Satellite imageries are at a greatest importance for land cover examining. Numerous studies have been conducted with satellite images and uses semantic segmentation techniques to extract information which has higher altitude viewpoint. The device which is taking these images must employee wireless communication links to send them to receiving ground stations. Wireless communications from a satellite are inevitably affected due to transmission errors. Evidently images which are being transmitted are distorted because of the information loss. Current semantic segmentation techniques are not made for segmenting distorted images. Traditional image enhancement methods have their own limitations when they are used for satellite images enhancement. This paper proposes an auto-encoder based image pre-enhancing method for satellite images. As a distorted satellite images dataset, images received from a real radio transmitter were used. Training process of the proposed auto-encoder was done by letting it learn to produce a proper approximation of the source image which was sent by the image transmitter. Unlike traditional image enhancing methods, the proposed method was able to provide more applicable image to a segmentation model. Results showed that by using the proposed pre-enhancing technique, segmentation results have been greatly improved. Enhancements made to the aerial images are contributed the correct assessment of land resources.
This paper addresses the approach to extract linear features from satellite imagery using an efficient segmentation method. The extraction of linear features from satellite images has been the main concern of many scientists. There is a need to develop a more capable and cost effective method for the Iranian map revision tasks. The conventional approaches for producing, maintaining, and updating GIS map are time consuming and costly process. Hence, this research is intended to investigate how to obtain linear features from SPOT satellite imagery. This was accomplished using a discontinuity-based segmentation technique that encompasses four stages: low level bottom-up, middle level bottom-up, edge thinning and accuracy assessment. The first step is geometric correction and noise removal using suitable operator. The second step includes choosing the appropriate edge detection method, finding its proper threshold and designing the built-up image. The next step is implementing edge thinning method using mathematical morphology technique. Lastly, the geometric accuracy assessment task for feature extraction as well as an assessment for the built-up result has been carried out. Overall, this approach has been applied successfully for linear feature extraction from SPOT image.
Recently, the spatial resolution of earth observation satellites is significantly increased to a few meters. Such high spatial resolution images definitely will provide lots of information for detail-thirsty remote sensing users. However, it is more difficult to develop automated image algorithms for automated image feature extraction and pattern recognition. In this study, we propose a two-stage procedure to extract road information from high resolution satellite images. At first stage, a watershed segmentation technique is developed to classify the image into various regions. Then, a knowledge is built for road and used to extract the road regions. In this study, we use panchromatic and multi-spectral images of the IKONOS satellite as test dataset. The experiment result shows that the proposed technique can generate suitable and meaningful road objects from high spatial resolution satellite images. Apparently, misclassified regions such as parking lots are recognized as road needed further refinement in future research.

Due to the increase of the amount of image data, the demand for searching similar images is continuously increasing. Therefore, many researches about the content-based image retrieval (CBIR) are conducted to search similar images effectively. In CBIR, it uses image contents such as color, shape, and texture for more effective retrieval. However, when we apply CBIR to satellite images which are complex and pose the difficulty in using color information, we can have trouble to get a good retrieval result. Since it is difficult to use color information of satellite images, we need image segmentation to use shape information by separating the shape of an object in a satellite image. However, because satellite images are complex, image segmentation is hard and poor image segmentation results in poor retrieval results. In this paper, we propose a new approach to search similar images without image segmentation for satellite images. To do a similarity search without image segmentation, we define a similarity of an image by considering SIFT keypoint descriptors which doesn't require image segmentation. Experimental results show that the proposed approach more effectively searches similar satellite images which are complex and pose the difficulty in using color information.
Image segmentation techniques becoming increasingly important in the field of remote sensing image analysis in areas such as object oriented image classification. This paper presents a new method for image segmentation in High Resolution Remote Sensing Image based on Seeded Region Growing (SRG) and Edge Information. Firstly, multi-spectral edge detection was done using an entropy operator in pan-sharpened QuickBird imagery. Then, the initial seeds were automatically selected from the obtained edge map. After automatic selection of significant seeds, an initial segmentation was achieved by applying SRG. Finally the region merging process, using region adjacency graph (RAG), was carried out to get the final segmentation result. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method has good potential for application in the segmentation of high resolution satellite images.
Building segmentation using satellite imagery such as EO (Electro-Optical) and SAR (Synthetic-Aperture Radar) images are widely used due to their various uses. EO images have the advantage of having color information, and they are noise-free. In contrast, SAR images can identify the physical characteristics and geometrical information that the EO image cannot capture. This paper proposes a learning framework for efficient building segmentation that consists of a teacher-student-based privileged knowledge distillation and deformable convolution block. The teacher network utilizes EO and SAR images simultaneously to produce richer features and provide them to the student network, while the student network only uses EO images. To do this, we present objective functions that consist of Kullback-Leibler divergence loss and knowledge distillation loss. Furthermore, we introduce deformable convolution to avoid pixel-level noise and efficiently capture hard samples such as small and thin buildings at the global level. Experimental result shows that our method outperforms other methods and efficiently captures complex samples such as a small or narrow building. Moreover, Since our method can be applied to various methods.
In this paper, we proposed a method extracting an object from background of the satellite image. The image segmentation techniques have been widely studied for the technology to segment image and to synthesis segment object with other images. Proposed algorithm is to perform the edge detection of a selected object using genetic algorithm. We segment region of object based on detection edge using watershed algorithm. We separated background and object in indefinite region using gradual region merge from segment object. And, we make GUI for the application of the proposed algorithm to various tests. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, several analysis on the satellite images are performed.

In this study, for efficient replacemen of sensor modelling of high-resolution satellite imagery, image segmentation method is applied to the test area of the SPOT-3 satellite imagery. After that, a third-order polynomial model in the sectioned area is compared with the RFM which is to the entire in the test area. As results, plane error of the third-order polynomial model is lower(approximately 0.8m) than that of RFM. On the other hand, height error of RFM is lower(approximately 1.0m).

Image segmentation technique is becoming increasingly important in the field of remote sensing image analysis in areas such as object oriented image classification to extract object regions of interest within images. This paper presents a new method for image segmentation in High Resolution Remote Sensing Image based on Improved Seeded Region Growing (ISRG) and Region merging. Firstly, multi-spectral edge detection was done using an entropy operator in pan-sharpened QuickBird imagery. Then, the initial seeds were automatically selected from the obtained multi-spectral edge map. After automatic selection of significant seeds, an initial segmentation was achieved by applying ISRG to consider spectral and edge information. Finally the region merging process, integrating region texture and spectral information, was carried out to get the final segmentation result. The accuracy assesment was done using the unsupervised objective evaluation method for evaluating the effectiveness of the proposed method. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method has good potential for application in the segmentation of high resolution satellite images.
This research aimed to develop forest type classification technique for the mixed forest with coniferous and broad-leaved species using the high resolution satellite data. QuickBird data was used as satellite data. The method of this research was to extract satellite data for every single tree crown using image segmentation technique, then to evaluate the accuracy of classification by changing grouping criteria such as tree species, families, coniferous or broad-leaved species, and timber prices. As a result, the classification of tree species and families level was inaccurate, on the other hand, coniferous or broad-leaved species and timber price level was high accurate.
