  • A Thruster valve operates to supply fuel into thruster chamber. Very quick on-off operation of thruster valve results in unsteady flow of fuel in the propellant supplying system. Then fuel kinetic force, elastic material of propellant line, compressibility of fuel cause the flow field to pulsate. The pressure oscillation arising from resonance would damage the weak part of the thruster valve and other propellant supplying equipment. Pressure drop and fuel flowrate through propellant suppling system were measured, and pressure oscillation were triggered at the thruster valve inlet.

  • The rocket motor of the space launch vehicle offers thrust for satellite to enter into the orbit. Characters of the solid propellant for rocket motors are affected by the space conditions such as vacuum and space radiation. The solid propellant used for such a purpose should not undergo physical, internal ballistic and energetic changes when exposed to vacuum and space radiation. This study describes the development of the solid propellant composition for the rocket motor of the space launch vehicle. Also, experimental study was conducted on supersonic diffuser in order to verify the performance of the solid propellant composition which was applied to standard motor on the ground in the vacuum condition.

  • Aerospace applications use pyrotechnic devices with many different functions. Functional shock, safety, overall system cost issue, and availability of new technologies, however, question the continued use of these mechanisms on aerospace applications. Release device is an important example of a task usually executed by pyrotechnic mechanisms. Many aerospace applications like satellite solar panels deployment or weather balloon separation need a release device. Several incidents, where pyrotechnic mechanisms could be responsible for spacecraft failure, have been encouraging new designs for these devices. The Frangibolt is a non explosive device which comprises a commercially available bolt and a small collar made of shape memory alloy (SMA) that replace conventional explosive bolt systems. This paper presents the modeling and simulation of Frangiblot by the change of bolt size and notch geometry. This analysis may contribute to improve the Frangibolt design.

  • KSLV-I is the 1st Korean satellite launch vehicle, which was launched at Naro space center by Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) in AUG. 2009, and JUN. 2010. Although the missions of 1st and 2nd launch of KSLV-I were not successful, safety of launch vehicle was accomplished through the cooperation with the Russian partner Khrunichev Space Research and Production Center (KhSC). Both parties co-developed the technical safety management program to ensure launch safety. In this paper, the analysis and contents of safety program are illustrated.

  • Ammonium dinitramide (ADN) Low toxicity monopropellant based 1N class thruster and test equipment were developed. Compared with the hydrazine which used in existing satellite thruster, ADN is easy to handle and has excellent physical characteristics such as density and specific impulse. Due to these characteristics, ADN is attracting attention as an eco-friendly propellant. In this paper, 1N class thruster and thrust measurement system was designed for performance testing of ADN monopropellant. The composition of the propellant for the design and experiment was set at 11.2: 25.4: 63.4 for each of Methanol: $H_2O$: ADN.

  • Nowadays, as there is so much interest in environment, hydrogen peroxide attracts attention as an eco-propellant. Hydrogen peroxide is widely used for mono-propellant of thruster, and oxidizer of bi-propellant rocket. Especially, it is used as mono-propellant of the thruster for attitude control of satellite and military weapons. So, the need of long time storage of hydrogen peroxide appears and storage test is required. In this paper, necessity of storage test of hydrogen peroxide and some conditions and methods are introduced. In addition, the results of storage tests under some condition are compared and analyzed.

  • A performance characteristics and application status of liquid-monopropellants used for 3-axis control thrusters are surveyed, in this paper. Hydrogen peroxide was widely used as monopropellant until mid-1960s, but it is rapidly replaced with hydrazine which has better performance of specific impulse, storability, and so on. Hydrazine is mostly employed as a liquid-monopropellant of satellite, interplanetary spacecraft, and space launch vehicle owing to its moderate performance features.

  • The KSLV-II(Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II) which being a successor of the KSLV-I is a space launch vehicle capable of delivering 1.5 ton-class satellite into a low earth orbit. The development of a 75 tonf-class liquid rocket engine(LRE) is planned on the basis of the technologies mastered through the preceded research of a 30 tonf-class LRE. The thrust chamber of the LRE is required to have higher combustion stability, structural integrity and thermal durability. This paper deals with the design requirements of the 75-tonf thrust chamber and a variety of technical considerations which have been conducted analytically in the course of the design for the realization of the requirements.

  • With the advancement in technology, miniaturization, integration, and weight reduction of satellite components have become possible. In this regard, existing medium and large satellites have been replaced by small satellites. As the demand for small satellites increases, the need for micro-thrusters has emerged for precise attitude and position control. A laser ablation micro-thruster, which generates thrust by using ablation jets that offer a wide range of thrusts and low-impulse thrusts, is considered as an alternative for micro-thrusters in small satellites. The objective of the present study is to introduce configurations of the laser ablation micro-thruster and its research trend.
