  • In this paper, we propose a fast encoding algorithm for scalable video encoding without compromising coding performance. Through analysis on multiple motion estimation processes performed at the enhancement layer, we show redundant motion estimations and suggest the condition under which the redundant ones can efficiently be determined without additional memory. Based on the condition, the redundant motion estimation processes are excluded in the proposed algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is faster than the conventional fast encoding method without performance degradation and additional memory.

  • An image scalablity function is noted as technology to embody One Source-Multi-use's Image division by the network Bandwidth and diversification of resolution of reception terminal recently. In MPEG present H.264/MPEG-4 AVC that do to standardization of SVC (Scalable Video Coding) that know go and SVC can offer space time SNR scalability. But, encoding that do scalable usually is known that encoding efficiency drops than encoding that do rain scalable during time and treatise that see. • This paper proposes a fast enhancement layer coding method to reduce computational complexity for Scalable HEVC (SHVC) which is based on High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). The proposed method decreases encoding time by simplifying Rate Distortion Optimization (RDO)for enhancement layers (EL). The simplification is achieved by restricting CU depths based on the correlation of coding unit (CU) depths between adjacent layers and scalability (spatial or quality) of EL. Comparing with the performance of SHM 1.0 software encoder, the proposed method reduces the encoding time by up to 31.5%.

  • In this paper, we introduce a new scanning method for MPEG-4 AVC based Fine Granular Scalable video coding that can significantly improve the subjective picture quality of a decoded scalable video. The proposed scanning method can guarantee the subjectively improved picture qualify of the decoded scalable video by encoding, transmitting and decoding the visually important region most-preferentially. From the simulation results, it has been found that the proposed scanning method can lead the FGS method to achieve significantly improved picture quality, especially on the region of interests.

  • We propose a quality guaranteed scalable video streaming service over the Internet using a new rate adaptation algorithm. Because video data requires much more bandwidth rather than other types of service, therefore, quality of video streaming service should be guaranteed while providing friendliness with other service flows over the Internet. To successfully provide this, we propose a framework for providing quality-guaranteed streaming service using two-channel transport layer and rate adaptation of scalable video stream. In this framework, baseline layer for scalable video is transmitted using TCP transport for minimum qualify service. Enhancement layers are delivered using TFRC transport with layer adaptation algorithm. The proposed framework jointly uses the status of playout buffer in the client and the encoding rate of layers in media contents. Therefore, the proposed algorithm can remarkably guarantee minimum quality of streaming service rather than conventional approaches regardless of network congestion and the encoding rate variation of media content.

  • This paper presents a brief overview of scalable video coding (SVC) with a focus on spatial scalability and its application to Advanced Terrestrial-DMB (AT-DMB). By adopting SVC with two spatial-layers and hierarchical modulation, AT-DMB provides standard definition (SD)-level video while maintaining compatability with the existing CIF-level video. In this paper, we suggest a layer-configuration and coding parameters of SVC which are well suit for an AT-DMB system. In order to reduce extremely large encoding time resulted by an exhaustive search of a macroblock coding mode in spatial scalability, we propose a fast mode decision method which excludes redundant modes in each layer. It utilizes the mode distribution of each layer and their correlations. Experimental results show that a simplified encoding model with the method reduces the computational complexity significantly with negligible coding loss.

  • It is a weak point of the motion estimation technique for video compression that the predicted video encoding algorithm requires higher-order computational complexity. To reduce the computational complexity of encoding algorithms, researchers introduced techniques such as 3D-WT that don't require motion prediction. One of the weakest points of previous 3D-WT studies is that they require too much memory for encoding and too long delay for decoding. In this paper, we propose a technique called `FS (Fast playable and Scalable) 3D-WT' This technique uses a modified Haar wavelet transform algorithm and employs improved encoding algorithm for lower memory and shorter delay requirement. We have executed some tests to compare performance of FS 3D-WT and 3D-V. FS 3D-WT has exhibited the same high compression rate and the same short processing delay as 3D-V has.

  • One of the recent and most significant technical properties can be expressed as "digital convergence," which is helping lead the technical paradigm into a ubiquitous environment. As an initial trial of realizing a ubiquitous environment, the convergence between broadcasting and telecommunication fields is now on the way, where it is required to develop a scalable video coding scheme for one-source and multi-use media. Traditional scalable video coding schemes have, however, limitations for higher stable picture quality especially on the region of interest. Therefore, this paper introduces an adaptive scanning method especially designed for a higher regional-stable picture quality under a ubiquitous video coding environment, which can improve the subjective quality of the decoded video by most-preferentially encoding, transmitting, and decoding the top-priority image information of the region of interest. Thus, the video can be more clearly visible to users. From various simulation results, the proposed scanning method in this paper can achieve an improved subjective picture quality far better than the widely used raster scan order in conventional video coding schemes, especially on the region of interest, and without a significant loss of quality in the left-over region.

  • In the scalable extension of H.264/AVC, spatial scalability is provided residual information as encoding layered spatial resolution between layers. We use the inter-layer prediction to remove this redundancy. In the inter-layer prediction, as the prediction we can use the signal that is the upsampled signal of the lower resolution layer. In this case, coding efficiency can be different from optimal prediction by kinds of interpolation filter. This paper indicates technique to choose the interpolation filter and to enhance coding efficiency for finding more correct prediction in intra macroblock.
