  • Studies have shown that the future of the wine market rests on the effective and efficient changes in technology to the supply chain used by most of the major global players. In today's wine industry, companies are faced with the ever-shifting demand for their products, strict regulation and increasing price competition. Even at that, mature companies in the wine industry are succeeding by scaling up production, streamlining their supply chains, expanding into new geographic areas, implementing more efficient processes, cleverly marketing products, and focusing on ever closer relationships with suppliers, partners and customers. However, this paper looks at supply chain challenges in the wine industry from a global perspective presented in the inbound, manufacturing and outbound processes as well as offer effective solutions in order for companies to gain a competitive advantage and succeed on a global level.

  • This paper investigates the aspect-ratio locking of the isoparametric 8-node quadrilateral (QUAD8) element. An important finding is that, if finite element solution is carried out with in exact arithmetic (i.e., with no truncation and round off errors), the locking tendency of the element is completely avoided even for aspect-ratios as high as 100000. The current finite element codes mostly use floating point arithmetic. Thus, they can only avoid this locking for aspect-ratios up to 100 or 1000. A novel method is proposed in the paper to avoid aspect-ratio locking in floating point computations. In this method, the offending terms of the strain-displacement matrix (i.e., $\mathbf{B}$-matrix) are multiplied by suitable scaling factors to avoid ill-conditioning of stiffness matrix. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the method. The examples reveal that aspect-ratio locking is avoided even for aspect-ratios as high as 100000.

  • When asymmetric thermal-hydraulic conditions occur between cold legs, the core inlet temperature will be nonuniform if the coolant is not mixed perfectly in the lower plenum. These uneven core inlet conditions may induce the change in core power distribution. Thus realistic prediction of thermal mixing is important in such abnormal conditions. In this study, reactor internals, which are scaled down as to conserve the flow area ratio, are set up in the model of KORI Unit 1 with the scaling factor of 1/710 by volume and coolant temperatures are measured beneath the lower core plate. Based on experimental results, the ability of COMMIX-1B code to simulate the coolant mixing phenomena in the lower plenum is estimated. The results show that complete mixing never occurs in any conditions and the mixing pattern is characterized according to the plant type.

  • Hot leg break LBLOCA(Large Break LOCA) had a potential to be a containment maximum pressure accident in YGN3&4, which was induced from excessive conservatism in the CE analysis methodology of mass and energy release. This study conducted mass and energy release experiment for the hot leg break LBLOCA during post blowdown with an integral test facility, SNUF(Seoul National University Facility). This facility simulated YGN 3&4 with volume ratio of 1/1140 based on Ishii's three level scaling. Experiment showed that SI(Safety Injection) water refilled cold leg first and core later. SI water was vaporized in the core, which resulted in the repressurization of reactor. This increase of pressure drove the water in cold leg to flow up half height of U tubes. However, since the water was drained back soon, the release through the SG side broken section by evaporation was negligibly small. This study also provided experimental assessment of RELAP5 results by KAERI for the release through the SG side broken section.

  • The specification of surface vegetation is essential for simulating actual evapotranspiration of water resources. The availability of land cover maps based on remotely collected data makes the specification of surface vegetation easier. The spatial resolution of hydrologic models rarely matches the spatial scales of the vegetation data needed, and remotely collected vegetation data often are upscaled up to conform to the hydrologic model scale. In this study, the effects of the grid scale of of surface vegetation on the results of actual evapotranspiration were examined. The results show that the coarser resolution causes larger error in relative terms and that a more realistic description of area-averaged vegetation nature and characteristics needs to be considered when calculating actual evapotranspiration.

  • Porous membranes were prepared via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) of (ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH)/glycerol mixtures. The liquid-liquid (L-L) phase boundaries are shifted to higher temperature when the ethylene contents in EVOH increase. Moreover, the kinetic study proved that the growth of droplets formed by the general liquid-liquid (L-L) phase separation obeyed a power-law scaling relationship in the later stage of spinodal decomposition (SD). A new phase separation mechanism was presented, in which the L-L phase separation could be resulted from the crystallization. The hollow fiber membranes were prepared. The membranes showed asymmetric structures with skin layer near the outer surface, the larger pores just below the skin layer and the smaller pores near the inner surface. The effect of ethylene content (EC) in EVOH, cooling water bath temperature and take-up speed on membrane performance was investigated.

  • It is well accepted that gloss variation deteriorates the print quality and there are various objective ways to measure this. Several studies now have shown that the coefficient of variation in the octave band passed printed gloss image has an excellent correlation with ratings by an expert panel using a magnitude estimation scaling method. The correlation improves when the gloss level is also taken into account beyond that of the COV. There is also evidence that the correlation would improve even more if the gloss spatial distribution could be better accounted for. We show that much (at least 80% and perhaps up to 90%) of the gloss distribution can be accounted for by the paper topography over a wide range of dimensions (scale). Recent work has supported the role that microroughness and multiple surface scattering play in the gloss distribution. This offers the promise of showing that even a greater amount of gloss variationcan be explained by topography.

  • The current method for pavement sign marking operations is labor-intensive and very dangerous due to the exposure of workers to passing traffic. It also requires blocking traffic for a long period of time resulting serious traffic jam. This paper deals with the development of a robotic system for automating the pavement sign painting operations. The robotic system consists of gantry frame equipped with transverse drive rail and automatic paint spray system. The workspace of the gantry robot is extended to one-lane width with the transverse rail system. This research also includes the development of font data structures that contain the shape information of pavement signs, such as Korean letters, English letters and symbols. The robot path is generated with this font data through the procedures of scaling up/down and partitioning the signs to be painted depending on the workspace size.

  • The storage and retrieval of multimedia data is becoming increasingly important in many application areas including record management, video(CCTV) management and Internet of Things (IoT). In these applications, the files containing multimedia that need to be stored and managed is tremendous and constantly scaling. In this paper, we propose a technique to retrieve a very large number of files, in multimedia format, using the Hadoop Framework. Our strategy is based on the management of metadata that describes the characteristic of files that are stored in Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS). The metadata schema is represented in Hbase and looked up using SQL On Hadoop (Hive, Tajo). Both the Hbase, Hive and Tajo are part of the Hadoop Ecosystem. Preliminary experiment on multimedia data files stored in HDFS shows the viability of the proposed strategy.
