  • Integration analysis of multi-sensor satellite images is becoming increasingly important. The first step in integration analysis is image registration between multi-sensor. SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) is a representative image registration method. However, optical image and SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images are different from sensor attitude and radiation characteristics during acquisition, making it difficult to apply the conventional method, such as SIFT, because the radiometric characteristics between images are nonlinear. To overcome this limitation, we proposed a modified method that combines the SAR-SIFT method and shape descriptor vector DLSS(Dense Local Self-Similarity). We conducted an experiment using two pairs of Cosmo-SkyMed and KOMPSAT-2 images collected over Daejeon, Korea, an area with a high density of buildings. The proposed method extracted the correct matching points when compared to conventional methods, such as SIFT and SAR-SIFT. The method also gave quantitatively reasonable results for RMSE of 1.66m and 2.45m over the two pairs of images.

  • Measurement and analysis results of the extracted radiation-patterns from the field-experiments which were conducted to acquire the generic technology for calibration and validation of the satellite SAR system(Synthetic Aperture Radar) are presented in this study. Prototype of active transponder is adjustable within maximum 63.1 dBsm of RCS (Radar Cross Section) and includes the receiving-function with external receiver. To increase an accuracy of these field experiments, we repetitively measured satellite SAR systems of the same operating mode(i.e., COSMO-SkyMed No. 2 & 3, hh-pol., strip-map himage mode, 3 m resolution). Then, the reliability of experimental results was cross-checked through analysis of the RCS of active transponder on SAR image. The property of azimuth radiation patterns of satellite SAR system extracted from them has $0.352^{\circ}$ of HPBW(half-power beamwidth), $0.691^{\circ}$ of FNBW(first-null beamwidth), and 11.17 dB of PSLR(peak to side lobe ratio), respectively.

  • We analyzed the feasibility of detecting wave gliders moving on the sea surface using SAR images. For the experiment, a model was constructed and placed on the sea using a towing ship before and after the satellite observation time. In the acquisition of KOMPSAT-5 image, high resolution SAR data of spotlight mode was collected considering the small size of wave glider. As a result of the backscattering intensity analysis around the towing ship along with wave glider, several scattering points away from the ship were observed, which are not strong but clearly distinguished from the surrounding clutter values. Considering the distance from the center of the ship, it seems to be a signal by the wave glider. On the other hand, it is confirmed that the wave glider can be detected even at the very low false alarm rate ($10^{-6}$) of the target detection using CFAR. Although the scatter signal by the wave glider could be distinguished from the surrounding ocean clutter in the high resolution SAR image, further research is needed to determine if actual wave gliders are detected in various marine environments.

  • Recently, as the number of high-resolution satellite SAR images increases, the demand for precise matching of SAR imagesin change detection and image fusion is consistently increasing. RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) values using GCPs (Ground Control Points) selected by analysts have been widely used for quantitative evaluation of image registration results, while it is difficult to find an approach for automatically measuring the registration accuracy. In this study, a feasibility analysis was conducted on using the FSIM (Feature Similarity) index as a measure to evaluate the registration accuracy. TerraSAR-X (TSX) staring spotlight data collected from various incidence angles and orbit directions were used for the analysis. FSIM was almost independent on the spatial resolution of the SAR image. Using a single SAR image, the FSIM with respect to registration errors was analyzed, then use it to compare with the value estimated from TSX data with different imaging geometry. FSIM index slightly decreased due to the differencesin imaging geometry such as different look angles, different orbit tracks. As the result of analyzing the FSIM value by land cover type, the change in the FSIM index according to the co-registration error was most evident in the urban area. Therefore, the FSIM index calculated in the urban was mostsuitable for determining the accuracy of image registration. It islikely that the FSIM index has sufficient potential to be used as an index for the co-registration accuracy of SAR image.

  • If we use the microwave of SAR, we can observe ocean in spite of severe weather or night time. The sea surface image of SAR has numerous information about atmospheric phenomena related to surface wind field. The extracted wind information from SAR can be used diversely. In order to extract sea wind speed from SAR image, a generated wind direction from SAR and sigma nought should be input into wind model. Therefore, wind speed can be obtained by input wind direction into CMOD5 Model. Azimuth angle using CMOD5 Model is generated by added $90^{\circ}$ to Look angle which is extracted from SAR data file. A gained wind direction spectrum from SAR image has $180^{\circ}$ ambiguity because of 2D-FFT. This ambiguity should decide to use the location of land, wind direction in field or the result of numerical model. Consequently, wind direction using 2D-FFT is $3^{\circ}{\sim}7^{\circ}$ differences with actual surveying data. Wind speed by CMOD5 model is similar to actual surveying data as below 2m/s.

  • Subsurface Internal Waves(IWs) can be detected in satellite images as periodic alternating brighter/darker stripes. It is known that there are two types of IWs-depression type and elevation type-depending on the water depth in stratified oceans. In this study, we have quantitatively verified the process of converting polarity from depression waves to elevation waves using ERS-2 SAR image acquired over the northern South China Sea. We simulated the evolution of IWs near a turning point with a numerical model for internal wave propagation. The simulation results near the turning point clearly showed us not only a conversion process of IWs from depression to elevation waves, but also a similar wave pattern with the observed SAR image. We also simulated SAR intensity variation near the turning point. The upper layer currents were computed at regular intervals using the numerical model, as the IWs were passing through the turning point. Then, an integrated hydrodynamic-electromagnetic model was used for simulating SAR intensity profiles from the upper layer currents. The simulated SAR intensity profiles were compared with the observed SAR intensities.
