  • This study reports numerically the characteristics of dust scattering around the coal storage pile yards, substantially affected by the windbreak wall height. The dust scattering is closely associated with the frictional effect of wind flows as well as the pressure variation that consequently affect the dust particle behavior. In the present study, with the use of the commercial code of FLUENT, the distribution of wind velocity and pressure are predicted around coal storage pile yard for four different heights of the wind break wall. From the results, it was found that for the case 1 with the outer windbreak wall height of 3 m and inner windbreak wall height of 6 m, the amount of scattering dust for a year was estimated to be 1451 kg, whereas for the case 4 where a height of outer windbreak wall is 10 m and a height of inner windbreak wall is 16 m, the amount of scattering dust for a year was 358 kg. It shows that the dust scattering can be reduced by 75%, indicating important role of windbreak wall height on particle scattering. The numerical results would be useful in decision of the appropriate height of windbreak wall for decreasing the amount of scattering dust under various environmental conditions.

  • The research of OH maser emission sources with high angular resolution is complicated by the effects of interstellar scattering: more over, most of the OH maser sources are located in the galactic plane where the scattering is largest. However, the data available from pulsar studies on the spatial distribution of the amount of scattering indicate that there is a strong non-uniformity in the distribution of the amount of scattering material. There are directions in the galactic plane where the scattering is an order of magnitude higher than the average, as well as directions where the scattering is much lower. The latter provide an opportunity to investigate OH masers with the full angular resolution offered by very long baseline interferometry instruments, like the VLBA, and measure their true angular size, shape and brightness temperature. We have observed approximately 100 OH maser sources, distributed all over the northern hemisphere, with the VLBA in order to study the scattering properties of the interstellar medium.

  • This paper introduces an auto-feeding system to exactly control the feeding time and the amount to cultured fishes in aquaculture industrial field. To reduce expensive costs or labors in this field, it was designed by the concept of controlling feed quantity exactly on the basis of fish's feeding behavior pattern in water tank. A feed control method of this system was developed for controlling feed amount by rotor capacity and motor rotated number. Moreover, a scattering section was selected by rotate way of propeller wing to scatter dried feed to designated site, and then, the diameter of its wing was 250mm and maximum scattering distance was 7.6m for 600rpm. Furthermore, the scattering ways were embodied 2 types such as a simplified way and a multistage shift way looks like a manual scattering. As a results, the multistage shift way is more effective to discharge the dried feed widely than the simple way in the water tank.

  • This study proposes a optimized shape of diffuser profile through investigating the scattering and diffusion characteristics of diffusers. The scattering coefficient according to ISO 17497-1 evaluates uniformity of reverberant sound field of late reflections, while the diffusion coefficient according to AES-4id-2001 evaluates polar response of early reflections. Thus both scattering and diffusion characteristics should contribute to design shape of diffusers to maximize physical performance. To find out design method, the previous results on hemisphere diffusers are reviewed. The frequency characteristics of scattering coefficients depended on the structural height of the diffusers, while amount of scattering coefficients depended on the surface coverage density of the diffusers. However absorptive properties also increased with augment of surface coverage density, thus optimum coverage density should be considered. For the directional diffuser, three types of 2D-diffusers are proposed; semicylinder of h=5mm, semi-truncated cone of h=5-25mm and semicylinder of h=25mm. As results, diffusers with the maximum height of 25mm show the highest scattering coefficients, while diffuser of h=5mm shows high scattering coefficients only at the high-frequency bands. Diffusion coefficient will be investigated for diffusive properties of the early reflection.

  • One of methods to increase the efficiency of a dye-sensitized solar cell(DSC) is the effective usage of the incident light. It can be controlled by using a light scattering layer. The light scattering effect makes that the optical path length of incident light to DSC increases. And then, the photocurrent and the efficiency is increased because of the increase of dye adsorption and the abundant amount of the light. In this study, we apply the light scattering layer to DSC by using two $TiO_2$ pastes that have different particle sizes. As a result, the photocurrent increases and the total efficiency is also increases in the case of using large-sized $TiO_2$ particle as the light scattering layer.

  • The Henyey-Greenstein (H-G) phase function, which is characterized by a single parameter, has been generally used to approximate the realistic dust-scattering phase function in investigating scattering properties of the interstellar dust. Draine (2003) proposed a new analytic phase function with two parameters and showed that the realistic phase function is better represented by his phase function. If the H-G and Draine's phase functions are significantly different, using the H-G phase function in radiative transfer models may lead to wrong conclusions about the dust-scattering properties. Here, we investigate whether the H-G and Draine's phase functions would indeed produce significant differences in radiative transfer calculations for two simple configurations. For the uniformly distributed dust with an illuminating star at the center, no significant difference is found. However, up to ~ 20% of difference is found when the central star is surrounded by a spherical-shell dust medium and the radiation of $\lambda$ < $2000\;{\AA}$ is considered. It would mean that the investigation of dust-scattering properties using the H-G phase function may produce errors of up to ~ 20% depending on the geometry of dust medium and the radiation wavelength. This amount of uncertainty would be, however, unavoidable since the configurations of dust density and radiation sources are only approximately available.

  • In this paper, the glint effect of maritime target to a radar system was analyzed by simulation and field test with a barge and corner reflectors. From the experiment, we proposed a glint measurement method of a real maritime target and it was indicated that the glint effect between the simulation results and real measurement is similar. Also it was founded that the glint effect is related to the relative amount of RCS(Radar Cross Section) difference among major scattering point and minor scattering points. Finally, the experiment showed the glint effects of the rotating barge with some different combinations of scattering points.

  • When a SAR system operates in a full-polarimetic mode, the amount of the information one can extract is so complex that the effective presentation of the information is important. However, the information acquired from the polarimetric SAR data is often difficult to interpret by itself, because it is consisted of both the amplitude information and the phase information. Polarimetric parameters are the good way of representing the polarimetric SAR information in a quantitative manner. Also they can characterize the scattering behavior of the ground scatterer. In this research, extraction of polarimetric parameters, evaluation and interpretation of the scattering behavior of the ground with respect to polarimetric SAR signal are carried out. Using the NASA/JPL AIRSAR data, we estimated the polarimetric parameters and compared them in terms of the ground features. In general, extracted parameters well represent the characteristics of the different features on the ground.

  • The attenuation mechanism of seismic waves in the crust is controlled both by intrinsic absorption and scattering of energy. The amount of scattering and intrinsic energy losses from the total attenuation is separately estimated in this study for the southern Korean Peninsula. The formula to be deduced from the theoretical relationship between single back-scattered coda Q and multiple scattering theory was used to separate the total attenuation into the intrinsic Q and the scattering Q. It was found that the intrinsic Q was considerably lower than that of the scattering Q in the frequency range of 1.5 to 20 Hz. This fact implies that the energy loss caused by the intrinsic absorption is relatively larger than one by the scattering effect within the crust of the southern Korean Peninsula. Both intrinsic and scattering Q values appeared to be comparatively larger than those measured in other seismically active regions except for intrinsic Q in the frequency range of 1.5 to 3 Hz.

  • The volume fraction of the coarse aggregate in the conventional plastic concrete is controlled relatively low to ensure a required workability. In this paper, a new type of coarse aggregate interlocking concrete with strength ranging from C30 to C80 was prepared with scattering-filling aggregate process. The strength of concrete prepared with this method increases obviously whereas the shrinkage decreases significantly, the cement dosage in the concrete decreased 20 % at the same time. The microhardness of the ITZ between the cement paste and scattering-filling aggregate is higher than that of the original aggregate, the ITZ become narrower and tighter also. The interlocking and more even distribution of the coarse aggregate and the water absorption of the addition of extra amount of coarse aggregates contribute to the strength and performance improvement of the concrete prepared with scattering-filling aggregate process.
