  • The effect of surface roughness on mirror scattering has been studied. Five kinds of substrates with different surface roughness were fabricated. On those substrates, a dielectric multi-layer coating with high reflectivity was deposited by ion beam sputtering and electron beam evaporation. A total integrated scattering measurement set-up was built for the evaluation of deposited samples. Most of the ion beam sputtered mirrors showed lower scattering than the electron beam evaporated one, which deposited on substrates similar in surface roughness. Over ~2 $\AA$ in surface roughness, scattering strongly depend on the micro-structure of the super-polished surface. The lowest scattering we have achieved is 2.06 ppm by ion beam sputtering from the substrate with surface roughness of 0.23 $\AA$.

  • In this study, the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells with different thickness of the photelectrode film was simulated by using the electron-diffusion differential model. Through this simulation, the relationships between the thickness of the photoelectrode film and the performances (open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current density, and overall photoelectric-conversion efficiency) of cells were understood and the performances with different thickness of the photoelectrede film were also examined. For considering the refractive index in the liquid electrolyte and exploring the scattering effect of titanium dioxide particles with different sizes using the Mie light-scattering theory, the highest scattering effect of each particles was found out and the optimal size of the titanium dioxide particle was determined for light scattering in the photoelectrode film of dye-sensitized solar cell. Through experiment, the mixed titanium dioxide cell was better than the single titanium dioxide cell and generated a higher overall conversion efficiency because the optimal titanium dioxide particles in the phoelectrode film as light scattering.

  • This study examined the effects of particle size on the light scattering of a nano-sized color filter pigment used to obtain a range of colors in liquid crystal displays. The contrast ratio is one of the most important characteristics of liquid crystal displays. When a color filter is located between two crossed polarizers, the size of the pigment can give rise to a decrease in the contrast ratio due to Rayleigh scattering by the nanoparticles in the filter. The size effect of the color filter pigment on the contrast ratio was investigated in terms of the depolarization parameter. As an experimental result, the depolarization parameter increased with decreasing pigment size. Therefore, a smaller pigment size can reduce light leakage caused by light scattering in the color filter between two crossed polarizers. The depolarization function was also proposed as a useful function for predicting the decrease in the contrast ratio of the color filter.

  • Recently, in designing optical mask such as 4GDRAM, the scattering effect of electromagnetic wave must be considered. For this reason we claculated directly the mask function using the finite difference time domain(FDTD) method. The modification of image theory with this new mask function could explain clearly the scattering effect at the etched side wall of the submicron optical mask. The characteristics of the various type of alternating PSM were investigated. According to the simulation, the dual wet etch process was the most useful fabrication technique to overcoe the light scattering off at the shifted opening.

  • Dust scattering is one of the major problem for the residents living nearby construction field with construction noise and vibration. The dust scattering may inflict a considerable damage to psychological, spiritual discomfort to neighboring peoples. Therefore, the trouble of residents living nearby construction field have been increasing. Nevertheless, in our country, adequate guidelines for the dust scattering are not yet established because of the lack of basic data and insufficient research works. In this point, this study has researched its level of damage by conducting of the interview-survey which utilizing of questionnaire-paper asking for those staffs and workers to answer in the construction field, in order to grasp the damage extent of the actual condition effect and response against scattering dust in construction field. As the result, the occurring rate of dust scattering was appeared high compare with other constructing processes, due to utilization of construction equipment that operating at the fundamental basic construction stage, and it was turned out that presently the proper countermeasure and training against scattering dust in the construction site is insufficient. As for the solution mean against that, it is considered that with the better operation of construction site such as the installation of facilities for occurrence-restraint of dust scattering, frequent sprinkling of water, use of thermostat-covers, as well as those methods to be minimized of the occurrence of dust scattering must be contrived through the education for an attention how to use of construction equipment and training at the site.

  • The ground input motions used for seismic analysis of structures are studied in this paper, The one-dimensional wave propagation theory, the simple transfer function by Elsabee and Morray, and the finite element method that can account for the effect of scattering field, respectively, are used to get the ground input motions, and the results by these methods are compared among others. The responses of structures are also computed by both finite element analysis and elastic half space analysis, using the ground input motions obtained by the different methods mentioned above, and the computed results are analyzed. In addition, the parameteric study Is performed to analyze the effect of the increase of soil stiffness on the response of structures, and on that of the ground input motions. The responses of structures obtained are compared with the results obtained using the Building Code on seismic analysis for structures in Korea. The results of this study show that the ground input motions obtained without considering the effect of scattering field was 2 times larger than those with scattering effect, concluding that the effect of scattering field may not be ignored when obtains the ground input motion.

  • Dot pattern print methods composed of a diffusion film and two prism sheets, have been generally used for backlighting systems of LCDs. However, this methods require complex structures and show high power consumption and optical loss. To improve these disadvantages of conventional backlight units, light guides using highly scattering optical transmissions (HSOT) polymer as scatters, have been introduced. In this study we analyzed multiple scattering effect in light guide by means of Monte carlo simulation based on Mie scattering theory and ray tracing method. As a result it was revealed that scattering intensity depends on the size of scatters. On the other hands, it was shown that scattering efficiency depends on the wavelength of fluorescent lamp as well as the size of scatters.

  • Here we report a nano-sized polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (NPDLC) with an excellent scattering effect due to the maximized Mie scattering. We used a modified emulsification method combined with a limited coalescence mechanism. The fabrication process is simpler to obtain uniform nano-sized droplets rather than the conventional polymerizationinduced phase separation method.

  • Dye sensitized solar cells(DSSCs) have been extensively studied due to their various advantages such as low production cost, colorful design, and eco-friendly process. Long optical path length is one of the most effective method to improve light harvest efficiency for DSSCs. Multi-layered $TiO_2$ nano-structured film with scattering layer has been studied to generate scattering effect by many researchers. It was expected that the difference of refractive index between $TiO_2$ particles and glass frit would generate the light scattering effect and provide the long optical path length. Therefore, to enhance the scattering effect, the frits of $Bi_2O_3-B_2O_3$-ZnO glass system that has the different refractive index were added to $TiO_2$ pastes in this study. First of all, the absorbance and haze factor of $TiO_2$ electrode with dyes and the refractive index of glass frit and $TiO_2$ were measured, respectively. To study the effect of frits, the efficiencies of DSSCs added glass frit and without glass frit were compared. Our results showed slightly higher efficiency with the different absorbance and haze factor of $TiO_2$ and glass frit. It was considered that the light scattering effect would be improved with adding frits to $TiO_2$ paste. Our preliminary studies will be useful for increasing efficiency of DSSCs.

  • The effect of light scattering layers (400 nm, TiO$_2$ particle) of 4 $\mu$m thickness on the dye-sensitized solar cell has been investigated with a 12 $\mu$m thickness of photo-anode (20 nm, TiO$_2$ particle). Two different structures of scattering layers (separated and back) were applied to investigate the light transmitting behaviors and solar cell properties. The light transmittance and cell efficiency significantly improved with inserting scattering layers. The back scattering layer structure had more effective transmitting behavior, but separated scattering layer (center: 2 $\mu$m, back: 2 $\mu$m) structure (9.83% of efficiency) showing higher efficiency (0.6%), short circuit current density (0.26 mA/cm$^2$) and fill factor (0.02). The inserting separating two scattering layers improved the light harvesting, and relatively thin back scattering layer (2 $\mu$m of thickness) minimized interruption of ion diffusion in liquid electrolyte.
