With the increasing usage of cloud applications such as MapReduce and social networking, the amount of data traffic in data center networks continues to grow. Moreover, these appli-cations follow the incast traffic pattern, where a large burst of traffic sent by a number of senders, accumulates simultaneously at the shallow-buffered data center switches. This causes severe packet losses. The currently deployed TCP is custom-tailored for the wide-area Internet. This causes cloud applications to suffer long completion times towing to the packet losses, and hence, results in a poor quality of service. An Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN)-based approach is an attractive solution that conservatively adjusts to the network congestion in advance. This legacy approach, however, lacks scalability in terms of the number of flows. In this paper, we reveal the primary cause of the scalability issue through analysis, and propose a new congestion-control algorithm called FaST. FaST employs a novel, virtual congestion window to conduct fine-grained congestion control that results in improved scalability. Fur-thermore, FaST is easy to deploy since it requires only a few software modifications at the server-side. Through ns-3 simulations, we show that FaST improves the scalability of data center networks compared with the existing approaches.
H.264/SVC provides scalable video streams which consist of a base layer and one or more enhancement layers. Thus, it can efficiently adapt encoded streams to individual network conditions by dropping some layers of bit streams. However, on a dynamic environment such as the Internet, random packet losses due to network congestion can cause drastic effect on SVC quality. To avoid network congestion, the rate of video streams should be adjusted by carefully selecting a layer of each stream. In this paper, we propose three layer selection algorithms which can avoid network congestion by using the rate-distortion characteristics of streams. Simulation results show that FS(Far-Sighted) algorithm can maximize the overall PSNR value of streams by efficiently using the characteristics of video streams.
The differentiated services (DiffServ) is proposed to provide packet level service differentiations in a scalable manner. To provide an end-to-end service differentiation to users having a connection over multiple domains, as well as a flow marker, an intermediate marker is necessary at the edge routers, and it should not be operated at a flow level due to a scalability problem. Due to this operation requirement, the intermediate marker has a fairness problem among the transmission control protocol (TCP) flows since TCP flows have intrinsically unfair throughputs due to the TCP's congestion control algorithm. Moreover, it is very difficult to resolve this problem without individual flow state information such as round trip time (RTT) and sending rate of each flow. In this paper, to resolve this TCP fairness problem of an intermediate marker, we propose a fair scalable marker (FSM) as an intermediate marker which works with a source flow three color marker (sf-TCM) operating as a host source marker. The proposed fair scalable marker improves the fairness among the TCP flows with different RTTs without per-flow management. Through the simulations, we show that the FSM can improve TCP fairness as well as link utilization in multiple domain DiffServ networks.
In Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS), which is an active field of Intelligent Transport System (ITS), information of traffic congestion is sent to each vehicle at real time. However, a centralized navigation system is not realistic to guide millions of vehicles in a megalopolis. Autonomous distributed systems should be more flexible and scalable, and also have a chance to focus on each vehicle´s demand. This paper proposes a sub-optimal route planning mechanism of vehicles in urban areas using the non-network type immune system. Simulation is carried out using a cellular automaton model. This system announces a sub-optimal route to drivers in real time using VICS.
Previous researches on scalability problem of distributed virtual environment (DVE) have been mainly focused on spatial partitioning of area of interest (AOI). Congestion phenomena by avatar groups in AOI have been neglected relatively However, AOI congestion is highly related to scalability of DVE because it exhausts system resources such as network bandwidth and rendering time, and could be a bar to perform collaboration among participants. In this paper, this will be defined as the problem that must be solved for the realization of the scalable DVE, and a model will be proposed to measure and control congestion situation in AOI. The purposes of the proposed model are to prevent high density of participants in AOI, and to protect stable collaboration in DVE. For evaluation of the performance it is compared with a previous method by defining the resource cost model which is dynamically activated to AOI congestion.

We propose a quality guaranteed scalable video streaming service over the Internet using a new rate adaptation algorithm. Because video data requires much more bandwidth rather than other types of service, therefore, quality of video streaming service should be guaranteed while providing friendliness with other service flows over the Internet. To successfully provide this, we propose a framework for providing quality-guaranteed streaming service using two-channel transport layer and rate adaptation of scalable video stream. In this framework, baseline layer for scalable video is transmitted using TCP transport for minimum qualify service. Enhancement layers are delivered using TFRC transport with layer adaptation algorithm. The proposed framework jointly uses the status of playout buffer in the client and the encoding rate of layers in media contents. Therefore, the proposed algorithm can remarkably guarantee minimum quality of streaming service rather than conventional approaches regardless of network congestion and the encoding rate variation of media content.

Advances in VLSI technology have brought us completely new design principles for the high-performance switching fabrics including ATM switches. From a practical point of view, port scalability of ATM switches emerges as an important issue while complexity and performance of the switches have been major issues in the switch design. In this paper, we propose a cost-effective approach to modular ATM switch design which provides the good scalability. Taking advantages of both time-division and space-division switch architectures, we propose a practically implementable large scale ATM switch architecture. We present a scalable shared buffer type switch for a building block and its expansion method. In our design, a large scale ATM switch is realized by interconnecting the proposed shared buffer switches in three stages. We also present an efficient control mechanism of the shared buffers, synchronization method for the switches in each stage, and a flow control between stages. It is believed that the proposed approach will have a significant impact on both improving the ATM switch performance and enhancing the scalability of the switch with a new cost-effective scheme for handling the traffic congestion. We show that the proposed ATM switch provides an excellent performance and that its cell delay characteristic is comparable to output queueing which provides the best performance in cell delay among known approaches.
The existing QoS mechanisms for video streaming are short of the consideration for various user environments and the characteristic of streaming applying programs. In order to overwhelm this problem, studies on the video streaming protocols exploiting scalable video coding (SVC), which provide spatial, temporal, and qualitative scalability in video coding, are progressing actively. However, these protocols also have the problem to deepen network congestion situation, and to lower fairness between other traffics, as they are not equipped with congestion control mechanisms. SVC based streaming protocols also have the problem to overlook the property of videos encoded in SVC, as the protocols transmit the streaming simply by extracting the bitstream which has the maximum bit rate within available bandwidth of a network. To solve these problems, this study suggests TCP-friendly network adaptive SVC streaming(T-NASS) protocol which considers both network status and SVC bitstream property. T-NASS protocol extracts the optimal SVC bitstream by calculating TCP-friendly transmission rate, and by perceiving the network status on the basis of packet loss rate and explicit congestion notification(ECN). Through the performance estimation using an ns-2 network simulator, this study identified T-NASS protocol extracts the optimal bitstream as it uses TCP-friendly transmission property and perceives the network status, and also identified the video image quality transmitted through T-NASS protocol is improved.
In this paper, the authors present a row dynamic route planning by Q-learning. The proposed algorithm is executed in a cellular automation based traffic simulator, which is also newly created. In Vehicle Information and Communication System(VICS), which is an active field of Intelligent Transport System(ITS), information of traffic congestion is sent to each vehicle at real time. However, a centralized navigation system is not realistic to guide millions of vehicles in a megalopolis. Autonomous distributed systems should be more flexible and scalable, and also have a chance to focus on each vehicles demand. In such systems, each vehicle can search an own optimal route. We employ Q-learning of the reinforcement learning method to search an optimal or sub-optimal route, in which route drivers can avoid traffic congestions. We find some applications of the reinforcement learning in the "static" environment, but there are ...

The IEEE 802.17 Resilient Packet Ring Working Group develops standards to support the development and deployment of Resilient Packet Ring networks in Local, Metropolitan, and Wide Area Networks for resilient and efficient transfer of data Packets at rates scalable to many gigabits Per second. It was known that the fairness algorithm of the IEEE 802.17 Resilient Packet Ring suffers from throughput degradation under an unbalanced overload. This Paper proposes a congestion release advertisement method to improve this throughput degradation and discusses its performance. Under the proposed method, a congested node decides whether its congestion is released or not. If released, it advertises the congestion release to upstream nodes, and then upstream nodes transmit their traffic without uy regulation. The proposed method is compatible with the legacy fairness algorithm.
