  • An external prestressed steel-bar truss unit was developed as a new strengthening technology to enhance the seismic performance of an in-plane masonry wall structure while taking advantage of the benefits of a prestressed system. The presented method consists of six steel bars: two prestressed vertical bars to introduce a prestressing force on the masonry wall, two diagonal bars to resist shear deformation, and two horizontal bars to maintain the configuration. To evaluate the effects of this new technique, four full-scale specimens, including a control specimen, were tested under combined loadings that included constant-gravity axial loads and cyclic lateral loads. The experimental results were analyzed in terms of the shear strength, initial stiffness, dissipated energy, and strain history. The efficiency of the external prestressed steel-bar truss unit was validated. In particular, a retrofitted specimen with an axial load level of 0.024 exhibited a more stable post behavior and higher energy dissipation than a control specimen with an observed complete sliding failure. The four vertical bars of the adjacent retrofitting units created a virtual column, and their strain values did not change until they reached the peak shear strength. The shear capacity of the masonry wall structure with external prestressed steel-bar truss units could be predicted using the model suggested by Yang et al.

  • A non-contact precision measurement system is a theodolite system, a laser tacker and a photogrammetry system etc. Nowadays, the system reaches to a limit of measurement accuracy required from industrial product of middle and large scale. The one of the solutions for this problem is to maximize the accuracy of the existing measurement system. According to it we performed the study far a measurement accuracy of theodolite system when the distance between two theodolites is changed 1m to 5m. We could blow that the changes of distance affect the measurement accuracy of theodolite system and that the maximum measurement accuracy is $\pm$ 0.02 mm on theodolite distance 3∼4 m.

  • Crawling robots are advantageous in overcoming obstacles. These robots have characteristics such as light weight and outstanding mobility. In case of large robots, they have difficulties passing narrow gaps or entering the cave. In this paper, we propose a milli-scale hexapedal robot using 4-bar linkages. Two conditions are necessary to enable efficient walking. In short, the trajectory of the foot must be elliptical, and the lowest point of the foot should be the same. These conditions are satisfied with a novel leg design. The robot has a pair of three legs and the legs are coupled to operate simultaneously. Each set of the legs are installed to robot's both sides and the legs satisfy the equal lowest foot point and elliptical trajectory. As a result, this hexapedal robot can crawl with 0.56m/s speed.

  • The paper presents the analysis and results of traffic measurements in the 155 Mbit/s real working ATM backbone network. The traffic is described as an ordered sequence of real-time cells. In this paper we analyze two timescales in which some form of a stochastic process is taking place: cell scale and burst scale. We present another way to describe the cell flow in ATM networks by definition the function, designed to be the probability of the burst of length ∫in n sequential slots.

  • Firing tests have been performed for a 30 tonf-class full-scale regeneratively cooled combustion chamber. It was the first model which has welded construction of the injection head and the combustion chamber. A number of firing tests have been performed to evaluate combustion efficiency, regenerative cooling performance and durability of the combustor. This paper describes the results of firing tests performed at the design and off-design conditions which correspond to the chamber pressure of 60 bar, 68 bar respectively and the O/F ratio of 2.5 and 2.8 respectively. The data at each test condition have provided successful results in terms of combustion performance, combustion stability and durability. The tests are considered to be quite meaningful in the sense that the technologies for kerosene regeneratively cooled combustion chamber are successfully proven.

  • In this study, two supercritical extraction systems of different scale, analytical-scale and lab-scale, were employed to investigate the extraction efficiency of canola oil from canola seeds using supercritical carbon dioxide ($SCCO_2$) as an extraction solvent. The effects of various parameters such as extraction temperature ($40{\sim}80^{\circ}C$), pressure (200~500 bar), particle size, and $SCCO_2$ flow direction on the extraction rate and yield were examined in detail. Triglycerides and fatty acids in the extracted canola oil were analyzed quantitatively by high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography. The solubility values of canola oil in $SCCO_2$ could be calculated from the experimental results. Similar extraction yields were obtained from both analytical-scale and lab-scale extraction systems. The extraction rates obtained under solvent ($SCCO_2$ ) upflow conditions were found to be higher than those of solvent downflow extraction. However, the effect of $SCCO_2$ flow direction on the extraction yield was observed to be relatively insignificant.

  • Full scale fire suppression test by water mist system were performed in machinery engine room ($20m{\times}15m{\times}10m$) according to IMO MSC/circ. 1165. The K-factor and operating pressure were 2.4 and 80 bar respectively. To assess the prediction capability of numerical simulation, FDS simulation was performed at the same operating condition with the full scale experiment. It was found that FDS simulation had the limitation for the fire extinguishing time prediction but was able to predict the spatial temperature distribution.

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of flexi-bar exercise on shoulder pain, dysfunction, quality of life, and range of motion of women with breast cancer surgery. Methods: A total of 42 female patients who had breast cancer were included in this study. By drawing lots, subjects were divided into a flexi-bar exercise group (FBG, n=21) and a general breast cancer group (GBG, n=18). The effects of flexi-bar exercise on patients were evaluated in terms of the visual analogue scale (VAS), the shoulder pain and disability index (SPADI), the European organization for the research and treatment of cancer quality of life questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30), the breast cancer specific EORTC quality of life questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-BR23), and range of motion (ROM), all of which were measured pre- and post- intervention followed by evaluation. Results: A significant increase was pain, functional disability level, quality of life, ROM within the two groups (p<.01). There were pain, functional disability level, quality of life, ROM post test then invention were significant between the two groups(p<.01). Conclusion: The flexi-bar exercise has a positive treatment effect on breast cancer patients.

  • A bar with periodically nonuniform material properties is selected as a one-dimensional model of a flat-panel speaker. This paper describes a theoretical approach to the bending waves propagating i n the nonuniform bar. The phase speed of the wave is obtained using perturbation techniques for small amplitude, sinusoidal modulation of the flexural rigidity and mass density. It is shown that the wave speed is decreased due to the nonuniformity of the material properties by the amount proportional to the square of the modulation amplitude. The resonance occurring when the wavelength is half of the period of the material properties is analyzed by the method of multiple scales. It is also shown that the wave speed at the resonance mode is decreased by the amount proportional to the modulation amplitude but the wave of this mode does not propagate far enough due to attenuation.

  • This paper presents the results of centrifuge model tests on the reinforced slope by pressure grouting. Tests were performed to investigate the reinforcing effect of grouting. In the tests, slopes of scale factor 1/10 were used changing the space and number of reinforcing bar. Test results are as tile follows; 1. The reinforcing effect increase rapidly with reinforcement area ratio at low value of reinforcement area ratio. 2. At high reinforcement area ratio the increase ratio of reinforcing effect decrease. 3. At same reinforcement area ratio, the reinforcing effect of double reinforcing bar was larger than the single reinforcing bar due to arching effect.
