Background: To compare the effects of scapular stabilization exercise on the range of motion, pain, and function in the shoulders of women with breast cancer surgery. Methods: Fifteen patients were performed scapular stabilizing training using dumbbells for 30 minutes daily, five times per week for 4 weeks. The range of motion, pain, and function in the shoulder were assessed. Goniometer was used for ROM of shoulder external rotation. Shoulder pain and disability index was used for pain and function of shoulder. Comparison of the pre and post intervention was calculated by a paired t-test. Results: After 4 weeks of training, range of motion, pain and function in the shoulder improved significantly in patients with breast cancer surgery (p<.05). Conclusion: These findings indicate the more favorable effects from scapular stabilization exercise in patients with breast cancer surgery.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare a control group and an experimental group, consisting of arthroscopic shoulder surgery patients who had received acute rehabilitation treatment and who were to perform scapular stabilization exercise. Methods: Sixteen subjects were studied. The control group, n=8, received instruction for basic physical therapy intervention. An experimental group, n=8, received instruction for doing scapular stabilization exercise (protraction, retraction, elevation, depression) 10 times, 6 times per week. To evaluate the effects of exercise, subjects were evaluated using a joint position sense of shoulder (JPS), disability of the arm, shoulder index (DASH), shoulder pain and disability index (SPADI). Results: Participants showed after the intervention, both groups saw their JPS errors at $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$ significantly decrease relative to before the intervention (p<0.05). Both groups saw their JPS rates at $90^{\circ}$ significantly decrease (p<0.05), with no significant changes in JPS at $30^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ (p>0.05). SPADI and DASH significantly decrease after the intervention (p<0.05), with no significant decreases before the intervention (p>0.05). The change rates of SPADI and DASH significantly reduced (p<0.05). Conclusion: Low-intensity scapular stabilization exercise is considered effective as a clinical treatment for arthroscopic shoulder surgery patients who receive acute rehabilitation treatment.
The aims of the current study were to assess reliability of range of motion (ROM) measurement of glenohumeral internal rotation (GIR) with a pressure biofeedback stabilization (PBS) method and to compare the reliability between manual stabilization (MS) and the PBS method. In measurement of pure glenohumeral joint motion, scapular stabilization is necessary. The MS method in GIR ROM measurement was used to restrict scapular motion by pressing the palm of the tester's hand over the subject's clavicle, coracoid process, and humeral head. The PBS method was devised to maintain consistent pressure for scapular stabilization during GIR ROM measurement by using a pressure biofeedback unit. GIR ROM was measured by 2 different stabilization methods in 32 subjects with GIR deficit using a smartphone clinometer application. Repeated measurements were performed in two test sessions by two testers to confirm inter- and intra-rater reliability. After tester A performed measurements in test session 1, tester B's measurements were conducted one hour later on the same day to assess the inter-rater reliability and then tester A performed again measurements in test session 2 for confirming the intra-rater reliability. Intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) (2,1) was applied to assess the inter-rater reliability and ICC (3,1) was applied to determine the intra-rater reliability of the two methods. In the PBS method, the intra-rater reliability was excellent (ICC=.91) and the inter-rater reliability was good (ICC=.84). The inter-rater and intra-rater reliability of the PBS method was higher than in the MS method. The PBS method could regulate manual scapular stabilization pressure in inter- and intra-rater measuring GIR ROM. Results of the current study recommend that the PBS method can provide reliable measurement data on GIR ROM.
This study aimed to determine the usefulness of classifying patients with neck pain on the basis of the results of passive scapular elevation test. We classified 21 patients with neck pain into positive (n=12) and negative (n=9) groups on the basis of passive scapular elevation test; the 2 groups then equally performed scapular stabilization exercise program for 30 min, 3 times a week, for 4 weeks. Visual analogue scale (VAS), neck disability index (NDI), and range of motion (ROM) were recorded both before and after the intervention for both groups. Paired t-test was used to determine that there were significant changes between before and after the intervention, and independent t-test was used for analyzing changes between two groups of dependent variables. After 4 weeks of training, we observed significant decrease in pain and disability (p<.05) and a significant increase in rotation, flexion, extension, and side-bending ROM (p<.05) in both groups. Further, between pre- and post-intervention evaluations, we observed a significant decrease in pain and disability and a significant increase in rotation and flexion ROM in the positive group than in the negative group (p<.05). These results indicate that passive scapular elevation test may be used to identify mechanical disorders of the cervicoscapular muscle in patients with neck pain. Therefore, we recommend the use of passive scapular elevation test to determine appropriate treatment intervention when treating patients with neck pain.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a combination of progressive scapular stabilization exercises, neck and thoracic spine mobilization, and thermoelectric physical therapy on pain, range of motion, muscle strength, and function in patients with acute whiplash injury. Design: A randomized controlled trial design. Methods: A total of 24 subjects were included in this study. They were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n=12) that performed scapular stabilization exercises, neck and thoracic spine mobilization, and physiotherapy, and a control group (n=12) that only performed neck and thoracic spine mobilization and physiotherapy. The pre-test was conducted before the intervention and consisted of a total of 12 treatment sessions of 60 minutes each, three times a week. A posttest was conducted 4 weeks later. Pain, range of motion, muscle strength, and function were assessed before and after intervention. Results: The results of the study showed that there was a significant difference in pain reduction and range of motion and muscle strength improvement in the experimental group, and a significant difference was also found between the experimental group and the control group in terms of functional evaluation. Conclusions: The combination of exercise therapy and joint mobilization technique and physical therapy resulted in greater improvements in pain, range of motion, strength, and function assessment, contributing to improved overall function.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to ascertain the effects of scapular stabilization exercise before rotator cuff surgery on pain and range of motion of middle-aged women. Method : 20 subjects who agreed on this experiment and were diagnosed with rotator cuff rupture participated in this study. Experimental groups were treated while 40 minutes a day, 5 times per week, for 2 weeks before surgery. The effects of scapular stabilization exercise were evaluated on VAS and range of motion. Collected data were analyzed with SPSS for windows ver. 20.0 program. One-way repeated ANOVA was used to examine a significance of each variable by time. Two-way repeated ANOVA was applied to examine a significance of the experimental group against the control group. In all statistical tests, the significance level was set by ${\alpha}=.05$. Result : The results of this study are as follows: 1) In both control and experimental groups, VASs were decreased significantly according to intervention period. There was no significant difference between VASs of two groups. 2) In both control and experimental groups, ROMs of shoulder, flexion, abduction and external rotation were increased significantly according to intervention period. In these three flexibility measurement variables, there were significant differences between ROMs of two groups. Conclusion : In view of all the results in this study, scapular stabilization exercise on before rotator cuff surgery proved to be effective in improving their pain, range of motion after surgery. It will be sufficient data to perform with their own exercise program.
Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of massage, stretching exercise, and scapular stabilization exercise in patients with upper trapezius myofascial pain syndrome (MPS). Methods: Twenty-three female patients with upper trapezius MPS were randomly allocated to three groups: massage, stretching exercise, and scapular stability exercise groups. Therapeutic intervention for all groups included general therapy such as hot pack, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and ultrasound. Patients in the massage group (n=8), stretching group (n=7), and stabilization exercise group (n=8) received their respective therapy program after general therapy for 15 minutes. Therapeutic intervention for each group was performed three times per week for six weeks. All groups were tested four times: prior to the test, at three weeks, at six weeks, and at nine weeks. Results: Pain levels decreased significantly in the stretching and stabilization exercise groups over time (p<.05). The rate of change in pain level was significantly different among all groups (p<.01), and the stability exercise group experienced the lowest pain level. Pressure-pain level increased significantly in the stabilization exercise group over time (p<.05). The rate of change in pressure-pain level was significantly different among all groups (p<.01), and the stability exercise group had the highest pressure-pain level. The level of upper-extremity stability increased significantly in the stability exercise group over time (p<.05). The rate of change in the upper-extremity stabilization level was significantly different among all groups (p<.01), and the stability exercise group had the highest upper-extremity stability level. Conclusions: Scapular stabilization exercises proved to be the most effective therapy for MPS patients.
