  • The aim of this thesis is to examine the effect of the diuretics in the Sasang constitutional medicine those are not categorized to the diuretic in the established herbal medicine by the way of measuring the change of body edema and the quantity of body moisture through the inbody test, along with the urine volume taken for 24 hours 1. We medicated the diuretic suggested by the DongyiSuseBowon東醫壽世保元 into the tested group and measured the change of the urine volume, the quantity of body moisture and the degree of body edema. The results are the followings below. 1) Soeumin The change in the urine volume and body moisture showed no responsibility, but the degree of body edema decreased with the responsibility. 2) Soyangin All of the degree of body edema and the urine volume, and body moisture showed decrease. 3) Taeumin The urine volume and body moisture increased but showed no responsibility. Also the degree of body edema decreased within the normal limit which can not be accepted. 4) The medicine of the Sasang Constitutional Medicine can not be simply thought to be the diuretic, but it has the function that excretes the moisture which functions negatively in the body and causes edema, as well as the function of the adjustment of metabolism that preserves the normal amount of moisture. This is the good example which is the concept of the adjustment therapy suggested by The Sasang Constitutional Medicine 2. Through the results above, we can find that the diuretic suggested by The Sasang Constitutional Medicine functions in the way that is differently explained by the herbal medicine.

Methods The medical records of 1354 subjects who have received prescriptions and diagnosis of Sasang constitution from January 2008 to December 2009 at a hospital of Oriental medicine were reviewed. General factors and the frequency of the prescriptions according to Sasang constitution were compared and analyzed. 3. Results 1) Among the 1354 subjects, 562(41.5%) persons were males and 792(58.5%) females. 614(45.3%) persons were Soeumin, 369(27.3%) Soyangin, 364(26.9%) Taeumin, and 7(0.5%) Taeyangin. 2) The frequencies of the prescriptions of 14 constitutional disease syndromes were compared. Taeum Syndrome, Esophagus Cold Syndrome and Yin Deficiency Tidal fever Syndrome show the high frequencies among 14 disease syndromes. Chest Heat Syndrome, Deficiency of Yin and Blood syndrome and Soeum Syndrome show the low frequencies among 14 disease syndromes. Interior disease(63.4%) was higher than exterior disease(36.6%) and mild disease(61.8%) was higher than severe disease(38.2%). 3) Among all constitutional prescriptions, Jowyiseungchung-tang was the most common and next rankings were Gupoong-tang and Dokhwaljihwang-tang in turns. 4. • Objectives Two conflicting readings of "Donguisusebowon" so far have been presented that Sasang Constitutional Medicine inherited the traditional Five Elements theory and that it was a new perspective on its own right. The main purpose of this paper is to review the theoretical ground of Sasang Constitutional Medicine to see whether it has inherited the Traditional Korean Medicine, and show that it had been developed as an original view independent of the Five Elements theory. Methods To do this, I inquired into the theoretical background of Sasang Constitutional Medicine as well as its philosophical premises and its leading ideas. Results and Conclusions As a result, I have found that Sasang Constitutional Medicine is an original medical theory developed in empirical terms on its own right, divorced from the transcendental view of the Five Elements theory, while borrowing some concepts from I-Ching and Neo-Confucianism only for technical tools. In short, Sasang Constitutional Medicine may well be put as calling for a reappraisal of the Han-medical and Confucian accounts of human being, and a transition from speculative method based on the Five Elements theory to a verifiable empirical method. In this vein, my reading of Sasang Constitutional Medicine in empirical perspective may well be appraised as presenting a new way to further inquiries into the theoretical nature of it, and to getting itself across with Western medicine as well.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to review the current Sasang constitutional research on obesity and to provide basic data for further development in the direction of better research. Methods Clinical research articles on obesity of the Sasang Constitutional Medicine were extracted from five database. Published year, published journals, and subjects of studies were classified. Clinical methods for the classification of Sasang type and diagnostic criteria for obesity were summarized. Results A total of 36 selected research articles were published from 1998 to 2020. And 20 articles(55.6%) have been published in Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine and Journal of Oriental Rehabilitation Medicine. Most of the clinical study subjects were studies that identified independent factors that were correlated with obesity by Sasang constitution type. But these studies have not sufficiently reflected the distinctive characteristics of Sasang Constitution Medicine. Discussion Through this study, it was confirmed to the necessity of developing new research designs for obesity by Sasang constitution and researching on obesity treatment through improvement of symptoms by using the already developed questionnaires that have proven reliability and validity, away from the research biased towards Taeeumin and Taeeumin's prescription. If additional research based on this study is accompanied, it is expected that it can be utilized in typed obesity treatment fields.
