To analysis on the degradation of the satellite communication signal due to Asian dust that appeared on Korean peninsula during March and April 2004, EIRPs of L, S, C, Ku and Ka frequency bands of the downlink of satellite communication link were measured by Satellite Signal Monitoring Center located in Icheon, Korea. The measured EIRP values were compared to the total dust density and dust particle distribution that were measured using PM 10 and OPC by the Korea Meteorological Administration, and the possible correlation between three sets data were analyzed.

Wireless communication systems using airship have been proposed in worldwide. The airship will be located at the stratosphere about $20{\sim}23\;km$ above the sea level. The position of airship will vary within the station keeping range with time due to the drag of the wind in the stratosphere. When the earth station antenna has a high gain without the tracking function, the antenna performance may be degraded by a small variation of the airship. This means that variation of airship location could result in serious degradation of the system performance. In this paper, degradation in earth station's Equivalent Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) and Gain to noise Temperature ratio (G/T) due to the stratospheric platform movements has been derived by calculating the deviation angle of the main beam directions between the earth station and the platform antenna. In this case, the antenna of the earth station has been assumed circular and/or patch array antennas.
COMS will receive two different meteorological signals in S-Band from IDACS (Image Data Acquisition and Control System) in ground station before transmitting them in L-Band to user station. MODCS (Meteorological Ocean Data Communication Subsystem) in satellite released the value of required PFD (Power Flux Density) to receive two signals. Thus, DATS (Data Acquisition and Transmission Subsystem) needs to send two signals to satellite with a satisfied EIRP. The value of minimum HPA (High Power Amplifier) output power was estimated by subtracting antenna directional gain and path loss between antenna and HPA from the needed EIRP in this paper. Besides the minimum output power of HPA, the maximum output power was also calculated with considering IMD (Inter-Modulation Distortion) characteristics. IMD is always occurred in the output of HPA when LRIT and HRIT are amplified by using single HPA as COMS application. In this paper, the setting of maximum output power was determined when the IMD of modelled HPA was corresponded to the requirement of MODCS.

ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) recommends the introduction of SBAS (Satellite Based Augmentation System) in 2025, which provides GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) correction data and the ranging signal via GEO (geostationary earth orbit) satellites to GNSS users. In this paper, we present the basic design results of the satellite communication system RF link for the Korean SBAS systems, KASS (Korea Augmentation Satellite System) which is going on the development & implementation. KASS RF link was designed in consideration of both the C-band and Ku-band uplinks to meet the international standard requirements for the SBAS system, and identified the minimum EIRP and G/T performance of the KASS uplink station for each frequency band. These analysis results for the RF link design are expected to be used for an effective design of the subsystem specifications for KASS satellite communication system.

For Ka-band satellite communication system, a new flexible payload technologies which can compensate rain attenuation have to be developed. The Ka-band satellite output power control technology enables to adjust downlink output power of satellite payload in Ka-band (19.8 ~ 22.2 GHz). In this paper, we introduce multi-beam antenna with multi-port amplifiers for Ka-band flexible output power allocation system. We have designed multi-beam antenna with array-fed reflector to form 8 beams on the Korean Peninsula. The target EIRP per beam is more than 59 dBW. The system is designed to present 6 dB boost beams for rainfall areas. Individual beams were optimized by the excited amplitude and phase of feed elements of the feed cluster. The multi-port amplifier(MPA) is one of effective approaches for flexible power allocation in combination with multi-beam antenna. In case of using MPA in multi-beam system, the inter-port isolation characteristic of MPA is important parameter to avoid interference among the output ports. In this paper, we propose a new MPA structure that consists of two $4{\times}4$ Buttler matrixes and phase/amplitude controllable power amplifier modules.
This paper presents the impact of Japanese radio source on the S-Band communication between KOMPSAT-2 satellite and TT&C ground system. Major specifications such as transmitting EIRP (Effective Isotropic Radiated Power) and location of Japanese terrestrial station were informed from Radio Research Laboratory in Korea Communication Commission. To estimate path loss in S-Band, the distance between Japanese station and TT&C ground system was obtained by using COTS (Commercial Off-The-Shelf) software. After that the signal strength of Japanese radio source placed at the TT&C ground system was calculated from link parameters such as transmitting EIRP, path loss, and receiving antenna gain. Consequently, this paper shows that the degradation caused by Japanese radio source is acceptable to TT&C ground system for satellite operation.
DS/CDM-QPSK (ITU-R Recommendation BO.1130-4 Annex 6, 'Digital System E'), which has been adoptedas a standard of Korean Satellite DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) system, is a satellite-based multimedia broadcasting service which transmits the multi-channel and high quality contents to the terrestrial users through a satellite or gap-fillers. The broadcast from a satellite is directly received in the plain terrain which are within line-of-sight, but in cities where the broadcast cannot be received directly due to the shadow of buildings, an attempt is being made to install 'Gap-Fillers' to improve the reception in those areas. The gap-fillers, however, may induce interference to service of adjacent band, when their output power is substantially higher compared to the received signal power of signal from a satellite of the adjacent service. In this paper, a link budget analysis is performed, and the optimal EIRP of a gap-filler to maximize the gap-filler coverage, while preventing adjacent band interference is derived.

This paper describes the study on the electrical design of a multi-beam large antenna for a satellite payload. This satellite antenna provides the universal communication and broadcasting services to personal portable terminals over the Korean Peninsula. The structure of the hybrid antenna fed by a feed array is proper to provide multi-beams. The amplitude and phase of each feed element should be optimized for a required beam and they can be obtained by GO (Geometrical Optics) and PO(Physical Optics) method. The number of feed elements are also optimized to meet the specification of EIRP(Effective Isotropically Radiated Power). The optimally designed antenna with the limited reflector size and minimum number of feed elements is shown in this paper.

The classical PCM/PSK/PM scheme has been commonly used for TC & R applications between satellites and ground stations in the S-band. We analyzed TC & R link performance between ground station and the geostationary satellite which employs PCM/PSK/PM, when the satellite are particularly on the Super Synchronous Transfer Orbit(SSTO). The satellite parameters on SSTO are assumed to be those operating on the geostationary orbit, considering heritage aspect. In the uplink, the results shown indicate that sufficient margins over 3 dB are obtained when the EIRP of ground station is greater than 65 dBW. The down link performance is of great interest. By adjusting the telemetry modulation index and ranging modulation index, we could obtain the required margin of 3.0 dB in the down link, and find out the minimum G/T of ground station. In conclusion, the previously operated ground stations during LEOP at COMS launch, can be operational when GEO injection is made using SSTO(65,000 km and 70,000 km).

The study discussed the link analysis for the Ka band satellite broadcasting service in Korea with respect to the transmission schemes based on the DVB-S2 standard. To analyze the effect of the rain fading to the link budget, we estimated the rain attenuation from the measured rainfall intensity in Korea. We analyzed the link budget for the Ka band transponders of Koreasat-3, and DirecTV BSS-99W, and showed the possible link availability with the DVB-S2 transmission schemes for each transponder. Based on the link analysis of the available satellites with the Ka band transponders, we suggested the required EIRP for the satellite which will be employed for the Ka band satellite broadcasting service in Korea.
