  • The Korean first geostationary meteorological satellite, COMS, will be launched during second half of 2009. For the next meteorological geostationary satellite mission, KARI is now preparing the development process and tools. As one of the endeavor, a software tool is being developed for the analysis and design of geostationary transfer orbit. Generally, these kind of tools should be able to do various analysis works like apogee burn planning, dispersion analysis, ground visibility analysis, and launch window analysis etc. In this presentation, a brief introduction about a design process and analysis software tool development. And simulated calculation results are provided for the geostationary transfer orbit. These software can be used for the next geostationary satellite mission design and development.

  • To extract value-added products from satellite images for the benefit of science and human life, the Satellite Technology Research Center at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology has developed an integrated software 'Valadd-Pro'. In this paper, the 'Valadd-Pro' software is briefly introduced and its main components such as geometric correction, ortho correction and digital elevation model extraction are described. The performances of the 'Valadd-Pro' was assessed on $60km{\times}60km$ SPOT panchromatic images using ground control points from GPS measurements. Also, the height accuracy was measured by comparing our results with the $DTEDs^3$ produced by USGS and the DEM generated from the digitized countours of maps produced by the National Geographic Institute. In geometric correction, the 'Valadd-Pro' software needed fewer ground control points than a commercial software 'P' for the satisfactory results. In ortho correction, the 'Valadd-Pro' software show the similar performance to a commercial software 'P'. In digital elevation model extraction, the 'Valadd-Pro' software is two times more accurate and four times faster than a commercial software 'P'.

  • The real-time reception and recording of down-link mission data from a satellite requires the highest reliability because the data lost in receiving process cannot be recovered. The data receiving and recording system has moved from a set of dedicated hardware and software components to commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components in order to reduce the system cost as well as to upgrade the system easily for handling other satellite data. The use of COTS hardware and middleware components prevents the system developer from correcting or modifying the internal operations of the COTS components, and hence, instant performance degradation of the COTS components which affects the reliable data acquisition must be covered by a software algorithm. This paper introduces the instant performance problem of a COTS data recording device which leads to the data loss in the real-time data reception and recording process. As a result, the requirement of the modification of the conventional data read/write technique is issued. In order to overcome the data loss problem due to the use of COTS components and the conventional software technique, a new algorithm called a software buffering technique is proposed. The experiments show that the application of the proposed technique results in reliable real-time reception and recording of high speed serial data.

  • GPS based orbit determination system for the KOMPSAT-2 has been developed. Two types of orbit determination software such as operational orbit determination and precise orbit determination are designed and implemented. GPS navigation solutions from on-board the satellite are used for the operational orbit determination and raw measurements data such as C/A code pseudo-range and L1 carrier phase for the precise orbit determination. Operational concept, architectural design, software implementation, and performance test are described.

  • In this paper, the modeling and implementation results of the operational test and evaluation tool of the KASS up-link station composed of the GEO(Geostationary Earth Orbit) satellite signal analysis tool model that analyzes the GEO satellite signal and the GEO message analysis tool model that analyzes the GEO satellite navigation message. In addition, we describe the results of software modeling and implementation of some software models of GEO satellite and KASS up-link stations that can generate and provide simulated signals to operational test and evaluation tools of these KASS up-link stations.

  • This paper presents the flight software of KoDSat (KSLV-l Demonstration Satellite) which performs demonstrating the KSLV-l (Korea Space Launch Vehicle-l)'s satellite launch capability. The KoDSat Flight Software executes in a single-processor, multi-function flight computer on the spacecraft, the OBC (On Board Computer). The flight software running on the single processor is responsible for all real-time processing associated with: processor startup and hardware initialization, task scheduling, RS422 handling function, command and data handling including uplink command and down-link telemetry, attitude determination and control, battery state of charge monitoring and control, thermal control processing.

  • This paper demonstrates the in-house development of the subsystem C&DH in a D-SAT satellite project of Astronautic Technology (M) Sdn. Bhd. (ATSB). D-SAT is a non-imaging satellite. It will carry a dosimeter as the payload for scientific objectives. Since one of the D-SAT project establishment intended objectives is to demonstrate the research and development skill of the ATSB engineers on the satellite system building, most of the subsystems of the D-SAT are developed in-house including the C&DH subsystem. C&DH subsystem plays an important role for managing data handling tasks and general operation of the satellite system. The C&DH development includes the research and study on the hardware and software design, the design of both the hardware and software, the development of the software system, the integration between the software and the hardware system and the implementation of the subsystem into the satellite system. This program allows ATSB to accomplish the engineers with expertise not only in the C&DH subsystem but other subsystems too besides developing knowledge in the management of a space project that covers not only on the technical issues but issues relating to the economic, political and legal issues.

  • Change detection is a core function of remote sensing. It can be widely used in public services such as land monitoring, damage assessment from disaster, analysis of city growth, etc. However, it seems that the change detection using satellite imagery has not been fully used in public services. For the person who is in charge of public services, it seems not to be ease to implement the change detection because various functions are combined into it. So, to promote the use of the change detection in public services, the standard, the process and the method for the change detection in public services should be established. And the software which supports that will be very useful. This study aims to promote the use of satellite imagery in public services by building up the change detection process which are suitable for general public services and developing the change detection software to support the process. The software has been developed using ETRI Components for Satellite Image Processing to support the interoperability with other GIS software.

  • This paper covers the development of a highly portable and low cost SPOT image data receiving system. We followed two design approaches. One is the software-based approach by which most of the real-time processing is handled by software. With the complete software-based design, it is simple to add a function for receiving any additional satellite data. Satellite-specific format handlers including error correction, decompression and decryption can easily be accommodated. On the other approach. we used a general hardware platform, IBM-PC and a low cost SCSI RAID (Redundant Away of Independent Disks), and therefore, we can make a low cost system.
