  • The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission(TRMM) Satellite was launched in November 1997, carrying into orbit the first space-borne Precipitation Radar(PR). The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between TRMM/PR and AWS raingage data, and test the possibility to apply storm runoff prediction. Four TRMM/PR data in 1999 for Yongdam watershed was adopted and made a simple linear regression equation using AWS data. By using the equation, the storm runoff was estimated with the adjusted rainfall. TRMM/PR rainfall and runoff was overall underestimated by the carry-over effect of rainfall error and SCS-CN value selection.

  • In this study, the GPM (Global Precipitation Mission) IMERG (Integrated Multi-satellitE retrievals for GPM) rainfall data was verified and evaluated using ground AWS (Automated Weather Station) and radar in order to investigate the availability of GPM IMERG rainfall data. The SPI (Standardized Precipitation Index) was calculated based on the GPM IMERG data and also compared with the results obtained from the ground observation data for the Hoengseong Dam and Yongdam Dam areas. For the radar data, 1.5 km CAPPI rainfall data with a resolution of 10 km and 30 minutes was generated by applying the Z-R relationship ($Z=200R^{1.6}$) and used for accuracy verification. In order to calculate the SPI, PERSIANN_CDR and TRMM 3B42 were used for the period prior to the GPM IMERG data availability range. As a result of latency verification, it was confirmed that the performance is relatively higher than that of the early run mode in the late run mode. The GPM IMERG rainfall data has a high accuracy for 20 mm/h or more rainfall as a result of the comparison with the ground rainfall data. The analysis of the time scale of the SPI based on GPM IMERG and changes in normal annual precipitation adequately showed the effect of short term rainfall cases on local drought relief. In addition, the correlation coefficient and the determination coefficient were 0.83, 0.914, 0.689 and 0.835, respectively, between the SPI based GPM IMERG and the ground observation data. Therefore, it can be used as a predictive factor through the time series prediction model. We confirmed the hydrological utilization and the possibility of real time drought monitoring using SPI based on GPM IMERG rainfall, even though results presented in this study were limited to some rainfall cases.

  • Korea has a terrain vulnerable to drought due to the concentration of precipitation in summer and the large amount of groundwater discharge. Quantified drought indices are used to determine these droughts. Among these, drought index is mainly used for analysis of precipitation, and recently, researches have been conducted to monitor drought using satellite images. In this study, we used the KOMPSAT-2/3 image to calculate the water surface area and compare with the drought index in order to monitor the drought in the Upper Soyang River. As a result, it was confirmed that the tendency of the water surface area change and the trend of the drought index were similar in the satellite images. Future research could be used as a basis for judging drought.

  • It has long been known that the magnetospheric particles can precipitate into the atmosphere of the Earth. In this paper we examine such precipitation of energetic electrons using the data obtained from low-altitude polar orbiting satellite observations. We analyze the precipitating electron flux data for many periods selected from a total of 84 storm events identified for 2001-2012. The analysis includes the dependence of precipitation on the Kp index and the electron energy, for which we use three energies E1 > 30 keV, E2 > 100 keV, E3 > 300 keV. We find that the precipitation is best correlated with Kp after a time delay of < 3 hours. Most importantly, the correlation with Kp is notably tighter for lower energy than for higher energy in the sense that the lower energy precipitation flux increases more rapidly with Kp than does the higher energy precipitation flux. Based on this we suggest that the Kp index reflects excitation of a wave that is responsible for scattering of preferably lower energy electrons. The role of waves of other types should become increasingly important for higher energy, for which we suggest to rely on other indicators than Kp if one can identify such an indicator.

  • This paper presents the results of research and analysis with the satellite-derived snow data. It provides the main climatic characteristics of snow cover in China and shows the variation and distribution of snow in regions of Xinjiang, Inter Mongolia and Tibet plateau. The study reveals the vicissitude periods of winter snow cover in Tibetan Plateau by using wavelet analysis with the data from 1980 to 2001. It has about 10 years large period and 3-5 years small period. The analysis shows that the extension of snow increased in recent years in Xinjiang. The results of analysis proves the relationship between winter snow cover in Tibetan Plateau and next summer precipitation in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. They have good correlation.

  • It was studied the relationship between the red tide occurrence and the meteorological factors, and the satellite monitoring for red tide. From 1990 through 2001, the red tide continuously appeared and the number of red tide occurrence increased every year. A common condition for the red tide occurrence was heavy precipitation 2${\sim}$4 days earlier, and the favorable conditions for the red tide formation were high air temperature, proper sunshine and light winds for the day in red tide occurrence. From satellite images, it was possible to monitor the spatial distributions and concentrations of red tide.

  • This study analyzed the applications of near real-time drought monitoring using satellite rainfall for the Korean Peninsula and un-gaged basins. We used AWS data of Yongdam-Dam, Hoengseong-Dam in Korea area, the meteorological station of Nakhon Rachasima, Pak chong for test-bed to evaluate the validation and the opportunity for un-gaged basins. In addition, we calculated EDI (Effective doought index) using the stations and co-located PERSIANN-CDR, TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission) TMPA (The TRMM Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis), GPM IMERG (the integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM) rainfall data and compared the EDI-based station data with satellite data for applications of drought monitoring. The results showed that the correlation coefficient and the determination coefficient were 0.830 and 0.914 in Yongdam-dam, and 0.689 and 0.835 in Hoengseng-Dam respectively. Also, the correlation coefficient were 0.830, 0.914 from TRMM TMPA datasets and compasion with 0.660, 0.660 based on PERSIANN-CDR and TRMM data in nakhon and pakchong station. Our results were confirmed possibility of near real-time drought monitoring using EDI with daily satellite rainfall for un-gaged basins.

  • North Korea has frequently suffered from extreme agricultural crop droughts, which have led to food shortages, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The increasing frequency of extreme droughts, due to global warming and climate change, has increased the importance of enhancing the national capacity for drought management. Historically, a meteorological drought index based on data collected from weather stations has been widely used. But it has limitations in terms of the distribution of weather stations and the spatial pattern of drought impacts. Satellite-based data can be obtained with the same accuracy and at regular intervals, and is useful for long-term change analysis and environmental monitoring and wide area access in time and space. The Evaporative Stress Index (ESI), a satellite-based drought index using the ratio of potential and actual evaporation, is being used to detect drought response as a index of the droughts occurring rapidly over short periods of time. It is more accurate and provides faster analysis of drought conditions compared to the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), and the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI). In this study, we analyze drought events during 2015-2017 in North Korea using the ESI satellite-based drought index to determine drought response by comparing with it with the SPI and SPEI drought indices.

  • With the negative influences and damage from Asian dust increasing, it's getting important to investigate the climate and soil condition of the source region of Asian dust. There is a high possibility that the desertification and the drastic decrease of plants in China and Mongolia make worse the situation (bad effects of Asian Dust). To detect the movement of Asian dust caused by air circulation, we need to watch the state of the source region to get useful information for the prevention of the dust pollution, and to predict what part of China will become the source region. Therefore, using TOMS aerosol index data, NCEP reanalysis data that is Remote Sensing data from 1981 to 2000 (except 1993~1996, 4 years), for 16 years, examined the relation between the dust occurrence and weather elements. Dust occurrence appeared much in spring season from March to May in study areas. It had a dry climate during that season as follows : relative humidity about 20~40%, temperature about -5~5$^{\circ}C$, precipitation about 33-180 mm, wind speed about 4-10 ms-1. Dust occurrence and weather element annual change in study areas decreased gradually till 1990, but in Gobi desert the incidence of dust occurrence increased since 1997. As a result, found out that the more the precipitation, the less dust occurrence, because the precipitation and surface wind speed had a direct influence on the soil of the source region of dust.

  • The Mekong River Basin (MRB) is a crucial watershed in Asia, impacting over 60 million people across six developing nations. Accurate satellite-based precipitation products (SPPs) are essential for effective hydrological and watershed management in this region. However, the performance of SPPs has been varied and limited. The APHRODITE product, a unique gauge-based dataset for MRB, is widely used but is only available until 2015. In this study, we present a novel framework for correcting SPPs in the MRB by employing a deep learning approach that combines convolutional neural networks and encoder-decoder architecture to address pixel-by-pixel bias and enhance accuracy. The DLF was applied to four widely used SPPs (TRMM, CMORPH, CHIRPS, and PERSIANN-CDR) in MRB. For the original SPPs, the TRMM product outperformed the other SPPs. Results revealed that the DLF effectively bridged the spatial-temporal gap between the SPPs and the gauge-based dataset (APHRODITE). Among the four corrected products, ADJ-TRMM demonstrated the best performance, followed by ADJ-CDR, ADJ-CHIRPS, and ADJ-CMORPH. The DLF offered a robust and adaptable solution for bias correction in the MRB and beyond, capable of detecting intricate patterns and learning from data to make appropriate adjustments. With the discontinuation of the APHRODITE product, DLF represents a promising solution for generating a more current and reliable dataset for MRB research. This research showcased the potential of deep learning-based methods for improving the accuracy of SPPs, particularly in regions like the MRB, where gauge-based datasets are limited or discontinued.
