  • Using the sample of 104 mutual savings banks inspected by the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) on June 2011, this study examines if mutual savings banks manage BIS capital adequacy ratio using allowance for bad debts through comparison of BIS capital adequacy ratio before and after the 2011 when mutual savings banks experienced a large-scale restructuring by financial supervisory authorities. We find that mutual savings banks mainly use the allowance for bad debts to manage BIS capital adequacy ratio. It also shows that mutual savings banks with a business suspension order by FSS manage BIS capital adequacy ratio more than the others. Lastly, we find that Non Big4 auditors as well as Big 4 auditors don't effectively audit the use of the allowance for bad debts for mutual savings banks to manage their BIS capital adequacy ratio.

  • Credit capital from customers' savings deposit (CSD) of banks has an important meaning in the business activities of the banking industry. There are many factors that influence the CSD satisfaction with banks. Certain changes have been made when there are fluctuations due to COVID-19. The article is based on an analysis assessing the factors that influence the CSD satisfaction of Vietnamese commercial banks in the context of COVID-19. The authors use a sample of 1,639 CSD. The results show that there are three variables that positively affect CSD satisfaction, including legal provisions of the Central bank (Legal), policies and mechanisms of commercial banks (Policy), and products of commercial banks (Product). Accordingly, in order to contribute to strengthening this capital mobilization of savings deposit, the Central bank of Vietnam needs to play a pivotal role in the regulations of the banking system to ensure its stability; control well monetary policy, interest rates, and inflation to keep a stable position in the economy; and provide timely financial support packages to enhance the confidence of CSD. Moreover, Vietnamese commercial banks need flexible policies and mechanisms to stimulate CSD; strengthen support on deposit rates for CSD; and diversify products to easily adapt to each CSD's situation.

  • Domestic industries are facing the open era as a result of signing the Korea-U.S. FTA with no exception to the financial industry. The FFA between two countries is expected to produce pros and cons for domestic financial industry. Therefore, it is very important to minimize the shock caused by opening our financial market and to adopt the advanced financial tools actively. Signing the Korea-U.S. FTA and enforcing the Integration Law of Capital Market are leading a big crisis to the Savings Banks which have been shrinking under the dramatically changing domestic financial environment since the financial crisis. To cope with financial globalization, Korean Savings Banks are demanded to build up their concrete identity and reposition their status. This is related to shaping the long-term position of domestic financial industry. Therefore, the Savings Banks must take the growth strategy for their survival, and it is an inescapable choice. Several options are available: big scale operation and diversification of business functions, reinforcement of local-focused mediating function of funds, establishment of strategic alliance with other financial firms, reinforcement of risk management system and core competence, nourishment and employment of professional manpower, and active deregulation and policy support. When the Savings Banks are refurbished as an independent local bank performing the central role of local finance, the bright future can be their destiny under the enormously changing global financial environment. Also, two more conditions need to be satisfied: to establish horizontal networks among local banks directed by cooperative Korea Federation of Savings Banks to reverse the weak scale position, and to satisfy their own peculiar niche market with internal countermeasure to face global financial networks.

  • Capital mobilization is a traditional business of commercial banks and is one of the core foundations for the development of a bank. Capital mobilization is the main input in the operation of a bank, and this is also the basis for generating output for credit activities as well as other banking activities. This study aims to determine the main factors that affect the decisions of individual customers to put savings deposit in Vietnamese commercial banks. Survey data collected from 403 individual customers were analyzed to provide evidence. The results from the multiple regression analysis by using SPSS software revealed that all scales in this study were reliable, and there were six components impacting the savings deposit decision of individual customers from the strongest to the weakest in the following order: the form of promotion, bank brand, service quality, interest rate policy, and employee knowledge and attitude. Besides, the finding showed customers who have high income tend to have a stronger decision on savings deposits in commercial banks. The main findings of this article provide some empirical implications for marketers in banks and serve as a suggestion to improve these factors in order to retain and attract individual customers' savings deposit decisions.

  • This study analyzed the determinants of the financial Soundness of savings banks. In particular, empirical analysis was carried out on how the loan deposit ratio correlates with financial soundness after restructuring. As the restructuring of savings banks was finalized in 2014, asset management changed and it is time to analyze the financial characteristics of savings banks. In summary, the relationship between the savings bank lending rate and the NPL ratio is estimated to have a negative value at the 1% significance level. In other words, the higher the mortgage rate, the lower the substandard and below ratio. It can be said that it is not easy for a savings bank to build an aggressive loan portfolio. In other words, the more difficult it is to finance loans through savings deposits, the more likely the risk aversion tends to be. The higher the corporate loan ratio, average interest expense, and economic growth rate, the higher the risk index. The larger the asset size and the higher the loan growth rate, the lower the risk index. Increasing the mortgage rate may reduce risk-seeking behavior, but it does not mean that it is unconditionally positive for savings banks. Therefore, the loan deposit rate regulation should reduce the incentives for excessive asset expansion and manage preemptive soundness through lending portfolio management.

  • Mutual Savings Banks generally have weaker governance structure than other financial institutions, so the possibility of earnings management by owner-largest or managements of mutual savings banks is higher than other financial institutions. This study examines the relationship between corporate governance and quality of internal control of financial reporting. If the expropriation of minority shareholder hypothesis holds, we predict that the larger block shareholder in mutual savings banks, the weaker the internal control system by more likely the opportunistic earnings management by bank managers. On the other hand, under the convergence of interest hypothesis, we predict that the larger block shareholder in mutual savings banks, the stronger the internal control system by reduction in agency costs as owner-manager's holdings increases, and there a negative relationship is expected between internal control weakness and the holdings of the owner-largest shareholder. We find that mutual savings banks with higher owner-largest shareholder equity has significant positive relations with their internal control of financial reporting material weakness. This result suggests that the greater owner-largest shareholder equity, the more likely the opportunistic earnings management, so that decrease quality of internal control. This paper extends the literature on financial institutions corporate governance to verify whether governance system, especially, owner-largest and quality of internal control has significant positive relations.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between the controlling shareholding ratio and the business diversification of savings banks The difference in this study is the analysis of the relationship between the controlling shareholding ratio of the savings bank and the business diversification using panel data. In this study, the semi-annual financial statements for the period 2014-2018 were used on the basis of a sample of 79 saving banks. The research model is analyzed using random effects generalized linear square (GLS) model considering the autocorrelation problem. As a result of the empirical analysis, it is estimated that the relationship between the controlling shareholding ratio of the savings bank and the business diversification is significant (+). This is the result of supporting the hedging hypothesis.

  • Purpose - The purpose of the paper is to empirically investigate the asymmetric adjustment of loan and deposit interest rates among banks and non-bank depository institutions. Design/methodology/approach - We construct a VAR model using time series data comprising loan and deposit interest rates of banks and non-bank depository institutions, along with the call rate. Based on this model, we conduct impulse-response analysis and variance decomposition to investigate the dynamic relationship between the interest rates. Findings - In the case of banks and credit unions, the responses of deposit rates to the call rate are larger than the responses of loan rates, and we cannot find evidence of non-linear responses. In the case of savings banks, the responses of loan rates to the call rate are larger than the responses of deposit rates. The responses of loan rates to a positive call rate shock are statistically significant, while the responses of loan rates to a negative call rate shock are not statistically significant. Research implications or Originality - This study differs from previous research in that it examines the asymmetric response of loan and deposit rates of both banks and non-bank financial institutions to changes in the call rate. The implications for the impact of these findings on the financial system and income inequality are presented.

  • The study provides new empirical evidence on the level of profit efficiency and returns to scale of the Bangladesh banking sector. We employ the Slack-Based Data Envelopment Analysis (SBM-DEA) method to assess the level of profit efficiency of individual banks over the years 2004 to 2011. The empirical findings indicate that the Bangladesh banking sector has exhibited the highest and lowest level of profit efficiency during years 2004 and 2011 respectively. We find that only eight banks have been profit efficient throughout the period under study. The empirical findings seem to suggest that most of the Bangladesh banks have been experiencing economies of scale due to being at less than the optimum size, or diseconomies of scale due to being at more than the optimum size. Thus, decreasing or increasing the scale of production could result in cost savings or efficiencies.
