High-resolution satellite images offer abundance information of the earth surface for remote sensing applications. The information includes geometry, texture and attribute characteristic. The pixel-based image classification can't satisfy high-resolution satellite image's classification precision and produce large data redundancy. Object-oriented information extraction not only depends on spectrum character, but also use geometry and structure information. It can provide an accessible and truly revolutionary approach. Using Beijing Spot 5 high-resolution image and object-oriented classification with the eCognition software, we accomplish the cultures' precise classification. The test areas have five culture types including water, vegetation, road, building and bare lands. We use nearest neighbor classification and appraise the overall classification accuracy. The average of five species reaches 0.90. All of maximum is 1. The standard deviation is less than 0.11. The overall accuracy can reach $95.47\%.$ This method offers a new technology for high-resolution satellite images' available applications in remote sensing culture classification.
Suspended sediment is an important oceanic variable for monitoring changes in coastal environment related to physical and biogeochemical processes. In order to estimate suspended sediment concentration (SSC) from satellite data, we derived SSC coefficients by fitting satellite remote sensing reflectances to in-situ suspended sediment measurements. To collect in-situ suspended sediment, we conducted ship cruises at 16 different locations three times for the periods of Sep.-November 2009 and Jul. 2010 at the passing time of Landsat $ETM_+$. Satellite data and in-situ data measured by spectroradiometers were converted to remote sensing reflectances ($R_{rs}$). Statistical approaches proved that the exponential formula using a single band of $R_{rs}$(565) was the most appropriate equation for the estimation of SSC in this study. Satellite suspended sediment using the newly-derived coefficients showed a good agreement with insitu suspended sediment with an Root Mean Square (RMS) error of 1-3 g/$m^3$. Satellite-observed SSCs tended to be overestimated at shallow depths due to bottom reflection presumably. This implies that the satellite-based SSCs should be carefully understood at the shallow coastal regions. Nevertheless, the satellite-derived SSCs based on the derived SSC coefficients, for the most cases, reasonably coincided with the pattern of in-situ suspended sediment measurements in the study region.

Remote sensing division of satellite technology research center (SaTReC) , Korea advanced institute of science and technology (KAIST) has developed a ground receiving and processing system for high resolution satellite images. The developed system will be adapted and operated to receive, process and distributes images acquired from of the second Korean Multi-purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT-2), which will be launched in 2004. This project had initiated to develop and Koreanize the state-of-the-art technologies for the ground receiving system for high resolution remote sensing images, which range from direct ingestion of image data to the distribution of products through precise image correction. During four years development from Dec. 1998 until Aug. 2002, the system had been verified in various ways including real operation of custom-made systems such as a prototype system for SPOT and a commercialized system for KOMPSAT-1. Currently the system is under customization for installation at KOMPSAT-2 ground station. In this paper, we present accomplished work and future work.

MODIS (MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) onboard the first Earth Observing System (EOS) satellite, Terra, was launched successfully at the end of 1999. The direct broadcast MODIS data has been received and utilized in Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) since february 2001. This study introduces utilizations of this data, especially for the derivation of sea surface temperature (SST). To produce the MODIS SST operationally, we used a simple cloud mask algorithm and MCSST algorithm. By using a simple cloud mask algorithm and by assumption of NOAA daily SST as a true SST, a new set of MCSST coefficients was derived. And we tried to analyze the current NASA's PFSST and new MCSST algorithms by using the collocated buoy observation data. Although the number of collocated data was limited, both algorithms are highly correlated with the buoy SST, but somewhat bigger bias and RMS difference than we expected. And PFSST uniformly underestimated the SST. Through more analyzing the archived and future-received data, we plan to derive better MCSST coefficients and apply to MODIS data of Aqua that is the second EOS satellite. To use the MODIS standard cloud mask algorithm to get better SST coefficients is going to be prepared.
Cloud's properties can be showed on different spectral channel. The 0.65${\mu}$m reflectance is mainly function of cloud optical thickness and reflectance of 1.6${\mu}$m is sensitive to cloud phase and particle size distribution. So we can use multi-spectral information to analysis cloud's microphysical properties.
The satellite remote sensing data is good in order to grasp the wide natural environment. The purpose of study is that it examines spectral reflection characteristic and vegetation index by the utilization of the plant energy ( chlorophyll ) for examining the reliability of satellite data and grasps the transition of the natural environment using the result. According to result of analysis, there were NDVI and mutual relationship on chlorophyll, and luminance compensation of NDVI was effective for all area. In vegetation transition, there were no luminance compensation and relation, and there was a decrease of vegetation in area in south and north. The reason was a result by the artificial and natural effect. This analysis is an effective method in order to confirm the change of specific vegetation.
The land uses of Korean peninsula are very complicated and high-density. Therefore, the image classification using coarse resolution satellite images may not provide good results for the land cover classification. The purpose of this paper is to compare the classification accuracy of visual interpretation with that of digital image classification of satellite remote sensing data such as 20m SPOT and 30m TM. In this study, hybrid classification was used. Classification accuracy was assessed by comparing each classification result with reference data obtained from KOMPSAT-1 EOC imagery, air photos, and field surveys.
The west coast of the Korean Peninsula is famous for its large tidal range (up to 9 m) and vast tidal flats. With comparison the sedimentary environments of open and close tidal flat using remote sensing, we select Kanghwa tidal flat and Hwang-Do tidal flat in Cheonsu Bay. Prior to surface sediment discrimination using remote sensing, sedimentary environments including intertidal OEM, hydraulic condition, and relationship between grain size and various tidal condition are investigated. Remote sensing has the potential to provide synoptic information of intertidal environments. The objectives of this study are: (i) to generate an intertidal digital elevation model (OEM) using the waterline method of Lansat TM/ETM+, (ii) to investigate the tidal channel distribution using texture analysis, and (iii) to analyze the relationship between surface grain size by using in-situ data and intertidal OEM and tidal channel density by using high-resolution satellite data such as IKONOS and Kompsat EOC. The results demonstrate that satellite remote sensing is an efficient and effective tool for a surface sediment discrimination and long term morphologic change estimation in tidal flats.

Diffuse pollution has been considering as a major source of the quality deterioration of water resources. The establishment of riparian vegetation strips or buffers along those areas of water bodies is used to reduce the threat of diffuse pollution. Remote sensing offers a means by which critical areas could be identified, so that subsequent action toward the establishment of riparian zones can be taken. On the behalf of KOMPSAT-2 satellite imagery as a high resolution spatial data, Landsat TM satellite data are used to aquire the land cover for the riparian buffers studied. This investigation aims to assess the riparian buffers established on the upper Geum river as a pollution mitigation. Through comparing the delineation of riparian buffer zones developed with the existing zones established by the government, we can find the critical distortion points of the existing riparian buffer zone.
