A magnetic flux saturation model of Synchronous Reluctance Motors (SynRMs) and a parameter estimation method are proposed at standstill. The proposed magnetic flux model includes the nonlinear relationship between the current and the magnetic flux for self-saturation and cross-saturation. Voltage is injected at standstill to estimate the magnetic flux saturation model. Voltages are injected into the d-axis and q-axis to obtain data on self-saturation. Subsequently, voltages are simultaneously injected into the d-q axis to obtain data on cross-saturation. On the basis of the measured current and the calculated magnetic flux, the parameters of the proposed model are estimated using the least square method (LSM). Simulation and experiment were performed on a 1.5-kW SynRM to verify the proposed method. The proposed model can be used to create a high-efficiency operation table, a sensorless algorithm, and a current controller to improve the control performance of a motor.
A phasor estimation algorithm based on the least square curve fitting technique for the distorted secondary current due to current transformer (CT) saturation is proposed. The mathematical form of the secondary current during CT saturation is represented as the scaled primary current with magnetizing current. The information on the scaled primary current is estimated using the least square technique, with the measured secondary current in the saturated section. The proposed method can estimate the phasor of a fundamental frequency component during the saturated period. The performance of the algorithm is validated under various fault and CT conditions using a C400 CT model. A series of performance evaluations shows that the proposed phasor estimation algorithm can estimate the phasor of the fundamental frequency component with high accuracy, regardless of fault conditions and CT characteristics.
The current sensor is used in industrial devices and power utilities. Core materials of these current sensors are divided into mainly two groups as silicon steel and fermalloy. Silicon steel has a wide saturation bandwidth but low sensitivity during low-current, whereas permalloy has a short saturation bandwidth but high sensitivity during low-current. In this paper, laminated silicon steel and permalloy by equal ratio is proposed to improve the linearity and saturation of current sensor. It is proved that the proposed core material has larger bandwidth than fermalloy as well as higher sensitivity than silicon steel. When comparing simulation results by FLUX 3D, the proposed method has also better performance than the previous core materials.
A difference based current transformer (CT) saturation detection algorithm uses the third difference of a secondary current to detect the instants of the beginning/end of saturation. The third difference of a secondary current contains high frequency components when a CT is saturated. Thus, an effect of an anti-aliasing lowpass filter implemented in digital protection relays on the detection algorithm should be studied. This paper describes performance analysis of a lowpass filter on the CT saturation detection algorithm. The cutoff frequency of the lowpass filter is normally set to be half of a sampling frequency. In this Paper, two sampling frequencies of 3,840 (Hz) corresponding to 64 sample/cycle (s/c) and 1,920 (Hz) corresponding to 32 (s/c) are studied; the cutoff frequencies of the lowpass filters are set to be 1,920 (Hz), 960 (Hz) and 960(Hz), 480(Hz), respectively. And the proposed algorithm is verified by experiment. A 2nd order Butterworth filter is designed as a lowpass filter. The test results and experiment results clearly indicate that the saturation detection algorithm successfully detects the instants of the beginning/end of saturation even though a secondary current is filtered by the designed lowpass filters.
This paper analyses magnetic flux saturation of matching transformer considering characteristic of dynamic voltage restorer(DVR) system to solve voltage sags which are considered the dominant disturbances affecting power quality. This DVR consist of PWM inverter to inject arbitrary voltage, LC low pass filter and matching transformer for isolation and grid connection. However, the matching transformer has an excess of inrush current by magnetic flux saturation in the core of transformer. Due to this inrush current, the rating of matching transformers is double for needed nominal rating for protection of DVR. Therefore, in this paper, an advanced modeling method of magnetic flux saturation is used to analyze a magnitude and characteristic of magnetizing current. Simulation and experimental results considering characteristic of DVR system are provided to demonstrate the validity of the proposed analysis method.
During a fault the remanent flux in a current transformer (CT) may cause severe saturation of its core. The resulting distortion in the secondary current could cause the mal-operation of a protection relay. This paper proposes an algorithm for compensating for the errors in the secondary current caused by CT saturation and the remanent flux. The algorithm compensates the distorted current irrespective of the level of the remanent flux. The second-difference function of the current is used to detect when the CT first starts to saturate. The negative value of the second-difference function at the start of saturation, which corresponds to the magnetizing current, is inserted into the magnetization curve to obtain the core flux at the instant. This value is then used as an initial flux to calculate the actual flux of the CT during the course of the fault with the secondary current. The magnetizing current is then estimated using the magnetization curve and the calculated flux value. The compensated secondary current can be estimated by adding the magnetizing current to the secondary current. Test results indicate that the algorithm can accurately compensate a severely distorted secondary current signal.
This paper deals with a control method to reduce the torque ripple of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for electric power steering (EPS) systems. Such an application requires a very low torque ripple in order to maintain a good steering feel. However, because of spatial limitations, it cannot help having a partial saturation in the iron core of the PMSM for an EPS system, and this saturation results in a significant torque ripple. Thus, this paper analyzes the torque ripple caused by the magnetic saturation of a PMSM and proposes a method with respect to inductance measurement to verify the partial saturation. In addition, it is shown that a compensation current is needed in order to minimize the torque ripple when a PMSM is driven in the high torque region. The estimation process of the current and the torque ripple decreased by the current are presented and verified with test results.
A saturation of magnetic flux in the core may occur when a large primary current flows when the iron-cored current transformer is used. This saturation makes the distorted secondary current of the CT. the distorted secondary current may cause the mal-operation or operation time delay of protective relays. CT compensation algorithm using The LSQ(Least Square) fitting method has a problem. It needs to acquire enough data for executing this algorithm without an error. In this paper, an enhanced algorithm using interpolation based LSQ(Least Square) Fitting Method is proposed. The Lagrange Interpolation Method is used for the interpolation and CT is simulated by EMTP. The results show that the proposed algorithm can accurately compensate a distorted secondary current more than existing Algorithm when the saturation severely occurs.
This paper presents an algorithm for detecting current transformer (CT). At the instants of beginning and end of saturation, the increment of the secondary current is reduced significantly, depending on the residual flux and saturation time. Thus, the third difference of the current is used to detect saturation in this paper. If the third difference is less than threshold the CT is at the beginning/end of saturation. The proposed detection method is unaffected by the amount of residual flux. The results of various tests with residual flux from -80% to +80% indicate satisfactory performance of the method.

When a current transformer (CT) is saturated, the wave-shape of the secondary current is distorted and contains points of inflection, which correspond to the start or end of each saturation period. Discontinuity in the first-difference function of the current arises at points of inflection, where the second and third differences convert into pulses that can be used to detect saturation. This paper describes the design and evaluation of a CT saturation detection technique using the third-difference function and includes the countermeasure for a spike signal. Test results clearly demonstrate that the algorithm successfully detects the start and end of each saturation period irrespective of the remanent flux and magnetization inductance in the saturated region. This paper concludes by describing the results of hardware implementation of the algorithm using a DSP.
