  • A track type underwater construction robot(URI-R) which can trench on seabed is being developed by Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology. During the underwater trenching work, the robot is exposed high intensive noise and vibration so the underwater localization signal may not be obtained properly by the acoustic tracking system. Therefore it is necessary to research about continuous localization even though the measured position signal comes in intermittently. In this paper, the experiments were carried out on land to simulated the underwater operating environment characteristics. To estimate its position, inertial navigation system and global navigation satellite system are used. The effects of the period variation while localizing is investigated by the experiments, and the application for URI-R is proposed.

  • Numerous research revealed a strong association between the ionospheric perturbations and various natural hazards. The ionospheric measurements from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) observations provide the state of electron contents in the ionosphere that contributes to investigate the source events. In this study, two geophysical events occurred on 23 January 2018, the 7.9 Mw earthquake in Alaska and Kusatsu-Shiranesan volcanic eruption in Japan, are examined to characterize the fingerprint of each event in the ionosphere. Firstly, we extracted the Total Electron Content (TEC) from GNSS measurements, then isolated disturbed wave signatures from the TEC measurements that is referred to as a traveling ionospheric disturbance (TID). As TIDs are short-term ionospheric variations, the major trend of GNSS TEC measurements should be properly removed. We applied a natural neighbor interpolation method together with a leave-one-out cross validation technique for detrending. After detrending the TEC, the remaining signals are further enhanced by applying a band-pass filter and TIDs are detected from them. Finally, the detected TIDs are verified as the response of the ionosphere to Kusatsu-Shiranesan volcanic eruption and Gulf of Alaska earthquake which propagated through the ionosphere with an average velocity of 530 m/s and 724 m/s, respectively. In addition, a coherence analysis is conducted to discriminate between the signatures from a volcanic explosion and an earthquake. The analysis reveals the TID waveforms from each single event are highly correlated, while a low correlation is found between the TIDs from the earthquake and explosion. This study supports the claim that different geophysical events induce the distinctive characteristics of TIDs that are detectable by the ionospheric measurements of GNSS.

  • An area under construction for a living facility collapsed around 12:48 KST on 13 January 2021 in Sa-dong, Ansan-si, Gyeonggi-do. There were no casualties due to the rapid evacuation measure, but part of the temporary retaining facility collapsed, and several cracks occurred in the adjacent road on the south side. This study used the potential of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite for surface property changes that lies in backscattering characteristic to map the collapsed structure. The interferometric SAR technique can make a direct measurement of the decorrelation among different acquisition dates by integrating both amplitude and phase information. The damage proxy map (DPM) technique has been employed using four high-resolution Constellation of Small Satellites for Mediterranean basin Observation (COSMO-SkyMed) data spanning from 2020 to 2021 during ascending observation to analyze the collapse of the construction. DPM relies on the difference of pre- and co-event interferometric coherences to depict anomalous changes that indicate collapsed structure in the study area. The DPMs were displayed in a color scale that indicates an increasingly more significant ground surface change in the area covered by the pixels, depicting the collapsed structure. Therefore, the DPM technique with SAR data can be used for damage assessment with accurate and comprehensive detection after an event. In addition, we classify the amplitude information using support vector machine (SVM) and maximum likelihood classification algorithms. An investigation committee was formed to determine the cause of the collapse of the retaining wall and to suggest technical and institutional measures and alternatives to prevent similar incidents from reoccurring. The report from the committee revealed that the incident was caused by a combination of factors that were not carried out properly.

  • The objective of the paper was to estimate the changes in acreages of tidal flats after the seawall construction at the Asan Bay and the Chunsu Bay from topographic maps, hydrographic charts, and Landsat TM images. The tidal floats from topographic maps published in one year differ significantly from that in the other, which appears to be attributed to the tide levels at the time of photographing. The hydrographic charts showed that tidal flats increase at rates of 22.3 ha/yr at the Asan Bay and 56.6 ha/yr at the Chunsu Bay after the dike construction. Applying the ISODATA method of unsupervised classifications for the Landsat TM images, the tidal flats were identified, and the resulting acreages for each image estimated. The resulting tidal flats increased at the rates of 21.3 ha/yr at the Asan Bay and 47.3 ha/yr at the Chunsu Bay during twelve years after the dike construction. It was found that the rates of the annual increases from the two data are very close and the differences result from the coastal lines at the charts and the TM images.

  • During developing cubesat flight software, Communication test between cubesat and ground station is needed. For this, we have constructed indoor ground station without outdoor antenna for decreasing total cost and time. In this time, if output power of ground station is high, it will affect for cubesat transceiver to be fail. For solving this problem, ground station must be designed for output power of it to be lower than input power of cubesat satellite, and it must be verified. In this paper, first, we describe cubesat indoor ground station using UHF and VHF. Second, we describe output power decreasing test for indoor operation of ground station by attaching attenuators in the end of the output connector.

  • Although the uninhabitable islands are part of national property, those are not systematically managed and controlled in Korea. In this study, the positioning standards for uninhabitable islands are suggested with proper surveying methods. To establish the standards, the current status on managing the uninhabitable islands in foreign countries are investigated and analyzed. It was found that it is necessary to establish the ocean geodetic network based on a sound and systematic plan. In Korea, the ocean geodetic network can be established by combining the National control point and territorial sea control points. We suggested that one or two third or fourth control points are required to be established in total of 2,679 islands with connection to the 47and 249 first and second-order control points. It is expected that this network will provide ground control points for aerial and satellite images for large scale ocean mapping. In addition, close cooperation among the related departments such as Ministry of Construction & Transportation, National Geographic Information Institute, Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs, Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, and Ministry of Environment is necessary for successful management on uninhabitable islands.

  • Currently, 54 kinds of digital maps are provided by National Geographic Information Clearinghouse and the majority of those maps are based on aerial photographs or satellite image. The digital maps which symbolize and simplifies the topography and objects from ortho-photos does not reflect the objects 'shapes and facilities' changes. Especially, underground structures and complex building shapes are not correctly identifies by ortho-photos. Furthermore, the 1/1,000 and 1/500-1/2,500 maps for urban area produced by some local government or public organizations have detailed information with high precision, it is not easy to update the information due to the frequent changes of structures in the city. Although some efforts to solve this problem such as conducting field survey and shorten the survey period were tried, it is not the fundamental solution due to the high cost. Therefore, in this study, a realtime renewal and update of digital map using general survey are suggested. By assigning absolute coordinates to the general survey products and matching with digital maps, it is possible to update the digital map economically and rapidly. In addition, it is suggested that the construction of DB for general survey and sharing among survey companies to solve the duplicated survey.

  • This paper aimed to characterize the spatial and temporal pattern of agricultural drought in Pre-Kharif season using Vegetation Health Index (VHI) and illustrated drought characteristics in Bangladesh during 2001-2015. VHI was calculated from TCI (Temperature Condition Index) and VCI (Vegetation Condition Index) derived from MODIS Terra satellite data, LST (Land Surface Temperature) and EVI (Enhanced Vegetation Index), respectively. The finding showed that all drought-affected areas were experienced by mild, moderate, severe and extreme droughts in several years of Pre-Kharif seasons. Significant drought events were found in the year of 2002 and 2013. On average, Chittagong district covered the largest drought area in all drought stages, and the fraction of drought area was the highest in Sylhet and Rangpur for Pre-Kharif season. Finally, overlaying annual VHI raster maps resulted in that the most vulnerable district to agricultural drought were Sylhet, Rangpur, and Mymensingh in the northern and eastern regions of Bangladesh.
