  • A low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation could be used to provide network coverage for the entire globe. This study considers multi-beam frequency reuse in LEO satellite systems. In such a system, the channel is time-varying due to the fast movement of the satellite. This study proposes an efficient power and bandwidth allocation method that employs two linear machine learning algorithms and take channel conditions and traffic demand (TD) as input. With the aid of a simple linear system, the proposed scheme allows for the optimum allocation of resources under dynamic channel and TD conditions. Additionally, efficient projection schemes are added to the proposed method so that the provided capacity is best approximated to TD when TD exceeds the maximum allowable system capacity. The simulation results show that the proposed method outperforms existing methods.

  • This study analyzes considerations for satellite orbit elements for the national micro-satellite system to effectively perform its mission in accordance with the operational concept, and compares the conventionally used Walker method to improve the performance of the satellite constellation method of the repeating ground track orbit. In satellite orbit element analysis, altitude candidate values of micro-satellite system, use of eccentricity and argument of perigee through frozen orbit, necessity of selection of appropriate orbit inclination, and satellite phasing rules for flying the same repeating ground track orbit are proposed. Based on these analysis results, the superiority of the constellation method of the repeating ground track orbit compared to the Walker method is verified in terms of revisit performance analysis, global coverage characteristics, and orbit consistency.

  • As a multi-mission GEO satellite, COMS system is being developed jointly by KARI, ETRI, KORDI, KMA, and industries from both abroad and domestic. EADS ASRTIUM is the prime contractor for manufacturing the COMS. ETRI is developing the COMS Ka-band payload and SGCS with the fund from MIC. COMS Satellite Ground Control System (SGCS) will be the only system for monitor and control of the satellite in orbit. In order to fulfill the mission operations of the three payloads and spacecraft bus, COMS SGCS performs telemetry reception and processing, satellite tracking and ranging, command generation and transmission, satellite mission planning, flight dynamics operations, and satellite simulation, By the proper functional allocations, COMS SGCS is divided into five subsystems such as TTC, ROS, MPS, FDS, and CSS. In this paper, functional design of the COMS SGCS is described as five subsystems and the interfaces among the subsystems.

  • Any development plan of a Korean space-based navigational system has been neither designed nor introduced yet. However, the demand for the development of a domestic regional satellite navigation system can be originated from the outside of market. The growing dependency on satellite navigational systems in Korea eventually requires the retainment and the operation of a domestic navigational satellite system. There is not many choices on the orbit designs and the system design concepts of a regional augmented navigation satellite system or a regional navigation satellite system for the service on the vicinity of the Korean peninsular. Space situational awareness (SSA) has been a rising issue for both national security and more realistic space business in Korea. Also SSA related technologies in Korea is a newly inaugurated area and is necessary to generate a navigation messages and maintain a future Korean navigation satellite system. In this study, the availability of Japanese Quasi Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) expected to be deployed definitely sooner than Korean counter-part is analyzed. The availability of the similar configured system over Korea is investigated with assumed QZSS type orbit. Also, feasible configuration of orbits for domestic navigation satellite system is suggested. And the observability of a ground-based optical tracking system as a secondary tracking capability is analyzed.

  • Since the generation and transmission of telecommand in satellite monitoring and control system depend on the decisions of operators, it is possible that operators with different levels of knowledge may generate different telecommands in the same situation. Because of this reason, automation technology of satellite operation is being researched and developed to minimize the decision error due to the operator's lack of experience. This paper suggests a method of automated satellite control, which generates telecommands automatically using the knowledge of satellite subsystem engineers or specialists for the ground system. This method provides safe satellite operation and expansion of satellite life time by automatic generation of the telecommands, so that the operator's interrupt is minimized which provides the efficient satellite control.

  • Satellite system experiences severe mechanical loads during the launch period. Therefore, positive margin of safety of the satellite system must be demonstrated for every possible mechanical loading condition during the launch period. This paper presents modal and stress analysis result due to quasi-static loads for the satellite antenna system. The failure tendency for the sandwich construction of the satellite antenna system has been studied with various lamination angles of unidirectional prepreg.

  • Positioning, navigation, and timing information has become a key element in the national core infrastructure and for emerging technologies, such as autonomous driving, lunar exploration, financial systems, and drones. Therefore, the provision of that information by navigation satellite systems is becoming increasingly important. Existing systems such as GPS (Global Positioning System), GLONASS (GLObal NAvigation Satellite System), and BDS (BeiDou Navigation Satellite System) also provide augmentation, safety-of-life, search & rescue and short message communication and authentication services to increase their competitiveness. Those services and the signals generated for their provision have their own purpose and requirements. This article presents an overview of existing or planned satellite navigation satellite system services and signals, aiming to help understand their current status.

  • SBAS(Satellite Based Augmentation System) provides GNSS satellite orbit and clock corrections for positioning accuracy improvement of GNSS users. In this paper, the accuracy of SBAS satellite orbit and clock corrections were analyzed by comparing with the IGS(International GNSS Service) precise ephemeris. The GPS antenna phase center offsets and the P1-C1 bias are considered for the analysis. The correction data of the US WAAS and the Japanese MSAS were analyzed. The analysis results showed that the SBAS satellite orbit and clock corrections are highly correlated. The correction data accuracy depends on the SBAS ground network size and orbit trajectories.

  • In this paper, we present a simple ground receiving station as an educational method for a satellite system. Our system is produced similarly to the existing fixed ground station in terms of function by using satellite communication technology and related software commonly used in the amateur radio field. In addition, we conducted operation test to receive signals from operating satellites and confirmed the possibility of using them as a way to educate satellite systems, such as understanding ground station systems through satellite reception experience and satellite state information acquisition, and further designing satellite systems.

  • UWB(Ultra Wide Band) system can transmits information with low power but it can achieve high transmission rate using broad frequency bands. Using CR(Cognitive Radio) technology, we can use and share frequency efficiently without interfere to satellite communication system. However, passive characteristics of satellite receiver makes it hard to implement. This paper propose additional structure of satellite receiver which add amplifier and antenna to local oscillator. Proposing structure emits satellite receiver's local oscillator signal and UWB terminal detects it by energy detection. We can find out the possibility of co-existence of UWB system and satellite communication system through the simulation result.
