  • This study examined the correlation between of self-confidence and satisfaction in maternal role performance among primiparas. The subjects were 144 mothers, who were recruited from four general hospitals in Pusan. The data were collected from May 1. to August 31 in 1997. Self-confidence in ability to cope with tasks of motherhood and mother's satisfaction with motherhood and infant care were measured by the scales developed Lederman and associated(1981). Percentage, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson Correlation Coefficient were obtained by using SPSS program. The results of the study were summarized as follows, 1. The degree of self-confidence in maternal role performance was above average with a mean score of 2.60. 2. The degree of satisfaction in the maternal role performance was above average with a mean score of 3.20. 3. There were positive correlations between the degree of self-confidence and the degree of satisfaction in the maternal role performance(r=.3035, p<.001). In conclusion, since self-confidence in maternal role performance is positively related to maternal satisfaction in the role performance, nursing intervention to improve maternal role performance may lead mother's increased maternal self-confidence and satisfaction in maternal role performance. Futher research is needed to prove the causality.

  • Background: This study investigated the effects of positive psychological capital on the relationship between emotional labor and job satisfaction among dental hygienists. Methods: Data were collected from 296 dental hygienists working at clinical sites in Korea between July 25 and August 15, 2022. Participants were surveyed using structured questionnaires. Statistical analysis was performed using an independent t-test, ANOVA, descriptive statistics, and stepwise multiple regression analysis using SPSS/WIN 21.0. The mediating effect of positive psychological capital on the relationship between emotional labor and job satisfaction was tested using Baron and Kenny's 3-step hierarchical regression analysis. Results: Emotional labor was negatively correlated with positive psychological capital (r=-0.148, p=0.011) and job satisfaction (r=-0.214, p<0.001). Positive psychological capital had a positive correlation with job satisfaction (r=0.441, p<0.001). In addition, the positive psychological capital, had a partial mediating effect (z=-2.472, p=0.013) on the relationship between emotional labor and job satisfaction. Conclusion: Attitudes that reduce emotional labor, which adversely affects job satisfaction, and bolster positive psychological capital are needed.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes and performing confidence, and factors influencing patient safety of dental hygiene students. The questionnaire contained items on the subjects' general characteristics, attitudes, and performing confidence in relation to patient safety. The self-reported questionnaire was administered to 287 dental hygiene students in Gwangju and Jeonnam, Korea from September to November 2017. We performed an independent t-test, one-way ANOVA analysis, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis using IBM SPSS ver. 21.0 software. As a result of differences in attitude, and performing confidence according to the general characteristics, attitude toward patient safety scored 3.48 out of 5 points, and was more positive in students from 4-year colleges, with high major satisfaction, and in students who answered that they needed patient safety education. Performing confidence for patient safety scored 3.57 out of 5 points, and was statistically significantly higher in 4-year college students, with higher major satisfaction, amongst those with experience in patient safety education, and when patient safety education was needed before clinical practice or employment. There were positive correlations between attitude and performing confidence for patient safety. As a result of analyzing the factors influencing attitude and performing confidence for patient safety, attitudes were higher with higher performing confidence and performing confidence had the highest satisfaction rate of the major and patient safety education experience. Therefore, it is necessary to provide systematic education at universities reflecting the characteristics of dental medical institutions, as well as developing various education contents and education methods.

  • Many studies have shown that the parents of developmentally disabled children are adversely affected by the experience of raising a child of this type. However, the range of reactions to parenting a handicapped child is quite varied and is presumably affected by a wide variety of variables. This study examined a number of demographic and psychosocial variables to determine which particular combination could best predict the current level of stress and coping behavior of mothers. Among predictor variables, marital satisfaction and dysfunctional attitude are variables that I am particularly interested in which can mediate parental stress. Five variables are found to be related to the stress of mothers, that is, level of disability, level of needed help, marital satisfaction, type of disability, father's education level. Also variables that affect four different types of stress (which are four factors of QRS-F) are analysed and the results presented. Among these variables, some are pre-determined and some are intervenable. We should make an effort to make changes in those intervenable variables such as marital satisfaction, beliefs and attitude about disability, and level of needed help. In future research we need to search and clarify the beliefs and attitude that help mothers adjust to a life with a disabled child. Also governmental support and policy making to reduce the burden of these mothers should be accompanied as well.
