  • The Sasang constitution typology was analyzed through SCAT2 and a specialist to examine the correlation between the Sasang constitution and dietary pattern, and the difference in BMI and food preference according to Sasang constitution was determined. The Sasang constitution typology of the subjects was classified by SCAT2 and a specialist. Seventy-four subjects were screened by SCAT2 (SC), and 18 of them were judged by the specialist (SP). The results of SCAT2 and the specialist were consistent in 13 subjects (SS). BMI and food preference among these groups were compared. The concordance rate of SCAT2 and the specialist classification was 72.2%. The BMI in SC was significantly lower in the order of Taeeumin, Soyangin, and Soeumin, but no significant difference was observed between Taeeumin and Soyangin in SP and SS. To analyze the preference of food and the constitutional suitability, the 'Yin-Yang food preference index' was developed and compared with the data classified by constitutional food according to existing ideological medical theory. As a result, there were 33 food items that matched in the SP-SS, which was more than that in the SC-SP (4 items), SC-SS (6 items), and SC-SP-SS (4 items). Twenty-four of the 33 matched food items were consistent with the existing constitutional food data. In conclusion, SCAT2 is a very useful tool for Sasang constitutional research, but for more objective research, it is recommended that subjects who show consistent results by different methods be targeted.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to validate the Sasang Personality Questionnaire (SPQ), based on the diagnosis of Sasang constitutional medicine clinical specialist. Methods : We performed Sasang type differentiation of 103 college students by certified specialist, and analyzed biopsychological traits of each groups with SPQ, Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), Positive and Negative Affection Schedule (PANAS) and Body Mass Index (BMI). Results : The SPQ score of So-Yang ($33.1{\pm}0.79$), Tae-Eum ($29.03{\pm}0.67$) and So-Eum ($25.76{\pm}0.98$) Sasang groups showed significant differences from each other. The SPQ showed significant correlation with TCI Novelty-Seeking (r=.346), TCI Harm-Avoidance (r=-.348) and TCI Persistence (r=.346). But the BMI and PANAS did not show significant correlation with SPQ, although the PANAS Positive Affection (r=.332) has significant correlation with SPQ-Behavior. Conclusions : We confirmed the clinical validity of SPQ with clinical specialist and established biopsychosocial instruments. This study would contribute to a more objective diagnosis and studies on biopsychosocial mechanism of Sasang constitutional medicine.

  • 1. Objectives Scarcely referred except for a few phrases of the acupuncture of Dongmugong. He stated every disease could be cured through acupunture. In addition, generally there are a certain point('hyul-穴') of the body that suits according to the constitutions, and just as there are a theory that 'ascend-descend-loosen-tighten(升降緩束)' so as therapy of the symptom has the same. However, he did not indicate the concrete method of the four constitutional acupuncture. He only asked his descendants to study about it. 2. Methods Therefore, author of the thesis tries to describe the theory approach to the seletive method of four constitutional acupunture point based on ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Suse Bowon(東醫壽世保元)${\lrcorner}$ 3. Results and Conclusions The author of the thesis recommended the methods to apply twelve channels to sasangin's disease and symptoms according to the ascend(升)-descend(降)-loosen(緩)-tighten(束)

  • This study started from the curiasty that Sasang Constitution spirit of Lee ]e-ma has something to do with MBTI based on classification of character of C.G. Jung. This reports made from the information of 368 people who got the Sasang Constitution therapy and showed the good result in health in my hospital and they take part in self-report from of MBTI which are made as statistics and research in relationship between Sasang Constitution spitrit of Lee ]e-ma and classification of character of C.G. Jung This is the statistical result of the research. There is not exactly statistical result which support Sasang Constitution spirit of Lee Je-ma relate to the classification of character of C.G. Jung. The identification of statement of Sasang Constitution spirit with partispart is average 41 which is low while the identification of classification of character with partispart is average 76 which is high. In this reseult, It is hard to get general agreement that the statement of Sasang Constitution of spirit relate to the classification of character because of the difference of identification. so more studies are needed in this part.

  • Objectives: Sasang Constitutional Medicine(SCM) is a Traditional Korean Medicine based on the natural human emotions of joy(喜), anger(怒), sorrow(哀), and pleasure(樂). Therefore, in this paper I would like to construct SCM as a Mind-Body Medicine by studying the relation between SCM and psychotherapy focusing on control of emotions. Methods : I have researched the psychological characteristics of the four human physical constitutions, as described by SCM, and psychotherapy with an emphasis on the natural human emotions of joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure as discussed in the works of Lee Je-ma(李濟馬, 1837-1900). Results and Conclusions : The joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure in SCM do not simply refer to human emotions. They have an inherent nature(性), emotion(情) and Qi(氣). They are tied to the psychological characteristics of the four human physical constitutions and the relationship between body and mind. The turning point in the transformation from Sasang philosophy to Sasang therapy lies in these emotions. Sasang Constitutional Medicine, which focuses on 'mind matter' and diagnosing illness, emphasizes medicine and food(藥餌), along with health maintenance(調養). In particular, health maintenance requires the following mental practices. First of all, through countinuous awarness(恒戒) and self-reflection(自反), one needs to practice moderation(中) and restraint(節) of the emotions of joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure. Therefore, 'inward reflection while sitting(坐思)' is necessary. In SCM, this is very similar to meditation in that it enhances psychological self-control through mental training or practice.

  • Objective : This study was conducted to compare Sasang Constitutional Medicine (SCM) and Four Humor Theory (FHT). Method : 1. The theoretical comparison was focused on the central pillars of both theories, i.e., the theories of Hippocrates and his successor Galenos as well as Lee Je-ma. 2. Research papers on SCM and FHT were collected as follows. First, relevant papers were searched for using several electronic databases: Pubmed (http://www.pubmed.org.), NDSL (http://www.ndsl.kr/index.do), KISS (http://kiss.ksstudy.com), and RISS (http://www.riss4u.net.). Keywords were 'Sasang', 'constitution', 'constitutional medicine', 'humor theory', 'Hippokrates', 'Galenos', and "Dongeuisusebowon".In addition, relevant papers were searched for using the websites of The Korean Society for the History of Medicine(http://medhist.kams.or.kr), The Korean society of Oriental medical classics (http://www.wonjeon.or.kr), The Society of Sasang Constitutional Medicine (http://www.esasang.or.kr/new_home/main.htm),and The Korean Association of Oriental Medical Physiology (http://www.ksomp.or.kr). As a result, a total of 32 papers were included in the final selection. Result & Conclusion : In this study, a comparison was made between FHT and SCM in terms of physiology, pathology and therapy. We showedthat the theories share similarities as well as differences. However, in a practical sense, the two should be characterized based on their differences rather than their similarities. In conclusion, the two have something in common, but overall, they are remarkably different from each other.

  • Objective : This study is purposed to report 2 cases of cancer patient whose symptoms related to radiation pneumonitis had been controlled with Saengmaek-san treatment. Methods : A 56-year-old female rectal cancer patient was prescribed with Saengmaek-san due to the symptoms which had developed 4 weeks after the completion of her radiotherapy session in both lungs. Her chief complaints were shortness of breath, dry cough and fatigue. Another case, 53-year-old male patient with hepatocellular carcinoma, had also developed symptoms of fatigue, weight loss and dry cough after his radiotherapy session in left upper lung zone. Radiological changes of both patients' chest X-ray suggested radiation pneumonitis. Results : Symptoms of the female patient were improved, especially shortness of breath, after Saengmaek-san treatment, without any aggravation in her chest X-ray result. However, infiltrative opacity in the left upper lung zone of the male patient was aggravated despite the improvement of his clinical symptoms. His remaining symptoms and radiological change were effectively controlled after steroid therapy. Conclusion : Seangmaek-san may be considered as a potential treatment for symptoms related to radiation pneumonitis with proper monitoring.
