  • In this paper, we study the unicorn's Landsberg problem from an intrinsic point of view. Precisely, we investigate a coordinate-free proof of Numata's theorem on Landsberg spaces of scalar curvature. In other words, following the pullback approach to Finsler geometry, we prove that all Landsberg spaces of dimension n ≥ 3 of non-zero scalar curvature are Riemannian spaces of constant curvature.

  • We propose two improved scalar multiplication methods on elliptic curves over $F_{{q}^{n}}$ $q= 2^{m}$ using Frobenius expansion. The scalar multiplication of elliptic curves defined over subfield $F_q$ can be sped up by Frobenius expansion. Previous methods are restricted to the case of a small m. However, when m is small, it is hard to find curves having good cryptographic properties. Our methods are suitable for curves defined over medium-sized fields, that is, $10{\leq}m{\leq}20$. These methods are variants of the conventional multiple-base binary (MBB) method combined with the window method. One of our methods is for a polynomial basis representation with software implementation, and the other is for a normal basis representation with hardware implementation. Our software experiment shows that it is about 10% faster than the MBB method, which also uses Frobenius expansion, and about 20% faster than the Montgomery method, which is the fastest general method in polynomial basis implementation.

  • In [6] and [7], we introduced graph von Neumann algebras which are the (groupoid) crossed product algebras of von Neumann algebras and graph groupoids via groupoid actions. We showed that such crossed product algebras have the graph-depending amalgamated reduced free probabilistic properties. In this paper, we will consider a scalar-valued $W^*$-probability on a given graph von Neumann algebra. We show that a diagonal graph $W^*$-probability space (as a scalar-valued $W^*$-probability space) and a graph W¤-probability space (as an amalgamated $W^*$-probability space) are compatible. By this compatibility, we can find the relation between amalgamated free distributions and scalar-valued free distributions on a graph von Neumann algebra. Under this compatibility, we observe the scalar-valued freeness on a graph von Neumann algebra.

  • It is well known that critical points of the total scalar curvature functional S on the space of all smooth Riemannian structures of volume 1 on a compact manifold M are exactly the Einstein metrics. When the domain of S is restricted to the space of constant scalar curvature metrics, there has been a conjecture that a critical point is isometric to a standard sphere. In this paper we investigate the relationship between the first Betti number and stable minimal surfaces, and study the analytic properties of stable minimal surfaces in M for n = 3.

  • The present study is focused on the small scale turbulent mixing processes in the scalar Held. In order to deal with molecular mixing in turbulent flow, the linear eddy model is addressed. In each realization, the molecular mixing term is implemented deterministically, and turbulent stirring is represented by a sequence of instantaneous, statistically independent rearrangement event called by triplet map. The LEM approach is applied with relatively simple conditions. The characteristics of scalar mixing and PDF profiles are addressed in detail.

  • In this paper, efficient quantization methods of line spectrum pairs (LSP) which has good performances and low complexity and memory are proosed for vocoder of mobile communication system. The adaptive quantization method utilizing the ordering property of LSP parameters is used in a scalar quantizer and a vector-scalar hybrid quantizer. The proposed scalar quantization algorithm needs 31 bits/frame to maintain the transparent quality of speech. The improved vector-scalar quantizer achieves an average spectral distortion of 1dB using 26 bits/frame. The proposed methods are evaluated in the channel errors and changed the predictor structure to maintain the robustness to channel errors.

  • In this paper, an efficient quantization method of line spectrum pairs(LSP) with cascaded structure of vector quantizer and scalar quantizer is proposed. First, input LSP parameters is vector-quantized using a codebook a with a moderate number of entries. In the second stage of quantization, the components of residual vector are individually quantized by the scalar quantizer. The utilization of ordering property of LSP parameters and the inclusion of interframe prediction improve the quantizer performance and remove the stability check routine after quantization procedure. The new vector-scalar hybrid quantizer using 26 bits/frame shows a transparent quality of speech that an average spectral distortion is 1 dB and the frame proportion with above 2 dB spectral distortion is less than 2%. The performances of proposed quantization method is evaluated in the transmission errors.

  • In the combustion modeling of non-premixed flames, the mixture fraction conserved scalar approach is widely utilized because reactants are mixed at the molecular level before burning and atomic elements are conserved in chemical reactions. In the mixture fraction approach, combustion process is simplified to a mixing problem and the interaction between chemistry and turbulence could be modelled by many sophisticated combustion models including the flamelet model and CMC. However, most of the mixture fraction approach is restricted to one mixture system. In this study, the flamelet model based on the two-feed system is extended to the multiple fuel-feeding systems by the two mixture fraction conserved scalar approach.

  • Characteristics, such as the support limit and distortions, of minimum mean-squared error (MSE) N-level uniform and nonuniform scalar quantizers are studied for the family of the generalized gamma density functions as N increases. For the study, MSE-optimal scalar quantizers are designed at integer rates from 1 to 16 bits/sample, and their characteristics are compared with corresponding asymptotic formulas. The results show that the support limit formulas are generally accurate. They also show that the distortion of nonuniform quantizers is observed to converge to the Panter-Dite asymptotic constant, whereas the distortion of uniform quantizers exhibits slow or even stagnant convergence to its corresponding Hui-Neuhoff asymptotic constant at the studied rate range, though it may stay at a close proximity to the asymptotic constant for the Rayleigh and Laplacian pdfs. Additional terms in the asymptote result in quite considerable accuracy improvement, making the formulas useful especially when rate is 8 or greater.
