Multi-Spectral Camera(MSC) is a main payload on the KOMPSAT-2 satellite to perform the earth remote sensing. The MSC instrument has one(1) channel for panchromatic imaging and four(4) channel for multi-spectral imaging covering the spectral range from 450nm to 900nm using TDI CCD Focal Plane Array (FPA). The compression method on KOMPSAT-2 MSC was selected and used to match EOS input rate and PDTS output data rate on MSC image data chain. At once the MSC performance was carefully handled to minimize any degradation so that it was analyzed and restored in KGS(KOMPSAT Ground Station) during LEOP and Cal./Val.(Calibration and Validation) phase. In this paper, on-orbit image data chain in MSC and image data processing on KGS including general MSC description is briefly described. The influences on image performance between on-board compression algorithms and between performance restoration methods in ground station are analyzed and discussed.
This study is to test the applicability of QuickBird image for non-point source pollution assessment. SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model was adopted and the model was calibrated for a stream watershed of 255.4 $km^2$ Landsat land use data. For model application with QuickBird image, a precise agricultural land use map of 1.16 $km^2$ area located in the upstream watershed was produced by field investigation. The model was run with the combination of land use and soil map scales (1:5,000, 1:25,000 and 1:50,000). The results were compared and analyzed for the contribution of non-point source pollution by the land use scale and contents.
Stereo matching technique is used in many practical fields like satellite image analysis and computer vision. In this paper, we suggest a method to extract a target object image from a complicated background. For example, human face image can be extracted from random background. This method can be applied to computer vision such as security system, dressing simulation by use of extracted human face, 3D modeling, and security system. Many researches about stereo matching have been performed. Conventional approaches can be categorized into area-based and feature-based method. In this paper, we start from area-based method and apply area tracking using scanning window. Coarse depth information is used for area merging process using area searching data. Finally, we produce a target object image.
The cultural grounds of laver has been surveyed using SPOT-5 satellite images to calculate the facilities of laver cultivation area in the coastal waters of Korea 10m resolution multispectral images of SPOT-5 are adopted for the south area of Daebu Island, Hwaseong city to develop an automatic detection approach of laver nets that consists of the following: band difference technique, canny edge detector and morphological analysis. The satellite-based facilities number was relatively high as compared with the licensed number in 2005, 676,749 chaek and 572,745 chaek(柵, unit of measure for laver farm), respectively. The data could be applied to achieve a good harvest for laver seaweed growers and to control its national production keeping a stable market price for the government body.
Satellite remote sensing data have been valuable tool for volcanic ash monitoring. In this study, we present the results of application of satellite remote sensing data for monitoring of volcanic ash for three major volcanic eruption cases (2008 Chait$\acute{e}$n, 2010 Eyjafjallaj$\ddot{o}$kull, and 2011 Shinmoedake volcanoes). Volcanic ash detection products based on the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) observation data using infrared brightness temperature difference technique were compared to the forward air mass trajectory analysis by the HYbrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model. There was good correlation between MODIS volcanic ash image and trajectory lines after the volcanic eruptions, which support the feasibility of using the integration of satellite observed and model derived data for volcanic ash forecasting.

Since the solar energy resource is the main input for sizing any solar energy utilization system, it is essential to utilize the solar radiation data as an application and development of solar energy system increase. It will be necessary to understand and evaluate the insolation data. The Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has begun collecting horizontal global insolation data since May, 1982 at 16 different locations in Korea and for the more detailed analysis, images taken by geostationary satellite may be used to estimate solar irradiance fluxes at earth's surface. It is based on the empirical correlation between a satellite derived cloud index and the irradiance at the ground. From the results, the measured data has been collected at 16 different stations and estimated using satellite at 44 different stations over the Korean peninsula from 1982 to 2010. The Result of analysis shows that the annual-average daily global radiation on the horizontal surface is 3.66 $kWh/m^2/day$ and estimated solar radiation fluxes show reliable results for estimating the global radiation with average deviation of -7.2 to +3.7 % from the measured values.
In order to monitor nuclear activity in inaccessible areas, it is necessary to establish a methodology to analyze changesin nuclear activity-related objects using high-resolution satellite images. However, traditional object detection and change detection techniques using satellite images have difficulties in applying detection results to various fields because effects of seasons and weather at the time of image acquisition. Therefore, in this paper, an object of interest was detected in a satellite image using a deep learning model, and object changes in the satellite image were analyzed based on object detection results. An initial training of the deep learning model was performed using an open dataset for object detection, and additional training dataset for the region of interest were generated and applied to transfer learning. After detecting objects by multitemporal and multisensory satellite images, we tried to detect changes in objects in the images by using them. In the experiments, it was confirmed that the object detection results of various satellite images can be directly used for change detection for nuclear activity-related monitoring in inaccessible areas.

Recent severe climate changes and extreme weather events have caused the uncommon types of forest ecosystem disturbances such as hails and gypsy moths. This paper describes the analysis of the forest ecosystem disturbances using ISODATA (Iterative Self-organizing Data Analysis Technique Algorithm) with the RapidEye and Sentinel-2 images, regarding the cases of the hail damages in Hwasun in 2017 and the gypsy moth damages in the Chiak Mountain in 2020. In the case of hail damages, the comparison of the June image of this study and the July field survey of the previous study showed that the damage severity increased from June to July as the drought overlapped after the trees were injured by the hails. In the case of gypsy moths, significant leaf damages were found from the image of June, and the damages were mainly distributed at the low-altitude slope near Wonju City. We made sure that satellite remote sensing is a very effective method to detect various and unusual forest ecosystem disturbances caused by climate change. Also, it is expected that the Korean Medium Satellite for Agriculture and Forestry scheduled to launch in 2024 can be actively utilized to monitor such forest ecosystem disturbances.

The remote sensing technique was applied to enhance the water qualify model validation in a large water body. Since the satellite image usually covers the wide surface area of a large water body, it can compensate for the lark of measured data points required for model calibration and verification. This paper describes the analysis of Landsat FTM+images collected on April 29th and September 4th in year 2000 to evaluate surface water temperature of Lake Paldang. The water temperature data obtained from the satellite image were compared with model results by estimating three different methods of error criteria. The residual ratios on April 29th and September 4th were 0.13 and 0.04 respectively. This showed that the model result accords with the data obtained from the process of satellite image. Without considering atmospheric interference, however, transformation process of satellite image causes relatively large residual ratio in the surface water temperature distribution pattern on April 29th. In the future study, therefore, the atmospheric properties of image acquisition point needs to be considered for the application of radiance transformation model.
Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager (OSMI) is a payload on the Korean Multi-Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT) to perform global ocean color monitoring for the study of biological oceanography. HOMPSAT was launched 21 December 1999. The radiometric performance of OSMI is analyzed for various gain settings in the viewpoint of the instrument developer for OSMI calibration and application based on its ground performance data measured before launch. The radiometric response linearity and dynamic range are analyzed and the dynamic range is compared with the nominal input radiance for the ocean and the land. The noise equivalent radiance (NER) corresponding to the instrument radiometric noise is compared with the radiometric resolution of signal digitization (1-count equivalent radiance). The best gain setting of OSMI for ocean monitoring is recommended. This analysis is considered to be useful for the OSMI mission and operation planning, the OSMI image data calibration, and users' understanding about OSMI image quality.
