNA damage(8-hydroxyguanine), and antioxidant enzymes(SOD, GPX) in human. The subjects were divided into three groups; Train+Rooi, Train, and Rooi groups. The Train+Rooi and Rooi group took 3 g of Rooibos-tea for 12 weeks. Blood samples were taken from antecubital vein at before training, after 6week, and after 12 week training. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA with repeated measures using the SPSS/PC+. The results are summarized as follows: MDA and 8-hydroxyguanine concentration were no significantly differences between group(p>.05). SOD and GPX concentration were significantly increased in Train+Rooi, Rooi group than Train group(p<.05). This results suggested that effects of Rooibos-tea treatment has associated with improve scavenger of antioxidant.

  • This study was designed to investigate the effects of a butanol (BuOH) fraction from an extract of pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb et Zucc.) needles, on oxygen radicals and their scavenger enzymes in the liver membranes of rats. Twenty-eight male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were divided into four groups over a 45 days study period: the control group on a basic diet, and three experimental groups on three different dietary levels of the butanol fraction, specifically 25 mg (BuOH-25), 50 mg (BuOH-50), and 100 mg (BuOH-100) butanol fraction/kg body weight/day, thereby 0.025%, 0.05%, 0.1% of butanol extract of pine needles was added to basil diet respectively. At the end of the experimental period, body weights and food intakes were not different among the four groups. The results showed that cholesterol accumulation in the mitochondria and microsomes of liver cells was significantly inhibited in the BuOH-50 and BuOH-100 groups: by 11.6% and 20.1% in the mitochondria of the BuOH-50 and BuOH-100 groups, respectively; and by 10.5%, and 13.5% in the microsomes of the BuOH-50 and BuOH-100 groups, respectively, compared with the control group. The levels of hydroxyl radicals (.OH) were significantly) lower in the liver mitochondria of the BuOH-50 and BuOH-100 groups (by 13.3% and 18.5%, respectively), while OH radicals were significantly lower in the microsomes or all three experimental groups (by 15.7% in the BuOH-25 group, 20.0% in the BuOH-50 group, and 20.6% in the BuOH-100group), compared with the control group. Superoxide radical (O$_2$) formation was also significantly inhibited in the liver cytosol of both BuOH-50 and BuOH-100 groups; the levels of these radicals were 8.0% lower for the BuOH-50 group and 11.1% lower for the BuOH-100 group, compared to the control group. Copper/Zinc - superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD) activities were significantly increased (by 10.3% and 15.9%, respectively) in the liver cytosols of the BuOH-50 and BuOH-100 groups, but Mn-SOD activities were almost identical in the three RuOH groups, compared with the control group. Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities were significantly increased in the three experimental groups (by 9.0% in the BuOH-25 group, 19.4% in the BuOH-50 group, and by 25.6% in the BuOH-100 group), compared with the control group. These results suggest that the butanol extract of pine needles may play an effective role in attenuating oxygen radicals and activating scavenger enzymes; consequently, aging may be very effectively modulated and/or inhibited.
